Three piece antique Japanese early Meiji Period c.1885 bronze flower vase used for the tea ceremony and ikebana flower arrangements. The bottom stand is on three gourd legs with raised swirling waves. The body has raised geese flying amongst pines. Geese with pines connotates 'kanraigetsu' the eigth lunar month in the old calendar - the month of the geese's return. Folk beliefs associate geese with wedded bliss. From the late Edo c.1865 this is the best antique Japanese 'tsuno' face washing basin Kodo Arts has ever seen. Used in Kyoto by a Gion District geisha, the thickly black lacquered wood basin has maki-e gold swirling rivers and flowers on its banks throughout. In the original box from the turn of the century, c.1900, this elegant antique Japanese black lacquered sweets box has the Myriad Treasures associated with seven gods of good luck in raised gold maki-e on the lid. Among the treasures which are said to ensure prosperity, long life and general good fortune are: coral, rhinoceros horns, the hat and raincoat of invisibility, the purse of inexhaustible riches, the wish granting gem, scrolls and fans etc. On the box is written 'fukurokuju maki-e' the style of raised gold maki-e lacquering and 'shihogata ohira' the style of square sweets box. Meiji Period c.1890 thick red bronze with especially spectacular bronze work on the corners. Legs are knarled roots and intertwined knot motif decorates all four corners in raised relief.
