Sometimes (ok, too often) I buy posters not because they are ''important'' or necessarily ''sellable'', but because there is something about them which compels me to own them. This works well when you are a collector, less well when you are a dealer. But regardless of whether you are buying for pleasure or for business, poster buyers buy because there is something close to a need to buy - something about the poster which speaks to them, which forces them - almost - to reach into their pocket... (I make the same argument when I shop for shoes, but that''s another matter.) I found this poster in the basement of a poster dealer in Marseilles, and aside from the fact that it was expensive, I didnt know very much about it. But there was something about the colors - subdued and in shades of ecru, orange and mushroom - and the images, and the fact that every inch of the poster was covered with detail which mademe reach once more into my pretty empty pockets to search for crumbs. The poster hung on my wall for quite some time and I was unable to find out much about it - I asked my South African friends for help - figuring that Africaans was close to Dutch - but they came up with red herrings. I asked every Dutch client and friend, but to no avail. Until, until, until one kind and generous client pointed me in the right direction and told me just about everything I needed to know: that the symbol/stamp/chop of the artist in the bottom right hand corner of the poster (near the date stamp) is of the artist known as van der Vecht, that the printer (Senefelder, of Amsterdam) was known as one of the best at the time, and still, and that the poster promoted a business school which was located on a street called Overtoom which still exists in the busy city of Amsterdam. Mercury, the god of business, trade, profit and commerce, is shown with an owl, the Athenian symbol of wisdom - perhaps in the hope that the graduates of this particular school will make money wisely? - and the whole poster is, to me at least, a marvel of what I call Gothic Art Nouveau. This poster is rather rare - the Dutch weren''t as prolific as the French or Belgians with their poster art - and its size, coloration and subject matter make it not only spectacular, but valuable and quite a find. Poster measures 29 x 41 inches, is linen backed and in very good A- condition. Please note that all of our posters, prints, pochoirs and ephemera are vintage, non- reproduction works of art. Montreal has been home to Alcan (now Rio Tinto Alcan) for decades, and proudly so. While the company is a multi-national with tens of thousands of employees around the globe and huge projects which relate to smelters and mining, they have also studiously amassed a rather amazing art collection over the years and did, at one time, commission artists to create posters for to highlight some of their collections and projects. This poster was for one of those endeavors. Artist Julia Harris uses a wash of colours in this limited edition poster to create the impression of a watercolor - it is magnificent and in excellent (A-) condition. These posters were in the private collection of a noted jazz musician and producer and are only a couple of hundreds which we have just received. The others will be appearing in our ebay store shortly. Poster measures 32 x 20 inches. All of our posters, prints and pochoirs are authentic, vintage items. Please e-mail any questions or requests for additional photos. We are happy to ship worldwide - please note that the price marked for international shipping is for surface shipping: if you would like air mail or courrier costs please let us know and we will provide you with those costs. Thank you for your interest. Status: For Sale Reference#: JHAlc Condition: A- Year: 1982 Country: Canada Height: 20 in. (50.80 cm) Width: 32 in. 24 x 32
It would be hard to find a more classically Deco image than this one which was purchased recently in Europe. Advertising a radio manufacturer called Fornett who evidently had at least three models to offer (at affordable prices and unequaled value), this poster was printed in Strasbourg in the 1940s. We have had this poster lined to protect its investment value and physical integrity. We think it is an impressive and interesting tribute to Deco artistry and would make a great addition to any collection. Radios were perhaps one of the earliest forms of entertainment which permitted masses of people to enjoy entertainment at once - the precursor to television and moving pictures. Poster is linen-backed and in very good condition.

A color plate from an exquisite book called Les Programmes Illustres, by Ernest Maindron, published in 1897, by Librairie Nilsson-Per Lamm, Paris purchased at auction, and filled with the most unbelievably detailed and remarkable works of art we have seen... granted we are biased and truly moved by works from this period, by truly, these are gems, in remarkable, mint condition, and more than 100 years old. The auction catalog reads: '' ''I often ask myself what they, the curious of the year 2000, will think of us, whom we are cut off from by a century of dreadful events; them, knowing that which we don''t yet know and that we nearly suspect, what will they say of our old frivolity with all that has passed? Won''t they pity us, like we today have pity for the aristocratic society whose ancient prints we refer to with carelessness and levity?'' Thus mused Pierre Veber in his prefacing comments for the Programmes Illustres, a hardcover compendium of some of the most beautiful menus, invitations, business cards and announcements of the Belle Epoque. Little could he have known how off the mark his thoughts were, as today we look back at the virtuosity these posterists displayed with the limited technology of the time.'' (Rennert) Each sheet is 9.25 x 12.5 inches, and the images on the sheet vary - this one, by Tancrede Synave (1870-1936) is for a play called Mlle. Fifi and the Theatre Libre and occupies almost the whole page.
