This vintage Japanese bamboo flower basket is signed by one of the true masters of the art, Buseki Suishin. He was born in 1888 and died in 1983. At age 12 he studied under the 'god' of the Japanese basket golden age, Iizuka Hosai I. Established his own studio later on in Tokyo where he won numerous prizes including at the 1922 Ministry of Commerce Expo and prizes in 1934 and 1936. He is featured in "Bamboo Masterworks : Japanese Baskets from the Lloyd Cotsen Collection. Slight break on one of the bottom legs but unseen unless you look underneath. c.1935. In the original maroon lacquered wood box which has the Japanese characters "Hachiman Daibosatsu" on the front, the box also has written on the side, "Monchiru To Gin Kin Tsukuri" meaning this gumbai has scattered mons or family crests and is made of sliver and gold. The edge is silver. On the actual gumbai there are also the characters 'Hachiman Daibosatsu' in raised relief, meaning the boddhisattva is from the Hachiman Shrine. C.1910.
