Antique Aubusson, France, late nineteenth centuryThis supremely elegant antique Aubusson carpet has a grand architectural frame replete with moldings and lush, neo-classical embellishment. The field, roughly oval, appears window-like with a coloration so soft that one can barely discern the ring of vinescrolls and the floral bouquet at the center. The outer border with its straight garland and ‘bead and reel’ moldings is somewhat darker, imparting a certain gravity to this otherwise airy composition. Antique Kurdish Long Carpet, Persia, late nineteenth century Elegant scalloped ogival medallions repeat in staggered allover symmetry down the length of this supremely refined antique Kurdish long carpet. Life-like clusters of flowers, exceptional in their realism fill the ivory-ground medallions. The deep navy blue ground of the field functions essentially as graphic outline or reinforcement for the scalloped and delicately serrated contours of the medallions. The narrow vinescroll border set on a rich terracotta ground provides the perfect framing contrast to the scale and palette of the field. Antique Farahan, Persia, late nineteenth centuryAlthough the weave and the border indicate that this lovely carpet is an antique Persian Farahan, the design of the field is western, recalling the great Savonnerie carpets of baroque and rococo France. An allover network of acanthus scrolls or cartouches comprises the basis of the field design, with clusters of naturalistic roses within the cartouches. The use of deep and soft shades of blue helps to define the main outlines of field design. In the border with its lovely ‘turtle’ vinescroll, we return to the classic Farahan repertory, and its is indeed striking that it fits so well with the western air of the field. Breathtaking Gallery Size Antique Isfahan Persian Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 17th century - A grand floral composition graces the field of this masterpiece of Classical Persian weaving.  Flowering vines and palmettes undulate outward to the sides up the length of the field in harmonious bilateral symmetry. Time has turned the magenta ground a deep rose lavender, but it still provides a lovely setting for the soft green and golden tones used to render the vines and the animals that frolic amidst them. The border is quite extraordinary, consisting as it does of cartouches made up of floral bouquets. The dominant green of these cartouches contrasts nicely with the lavender and tan viney mesh that comprises the background of the border. The minor borders of stepped half-rosettes look almost lace like in their delicate precision.  Classical Persian carpets are often standard in their design, however impressive they may be. Antique Kerman, Persia, circa 1900A scalloped diamond medallion sits amidst a field strewn with floating palmettes, vines, and floral sprays on this wonderful antique Kerman. The medallion has a deep green ground echoed only by two pendant finials at either end within an otherwise pale golden field. The main border is the palest shade of green barely distinguishable for the field. Here again its framing function relies on the inner minor border and an outer edge zone which pick up the ground color of the medallion.
