In the 1950''s Chinese Modern was all the rage. Remember in I love Lucy when Lucy bought a houseful of Chinese Modern furniture? Or when they went to California and there was that big sweeping bough of cherry blossoms on the wall? This vintage tile panel is hand painted on cream and beige speckled tile. Colorful silver capped paper lanterns swing on sparkling silver strings under a bough of bamboo leaves. Very 50''s. Very tiki. Very cool. There are 24 tiles, each 4.25 inches square. The tile blanks were made by Dal Monte of Monterrey Mexico. The overall size of the panel is 25.75 by 17.25 inches. If installed, grout lines would make this a little larger, or it can just be glued on board and framed. Never installed, the tiles are in pristine condition. The marks on the back of these dust pressed tiles dates the manufacture to 1949. Sixty three tiles comprise this scene of three salmon pink flamingos on the marshy edge of a lake, It has an overall dimension of 39.5 inches by 30.5 inches, without grout lines. Each tile is 4.25 inches square. The panel was never installed, has been in storage 60 years, and the condition is as new. Rare, rare RARE! Traditionally these panels were used as focal points on the back wall over the tub and shower. Normally I see this type of tile in a single color glaze. The addition of more colors makes it much more interesting. The condition is very good, with only minor edge flaws, and some staining from soot along the sides where it was enclosed in a fireplace surround. The back is unmarked.
