The painting shows Italian fishing boats with a villa and steps leading down to the sea. The colors are murky and muted. Lots of contrast with the Italian tile roof and the green foliage against the blue water. The sails on the boats are creamy and rust against a mountainous background. There is a provocative stormy sea shown at sunset using rich warm contrasts in color. The painting looks like the Northern California coastline near Bodega Bay. It has a fishing boat on one side with lots of open water. The other side features a Eucalyptus tree boarder with floral accents against a rock wall. The painting is in good condition with very slight rough spots near the top left corner. It is signed on the bottom left. The is a very nice decor painting that will go well in any warm environment. Current circa 14" wide by 11" high unframed 20 1/2" wide by 19" high framed This is a charming coastal painting of the cloudy California bluffs, wildflowers and ocean. It is painted in the area of Summerland near Santa Barbara. The painting features vibrant colors in the wildflowers while the rest of the painting reflect the cloudy day. The painting is framed in a gold leaf Arts & Crafts style wide frame making it measure 20 1/2" wide by 19" high framed. It is from my own collection and it is in excellent condition. The painting is signed in the bottom right corner. James Dudley Slay III was born on October 2, 1953 in Jackson, Mississippi. Slay began his formal instruction at the New England School of Design. He briefly attended the Otis Art Institute in Pasadena, California. He followed this with personal tutoring from Russian impressionist Sergei Bongart. He also studied with Karl Dempwolf and Frank Serrano at the California Art Club. His specialty is painting in the plein air tradition and in his studio. His works can be found in private collections nationwide and in permanent display at the American Museum of Art in Petropavlovsk, Kamechatka Russia. He has exhibited in juried art shows across the state. Slay is listed in ART.com and the Artist''s Bluebook.   « Less

Circa 1920''s 20"W x 24"H Unframed 34 1/2"W x 29 1/2"H Framed Newly cleaned. California coastal plains. Solitary pine hugs the surf on a rocky promentory. Angry sky and rough sea. Great color and detail. Simple gold frame. This is a Carmel Seascape by listed California artist Florence Upson Young. It is signed in the foliage. She lived from 1872-1974 and is very well listed in Who''s Who in Pacific Coast painters. Listed also with by Edan Hughes in Who''s Who in American Art. She was widely exhibited in the Los Angeles Ebell Club and The Greek Theater. She studied in her early life with Kenyon Cox and William Meritt Chase. She was a founder of Friendly Arts Club and contributed to Horizons in Creative Art.   « Less

The painting is framed in it''s original arts and crafts period frame. The painting is very good in workmanship but needs restoration. It is soiled with caricature and slight paint loss.
