Almost art deco in appearance, this bronze Buddhist temple flower vase was used on the altar in a Buddhist temple. Wonderful Meiji Period c.1880 bronze, the vase has two hand-like decoration attachments off to the sides. On the vase itself are bamboo plants in relief against a lightning bolt diaper design. Bamboos were a symbol of flexibility and emptiness. The lightning bolt diaper is a well used Buddhist motif. Great condition. c.1880. (7" x 6") (18cm x 15cm). This 'wagumi' Japanese style basketry is the epitome of the new free wheeling style that emerged at the end of the Meiji Period c.1868-1912. Using aged susdake bamboo taken from old farmhouse ceilings, this unsigned basket maker has created a texured weave with a beautiful aesthetic sense. A magnificent piece. Inscripted on the rim of this antique Japanese Zen Buddhist bronze bell is the name of the temple, Kaishoji, a zen buddhist temple in Azuchi, where Oda Nobunaga created one of Japan's foremost castle towns. Also the date of the bell is Meiji 38 October (1906). The names of the donors, all women, are also inscripted on the rim. The sound is reverberating and unending.
