A lamp such as this might have lit homes during the life of Christ. A metaphor of joy and prosperity, for hope, for life itself, lamps have illuminated the path of More »
A lamp such as this might have lit homes during the life of Christ. A metaphor of joy and prosperity, for hope, for life itself, lamps have illuminated the path of civilization for centuries. They have guided great thoughts through the night, stood vigil with lonely passions. In the presence of this simple object, we are in touch directly with a vanished world, with the people once warmed by its glow. Today it remains as an enduring symbol of man's desire to conquer the darkness. - (L.1949)

In Judea centuries ago, during the reign of the Herods, some person unknown to us but very real was warmed by the glow from this simple lamp. In its presence, the barrier of time dissolves and we are in direct touch with that ancient evening. An enduring token of man's desire to bring light to the darkness. - (P.2537)

Perhaps no time and place has had greater influence on human history than Judea in the period between the rise of the Herodian dynasty and the destruction of the second temple. This era was witness to the birth of the Christian faith, and to the dream of Jewish independence--both of which have survived through the centuries. These two simple objects, a lamp and a coin, were in everyday use during that exciting age. The coin reminds us of mankind's determination to live free from all oppression; the lamp is a symbol of hope against the darkness. Together, they provide an inspiring testament to the ongoing strength of the human spirit. - (PF.1200)

For centuries, lamps have illuminated the path of civilization: they have guided great thoughts through the night, and stood vigil with lonely passions. A metaphor for joy and prosperity, for hope, for life itself, the lamp is one of the most enduring and useful of human inventions. This simple coin, minted in a time of struggle, is nonetheless adorned with images of peace and hope. It remains as a proud token of man's desire to live free. Like the lamp, it is symbolic of an ancient dream, a faith in mankind that has survived and prospered through the centuries. - (PF.1285) « Less
