A Wonderful complete boxed set of Vantines Perfumes in fine Japanese red lacquer gilt accented box. The box is lovely cinnabar red lacquer with a motif of birds and bamboo on the top, florals on all four sides. The distinctive box has deeply cut ridges which are very Japanese in style. The box interior is lined in deep purple velvet. VANTINES was a chic New York boutique which carried expensive Japanese specialty items in the 1920's. A delightful find, all original with labels, gold tassels and faint fragrances of "JA FLEUR" "MIKADO" and "VAN SAN" lingering in the beautiful EMBOSSED "Vantines" signature crystal bottles. Condition very good. Wear is normal for a fine Vanity item. No chips to bottles.Light surface wear to lacquer box, no chips. Such jugs were produced for the transport and storage of liquids early on. Vessels as such would have had thick walls and strong handles.The jug has a cylindrical body and an applied handle. The rim is out-splayed and the lip rounded. The neck is cylindrical with a tapering at the top. In antiquity, beverages were served in flasks characterised by wide bases, long wide necks and flaring mouths. The shapes of such vessels made it possible to use them for mixing liquids, such as wine with water. The special necks facilitated pouring. Flasks as such became common in the Late Roman period and bear little ornamentation. This flask consists of a tubular rim, which is folded inwards, a flaring mouth, a cylindrical neck and a squat globular body sitting on a concave base. The body is in the shape of two tubes connected by a common wall and a flat base. Two handles rise from the middle of the body to the rim, where they are linked by a basket handle. An applies trail spirals around the body; the trail was wound before the vessel was divided into two tubes.Vessels such as this were believed to have been used to store and apply kohl-eye makeup. The fact that they consist of two tubes meant that they could have been used to store two different colours of makeup. The long tube meant that a spatula could have been inserted. - (BB.1620   « Less
