Sir Thomas Lawrence RA “Innocent” Colored Mezzotint Sir Thomas Lawrence RA (April 13, 1769 — January 7, 1830) was a notable English painter, mostly of portraits. He was born in Bristol. His father was an innkeeper, first at Bristol and afterwards at Devizes, and at the age of six Lawrence was already being shown off to the guests of the Bear as an infant prodigy who could sketch their likenesses and declaim speeches from Milton. In 1779 the elder Lawrence had to leave Devizes, having failed in business and Thomas’s precocious talent began to be the main source of the family’s income; he had gained a reputation along the Bath road. His debut as a crayon portrait painter was made at Oxford, where he was well patronized, and in 1782 the family settled in Bath, where the young artist soon found himself fully employed in taking crayon likenesses of fashionable people at a guinea or a guinea and a half a head. In 1784 he gained the prize and silver-gilt palette of the Society of Arts for a crayon drawing after Raphael’s "Transfiguration," and presently beginning to paint in oil. Sir Thomas Lawrence R. A. (Royal Academy ) “Innocence” first painted in the 19th century and later engraved by Georges P. James. Published in a rare and limited edition of Color Mezzotint Engraving in London, 1920. This treasure measures 11 by 14 inches approximate and in good condition. Little discoloration on verso with a light spot of foxing and outer edge of the mezzo tinted image and a light crease in the engraved area, not visible on the front side of the art work. Pencil signed by the engraver. Georges P. James was among a handful of mezzotint engravers of the earlier 20 Century mezzotint engravers and was considered among one of the best of the period.   « Less

Louis Icart, French (1880 - 1950) Signed by Louis Icart Number 82 Louis Icart was born in Toulouse, France. He began drawing at an early age. He was particularly interested in fashion, and became famous for his sketches almost immediately. He worked for major design studios at a time when fashion was undergoing a radical change-from the fussiness of the late nineteenth century to the simple, clingy lines of the early twentieth century. He was first son of Jean and Elisabeth Icart and was officially named Louis Justin Laurent Icart. The use of his initials L.I. would be sufficient in this household. Therefore, from the moment of his birth he was dubbed 'Helli'. The Icart family lived modestly in a small brick home on rue Traversière-de-la-balance, in the culturally rich Southern French city of Toulouse, which was the home of many prominent writers and artists, the most famous being Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.   « Less

Hubert von Herkomer Large Selfportrait 15 x 20 inches with extremely important association/provenance Dated 1909., 1909. Book Condition: Very Good. Format (image area): 270 x 250 mm. Sheet Size: 500 x 375 mm. * Hubert von Herkomer a British-German painter, graphic artist and writer. He grew up in Southampton, he worked as a freelance graphic artist and illustrator. In the 1870s years he achieved the breakthrough into an internationally recognized painter. Herkomer opened 1883 in Bushey a school of painting, which he headed until 1904th In Landsberg, where his parents were, he built a 30-meter high tower, which is now part of the local Herkomer museum. - Here a quite rare self-portrait, a dedication copy here with personal sign in pencil and dedication "to my friend Hanfstaengl, August 1909". Works in important Museums around the world Tate, Ashmolean, national Museums of Liverpool, Harvard University, National Portrait Gallery London Etc etc etc... Hanfstaengl made for Herkomer different photo engravings; what makes this assignment in pencil is so important ... the council of the royal academy Hanfstaengl was in 1908 but a work of Herkomer; was surely can be considered one of Herkomer's masterpieces. Famed photographer Franz Hanfstaengl started an art gallery, which was taken over by Edgar son and grandson Edgar Jr. This famous self-portrait has an assignment for one of them ... Edgar Snr died round the same year that this portrait was dedicated in 1909 Herkomer onwikkelde a type of engraving which Herkomer Engraving was called ... This a mighty work signed twice by Herkomer with pencil dedication ... As you know, Vincent Van Gogh when he recited in England was a big fan of Herkomer. I myself would like to say that van Gogh's early realistic works were mainly influenced by Herkomer.   « Less
