Fabulous antique French box decorated elaborately with pique, pearl borders, enamel cabochons and a fine enamel cartouche, a portrait medallion. The interior of the box is lined with wood; for cigarettes, tobacco? It's large, 5" long, so I think it is not a snuff box. The bronze dore body is machine decorated. Condition is good; the inside clasp is broken. There are some minor losses to enamel and pique. The box is not signed, other than marked "Made in France" on the bottom. The work is fine quality, including of course, the pearls lining the top. So it is likely of sevres or Limoges manufacture. Circa late 1800's. « Less

Seljuk Bronze Lidded Ewer - FF.121, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 1200 AD to 1300 AD, Dimensions:14" (35.6cm) high x 7.75" (19.7cm) wide, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Seljuk Medium: Bronze, In the 9th century, hordes of nomadic Turkic horseman living on the outskirts of the Muslim world began to migrate westward into the heart of Central Asia. By the 10 century, a branch known as the House of Seljuk had broken off from the Oghuz confederation of Turkomen tribesmen, arrived into mainland Persia, and settled in the province of Khurasan. Overtime, the Seljuks converted to Islam and began to adopt the Persian language and culture. In the 11th century, the Seljuks set up an independent state under their leader Tugrul Bey with its capital in Isfahan, initially under the auspices of the Abbasid Caliph in Baghdad. The arts thrived during the Seljuk period as the Turkic rulers patronized Persian culture, arts, and literature. « Less

The elegant floral decorative motifs engraved into the sides of the ring highlight the ancient button without distracting attention away from it. At first, the idea of buttons in Roman fashion appears odd, considering Ancient Roman citizens are traditionally portrayed wearing togas. However, a button such as this once would have likely secured an ancient leather garment, perhaps of a type worn by soldiers under their armor. Clearly, this item would have been quite a luxurious piece of clothing to deserve buttons of bronze. The charming, almost comical that decorate the button reveal that even a costume formality such as buttons were treated with the same attention to detail and love of decoration as the textiles themselves. The wide face, with alert eyes and groomed hair, appears to look more like a mask than a representation of a person’s face. Forged from bronze, this button was in itself quite valuable and would have doubtlessly held in place the garments of a wealthy individual. This beautiful ring emulates the enduring taste and style of the Classics and surely would have been just as admired in antiquity as it is today. - (FJ.7134) « Less
