This is a stunning example of an 18thc Canakkale large plate or dish.It is as usual slip glazed then painted in an abstract underglaze blue pattern with turquoise areas and brown scrolling.Measuring 16in or 40cm across this piece is in excellent condition with no chipping only some minor frits.There are no repairs or cracks.Again from the same collection this is rather heavy.I suggest that anyone interested in this and the other pieces I am listing check the anomolous pieces from Canakkale in the V&A's collection.The Canakkale potteries were one of the three major potteries of Turkey the other two working in fritware,namely Iznik and Kutahya.I will be listing a very rare late 19thc Kuutahya dish signed by the man who revived the kiln in the 1880's so please have a look over the next few days as I will also be listing some Ottoman silver with Tughras and other very fine Middle Eastern silver works. This is a fine piece of Kutahya by the man who restarted the kilns c 1880. The Kutahya kilns took over from the Iznik in the late 17thc as Iznik production almost ceased at this date.The works from Kutahya were mainly tiles but other practical items were produced.Towards the beginning of the 19thc production at Kutahya ceased and was revived in an Iznik style decoration by Muhammed Hilmi Effendi.He and his son were totally responsible for the present state of the kilns which are today producing some very fine pieces. Needless to say the pieces such as the one I am selling though very decorative are a little primitive but are also very rare as most of Hilmi's production was tiles. The body of these pieces is a fine fritware with underglaze blue yellow aubergine and a very distntive red identical to the Iznik red. The dish is in good condition with a small restoration to a foot-rim chip.It has no cracks or chips to the body itself and is signed on the base. I have shown the base of a bottle by the same artist which has been published in a book of his work. This is an oportunity to own a very rae piece of Ottoman art. The plate has a diameter of 9 7/8in or 25cm.   « Less

This is an attractive piece from the Canakkale kilns dating from the mid 19thc.As with all of these pieces it shows three spur marks around the central motifs and centre of dishes in this case.These appear as apparently unglazed areas but of reasonably constant shape and are a confirmation amongst many others of the origin of the pieces as all Canakkale pieces should have this. This dish is decorated with flowers in turquoise and brown with an abstract circular design around the border.Unlike the larger pieces this is more dish than large plate shape with a reasonably noticeable upwards edge to it. The dish in very good condition with an unglazed back and flat foot of reddish body has a diameter of 12.25in and has a depth of 2in or 31cm x 6cm.   « Less

This is a lovely large plate by Imaemon Imaizumi XII in Nabeshima style decorated in underglaze blue and overglaze enamels on a very white ground.The reverse is decoated with caash symbols in underglaze blue and his signature. The technique is such that the floral sprays seem to be coming out of the plate and a very interesting three dimensional effect is obtained. The dish which measures 11in.or 20cm wide is in perfect condition and in its original box,a bonus as the tomobako is fully signed.I would date this to the 1950's or perhaps a little earlier. As compared to his son whose work is perhaps better known I consider that Imaemon XII was better in many respects when it came to more traditional pieces and his body is much purer.   « Less

This is a very large plate covered in a white slip on a reddish body both inside and out to the flat footrim and would date to the 19thc probably early. The decoration in turquoise and black is that of a ewer surrounded by leafy branches.There are two borders the outer being the slip surrounded by a black border resembling a Chinese ruyi. The plate is in excellent order,shows the three spur marks typical of this ware and has a diameter of 16.5in. or 41.5cm.This is from the same collection as the others and is quite different to the better known Canakkale ceramics but is absolutely correct.   « Less
