Antique Art Deco brass inlaid burl wood box, most likely used for cigars. Made in Germany, circa 1920''s. The fabulous brass inlaid box was almost certainly made by Erhard More »
Antique Art Deco brass inlaid burl wood box, most likely used for cigars. Made in Germany, circa 1920''s. The fabulous brass inlaid box was almost certainly made by Erhard and Sohne. Measures 6 1/8 inches long; 4 1/4 inches front to back; 2 inches high. Box with brass mounts. The top is inlaid with brass in a magnificent Egyptian theme scene. Taken from the reliefs of the Pharoahs, it depicts a hunting scene on the Nile. The water is full of fish. Above it, amidst beautifully decorative papyrus, are two boats with hunters, some spearing fish, others with bows and arrows shooting at geese that flutter about in an arc. A vase of flowers / urn and female rower complete the scene. The workmanship and artistry are breathtaking. THe quality of the wood in the background is quite beautiful. There are two signatures / makers marks on the box. One is on the lid, lower right and is a pair of initials in a circle. The other is on the bottom, on the metal border. Any advise as to who these signatures could belong to will be highly appreciated. Condition is very good. No damage/loss/restoration of any sort. Please enquire about our other rare brass inlaid wood pieces. Status: For Sale Reference#: 4183 Condition: good Year: 1900 Weight: 5 Title: DECO BRASS WOOD INLAY BOX HUMIDOR EGYPTIAN REVIVAL « Less

Extraordinary ivory: hp & signed animals, botanicals, jesters Exceptional gambling / games box & counters. Made of natural substances. Signed, hand-engraved and painted. More »
Extraordinary ivory: hp & signed animals, botanicals, jesters Exceptional gambling / games box & counters. Made of natural substances. Signed, hand-engraved and painted. Paris, France, 18th century. Measures a little over 3 1/4 inches long by 2 3/8inches wide. Rectangular box with hinged lid. Hinges believed to be original. Top and inside of lid and underneath bottom of lid are all handengraved and painted with an amazing assortment of human figures, animals, insects and beautiful botanicals: The top of the lid has a fruit and foliage-filled border. A pair of oval reserves on the sides each contain a figure of entertainment: one has a dancing minstrel beating time with his tambourine. The other has a Pierrot type figure. Possibly both were well-known theatrical figures. The top corners each contain an insect/butterfly while one corner shows a long-eared animal - possibly a rabbit of sorts, and the other a little prancing dog. The center of the top of the lid has an attached wheel that is moved by a brass knob. A hatch in the wheel displays the numbers, presumably for score-keeping. Underneath the base is beautifully decorated with a squirrel sitting amidst a floral and foliate display, insects hovering above. It is utterly charming as the long-nosed and long-eared critter smells the flowers. The inside bottom of the box has an attached scrolling metal reinforcement/decoration, very delicate and original to the box. The inside of the lid is beautifully painted with a botanical arrangement, depicted with great artistic ability and sensitivity. A panel at the bottom of this has a handwritten script that reads: Marixual le Jeune a Paris. Fecir. This was one of the best known makers of similar boxes in Paris of the time. WIthin, the box has a number of gambling chips. Some round, some rectangular, with canted corners and a pair of long rectangles. All are beautifully painted in the same hand as the rest of the decoration. Both sides are painted. The rectangles have numbers engraved in black in the center. While other boxes of this type can occasionally be found, this box has particularly beautiful decoration and is in very good, original condition. Antique snuff box made of silver, gold, mother of pearl, genuine precious gem stones (emerald, ruby, sapphire), hand engraved and enameled and with openwork lions and crown More »
