The Seljuqs, a Turkic dynasty of Central Asian nomadic origins, became the new rulers of the eastern Islamic lands following their defeat of the powerful Ghaznavids at the Battle of Dandanakan (1040). By 1055, the Seljuqs had reached and taken over Baghdad, which put an end to Buyid rule, and established themselves as the new protectors of the Abbasid caliphate and Sunni Islam. Within fifty years, the Seljuqs created a vast though relatively short-lived empire, encompassing all of Iran, Iraq, and much of Anatolia. By the close of the eleventh century, as the Seljuq realm became troubled due to internal conflicts and the division of the realm among heirs, the empire dissolved into separate territories governed by different branches of the dynasty. The main branch of the Seljuq house, the so-called Great Seljuqs, maintained control over Iran. Under the Seljuq sultanate, Iran enjoyed a period of material and cultural prosperity, and the ingenuity in architecture and the arts during this period had a notable impact on later artistic developments.

This is a gorgeous signed bronze oil lamp, by Ernest Rancoulet, from around 1900. He was well known in France, presenting in several salon shows in and around Paris in the late 1800's to early 1900's. He was particularly well known for his Art Nouveau figural works, with detailed attention to facial features and expressions. This is one of those beauties.
"La Jeunesse", French for the youth, is 21" from the marble base to the top of her up stretched arm. In her hand is the original green etched glass and brass oil lamp with original wick. The clear glass flume is new. Upon close examination, you can see there are no cracks, welds, or crazing, rare in an item both old and fragile. The overall height, including lamp and flume is 35".

FITCHBURG RR LANTERN
This is a 19th century (probably 3rd quarter) RR Lantern for the Fitchburg, Massachusetts line that was in operation from the 1840’s to 1900 when it became part of the Boston and Maine.
It was made by C.T.HAM and has a glass font as seen in our pictures. The heavy glass globe is embossed in relief FRR. The globe has a chip on the base but, cannot be seen when in the lamp and because it’s so thick it will not get any worse. We believe the chip has been there for many decades. The wick turns freely and is in overall good condition. The dome top is brass. The overall height is 12â€
THIS IS A GREAT PIECE OF RR HISTORY AND IS QUITE RARE.

Exceptional Pair of Antique Aladdin Wedgwood Oil Lamps, mounted on black wooden bases, the shades are hand painted on parchment and the lamps are newly rewired. H:24" More »
Exceptional Pair of Antique Aladdin Wedgwood Oil Lamps, mounted on black wooden bases, the shades are hand painted on parchment and the lamps are newly rewired. H:24" Diameter of shade: 14.5" Historically speaking Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795) was the 12th child of potter Thomas Wedgwood, and his grandfather and great-grandfather had been potters, too. In his early 20's Joseph formed a partnership with the preeminent English potter of the day, Thomas Whieldon. Under Whieldon's eye, Wedgwood practiced with glazing, bodies, shapes, and colours. In 1759 his dreams came true when two relatives leased him the Ivy House in Burslem to allow him to start his own pottery business. One of the greatest boosts to the business in those early years was an advantageous marriage to a distant cousin, Sarah Wedgwood, who brought a large dowry into the marriage. The course of Josiah life changed and in 1766 he bought Etruria, in Staffordshire, as a base for his factory and a magnificent new house. Wedgwood was a constant innovator, a thinker, and a scientist. In 1782 he perfected a tool for measuring heat in kilns. On the basis of his work Wedgwood was elected to the Royal Society in 1783. Prior to that his innovation of Wedgwood introduced into the pottery field was the development of Queen's Ware, a cream-coloured, lead-glazed earthenware. This was durable china formed with a mixture of flint and white clay. In 1765 Wedgwood provided a tea service in this new material for Queen Charlotte, wife of George III. She was so pleased with it that she gave Wedgwood permission to call it Queen's Ware, and to style himself, "Potter to Her Majesty". Queen's Ware became an enormous success spread the name of Wedgwood across all of Europe. As we show here in pristine condition the pair of Urns are well detailed and unique in style. In 1768 Wedgwood developed a fine black porcelain called Black Basalt. With this fine-grained stoneware he was able to produce copies of the newly excavated Etruscan pottery from Italy. The new innovation proved another huge commercial success. The surface was lustrous and smooth, with a purple-black sheen. Wedgwood's factory could scarcely keep up with the demand for candlesticks, medallions, tableware, and vases in the material. The third major innovation for which Wedgwood is remembered was Jasper Ware, which has been described as the most important invention in the history of ceramics since the discovery of porcelain. It took Wedgwood years of experimentation to perfect his design for this unglazed stoneware with the uncanny ability to be both durable and delicate, and to take colours so evenly throughout its surface. Jasper can be almost any colour, although the most famous examples are are pale or dark blue and white. Jasper Ware has been in production for over 200 years, and in that time the methods of production have changed hardly at all. It seems Joseph Wedgwood got it right the first time in his production of Wedgwood.
