A very fine and early Ridgway porcelain trophy form vase with reticulated neck and lobbed rim, sitting on a black porcelain square base, accented with swan's neck handles, More »
A very fine and early Ridgway porcelain trophy form vase with reticulated neck and lobbed rim, sitting on a black porcelain square base, accented with swan's neck handles, Decorated with wild berries and flowers strewn about the upper shoulders of the vase. In excellent condition, I can not find any signs of restoration or repairs. If there are any, they have been expertly done! This beautiful vase measures 11" X 6.50" and dates Circa 1835 to 1840. The floral decoration possibly by Joseph Bancroft. In 1808 the brothers John and William Ridgway jointed their father Job's factory at Cauldon Place, Hanley in Staffordshire and in the same year the production of bone china was added to that of earthenwares. The early Ridgway porcelains were in Spode style, with quality, scenic bat-prints and some colourful designs in "London"- shape tea-wares. In 1830 the two brothers separated. William Ridgway concentrated on the production of earthenwares. John continued the Cauldon Place Works and was later appointed Potter of Queen Victoria, making some magnificently decorated porcelains. Around 1833 five hundred people were employed at the pottery, and many talented artists were engaged in production of fine painted pieces, some of which are believed to be the work of George Speight and Daniel Lucas, known for their landscape and figure painting. Thomas Brentnall, George Hancock, and Joseph Bancroft have also been employed, specializing in flower painting. John Ridgway exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and their catalogue shows the great variety and quality of the porcelain produced by the factory at this time. In 1856 John Ridgway & Co. gave way to Ridgway, Bates & Co., to be followed on John's retirement in 1858 by Bates, Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co and than from December 1861 by Brown-Westhead, More & Co., a firm that continued until 1904. $1,750. + shipping. « Less

A very fine and quite rare pair of English Chamberlain's Worcester porcelain spill vases, decorated in the popular "Japan" pattern 240... also know as The Lord Nelson pattern More »
A very fine and quite rare pair of English Chamberlain's Worcester porcelain spill vases, decorated in the popular "Japan" pattern 240... also know as The Lord Nelson pattern or The Green Partridge pattern. Decorated in vivid shades of cobalt blue and iron red and a small green partridge, hidden among the leaves and fans of the design, accented with brilliant gilding. A spill vase was usually kept on the mantelpiece and was filled with rolled paper tapers or very thin wood sticks, called spill. Spill was used to transfer fire from the fireplace to candles, lamps, a pipe or a cigar. Commercial matches, which first surfaced in England during the 1820s were a relatively expensive commodity until the late 19th century, and spill was therefore a more cost effective solution. These attractive vases are in splendid condition. They measure 4.50" X 2.50" $2,250 for the pair, + shipping. « Less