Antique snuff box made of silver, gold, mother of pearl, genuine precious gem stones (emerald, ruby, sapphire), hand engraved and enameled and with openwork lions and crown flanking a huge heart-shaped garnet. From the prestigious estate of Mrs Mary Timmins, well-known collector and authority on antiques, who lectured on the subject in the 1940''s, this was one of the pieces she used in her talk on Women in Colonial Days. Her son told me that the box is RUssian, but I found no hallmarks. Box dates to the 19th century. Box measures 2 7/7 X2 1/4 inches. Height is just under 3/4 inch. Rectangular in shape, hinged, long, narrow thumbpiece in front of lid. Every side of the box is decorated. THe bottom outside is gilt with hand engraving of flowers and foliage. The sides are bordered by slightly protruding rims, with hand enamelled decoration in red, white and blue very finely painted inbetween. The top is covered first by a layer of mother of pearl. This has gilt overlay scrollwork over it, with a vignette in the middle with a pair of lions and a crown - very Royal looking. The standing lions hold a large heart-shaped red stone between them. Above and below are blue oval sapphires and on either side are rectangular emeralds. The corners each have an oval gem with smaller oval rubies on their inside corners. The inside is clearly gold on the bottom. The top is also metal, copper in colour, and textured like a match strike. I found no identifying marks on the box. Condition is very good. Antique octogonal lidded bowl / box, humidor. Made of brass, gilt lined and inlaid precious woods. European origin. Style dates it to Art Nouveau / Arts Crafts era circa 1880- 1910. The fabulous brass inlaid box was almost certainly made by Erhard and Sohne. Measures approx 6 inches accross from one point to another. Height is approx 3 1/2 inches to the top of the finial/handle. 8-sided box made of precious burl woods. Round base. Entire mount, inside and out is golden-coloured brass with the panels of wood entirely encircled and set inside the brass. Each panel has a different brass pattern over the wood, as does the top. The patterns show the elongated scrolling designs typical of the Art Nouveau period with a Celtic tone, typical of Arts and Crafts. The technique and work of this piece is quite magnificent. The inside, all shiny brass (looks gilded) needs a thorough clean, but there are no dings/dents. The whole piece - box/bowl and lid are in good, original condition. Pair of signed Arts and Crafts / Art Nouveau casket boxes made of mother of pearl mounted in gilt silver with figures of women and trees. Made late 19th century. Each More »
Pair of signed Arts and Crafts / Art Nouveau casket boxes made of mother of pearl mounted in gilt silver with figures of women and trees. Made late 19th century. Each casket is a little over 3 1/4 inches long at the back and 1 5/8 inches high. The front is convex or bowed. The lid is mounted in a sterling silver, gilt washed frame, with deviates in the front center to form a marvellous depiction of a maiden standing over an arch, in front of a flowering tree. There are many levels: the background is the white mother of pearl that forms most of the box. WIthin the arch of the metal, it is iridescent in shades that glitter with the angle that light catches it - from pink through green to yellow. The relief sculpted tree with chrysanthemums on top shows typical aesthetic movement attention to stretched and stylised natural forms. The gilding is worn in many parts on the silver. The top of each box has a raised silver monogram MTC. The back of each box is hallmarked with a head facing right and a maker''s mark A.F. WHile Alexander Fisher might have made something like these boxes, he worked in England, so we are still ignorant of the actual maker, AF. Signed FAURE LIMOGES enamel on copper box depicting an exotic bird amidst flowers in the Japanese / Chinese taste. Made in France, early 20th century. Measures 3 3/4 More »
Signed FAURE LIMOGES enamel on copper box depicting an exotic bird amidst flowers in the Japanese / Chinese taste. Made in France, early 20th century. Measures 3 3/4 inches long; 3 inches wide and over 1 3/8inches high. Box is made of metal, believed to be copper, light orange in colour and engine turned on sides and bottom. Inside has an impressed 10 and is lined in black velvet, which might be a later addition since it is in almost mint condition. Lid is hinged and domed. It has a brown enamel ground, decorated with an elaborate scene of a fantastic bird alighting on a branch, surrounded by huge flowers and swirling masses, which might be clouds, as seen in Chinese and Japanese art work. The bird is blue and yellow, outlined in gold. Flowes in pink, apricot, red and lots of shades of green and yellow foliage. Signed in gold letters FAURE Limoges. France. This is believed to be for Camille Faure, well known Limoges enamel artist. Condition is very good. No dings/dents to copper. Enamel has no cracks/chips.
