WEBB,A.C.(American,born 1889. Nashville, N.C.) SAINT-TROPEZ, oil on canvas. This painting was done by well-known American Impressionist A. C. Webb during his sojourn in France in the Twenties, and is signed and dated 1925. Saint-Tropez had just been "discovered" by the writer Colette and had not gained the worldwide popularity it has today with the "in" set. It still looks the same now -- at least from this angle! Webb was early on a student at New York's Art Student's League. Traveling to France, he became a member of Paris's illustrious Association Artistique Americaine, where he produced a large number of paintings and engravings, many of them acquired by the French government. He is well represented in museums in America and abroad. Approximately 19-1/2 inches by 24 inches. Superb condition, fine gilt frame. « Less

Water color on silk, a fine painting of swimming fish with swirling weeds. Registered Qing painter Zhang-can. Nien-Nien-Yo-Yu, is a popular Chinese proverb usually used in the new year’s celebration. Yo-Yu, means Having Fish or Abundance. Then my clients, you will know how nice the metaphor will be - if you hang a painting of fish in the room in this Chinese New Year’s season! Nice painting accompanied by a lovely poem. Minor defects due to age. Some simple professional restoration work will do the picture justice.

FROM WIKIPEDIA: Congo Crossing is a 1956 adventure film directed by Joseph Pevney and starring Virginia Mayo and George Nader. Most of the exterior sequences were shot in the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden. Plot synopsis: Congotanga, West Africa, has no extradition laws; the government is controlled by foreign gangsters, headed by Carl Rittner (Tonio Selwart). The latest plane from Europe carries Louise Whitman (Virginia Mayo), (fleeing a French murder charge), and Mannering (Raymond Bailey), who pays resident hit man O''Connell (Michael Pate) to kill her. Through a chain of circumstances Louise, O''Connell, and heroic surveyor David Carr (George Nader) end up alone in the jungle on Carr''s mission to determine the true border of Congotanga... in which Rittner is keenly interested. Although vintage movie posters are not usually my thing, this one was just so over the top that I couldn''t resist... I love Peter Lorre looking evil over in the top left corner. The poster measures 27 x 41.5 inches and is mounted on linen - it is in very good condition. All of our posters, prints and pochoirs are authentic, vintage items. Please see ourour other items for sale - check back often we add things almost every day! The history of every country can clearly be seen through its posters. Nowhere is this truer than in the case of China - a vast country with a rich and diverse history of poster art. Perhaps this was because posters presented an effective and colorful means of communicating messages to a broad multi-lingual population, or perhaps it was because, as always, posters could convey in images what politicians could only hint at in speeches -- whatever the reasons, Chinese propaganda poster art is a niche market in and of itself. After the Founding of the People''s Republic of China in 1949, and throughout the 1950''s and 60''s - particularly during the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution - Chinese poster artists were very active in terms of quantity and inventiveness. There are a huge variety of styles in the posters - some harsh, some naturalistic, some with the so- called ''sweet icing'' to give the people a more idealized look and to convey a more positive cheerful outlook... In short, there is something for everyone when it comes to Chinese propaganda posters. Many of the posters were calendars and product shots, occasionally (like here) incorporating a celebrity spokesperson. I like the Art Deco border which surrounds this poster and which is unusual in Chinese posters. Poster measures 14 x 28.5 inches, and is linen backed. Overall very good condition with small restoration evident in margins - none affecting image. This poster comes from the private collection of a noted author, collector and lecturer who has travelled widely in China and around the world. His poster collection is massive, and his knowledge quite legendary. He recently put together an exhibition of Chinese posters which was shown in national museums in Canada and France (this poster was part of that exhibition) and we are pleased and proud to have been asked to sell his posters. We are happy to ship worldwide - Note that our shipping rates for international customers is for standard surface shipping - expedited shipping is available at an additional cost (which will be calculated at the time of purchase based on buyers location and charged in addition to surface rates. The poster was designed by Shou He for the Changchun Co on Kaifeng, Shanghai, and the text says (in part) : we are specialized in illustrated card and poster calendars. Poster measures 20 x 30, was produced in 1935 and is linen backed. Overall B+ condition. In short, there is something for everyone when it comes to Chinese propaganda posters. Many of the posters were calendars and product shots, occasionally (like here) incorporating a celebrity spokesperson. The woman featured was, I am told, the Chinese version of Amelia Earhardt (interesting that there was one in every country in the world, but I digress). She is shown in her spotless white gloves, in front of a plane (and if you look very closely you can see the red army guard working on the plane in the background), and the calendar is on the bottom (there is some image loss in the calendar section of the poster but it is nominal and doesnt at all detract from the integrity of the poster overall). The cigarettes featured are appropriately named World Hero and Pyramid - allusions to the greatness of the woman featured in the poster and the wonderful distances she had covered. I also like the Art Deco border which surrounds this poster and which is unusual in Chinese posters. Poster measures 20 x 30, was produced by in Sheng, for the Fu Xing Tobacco Co. in Macao in 1934 and is linen backed. Overall very good condition.
