For Sale is a wonderful and early form made by The Hampshire Pottery of Keene, New Hampshire. The form is call an "Artichoke" Vase and it is in the very desirable Matte More »
For Sale is a wonderful and early form made by The Hampshire Pottery of Keene, New Hampshire. The form is call an "Artichoke" Vase and it is in the very desirable Matte Cucumber Green Glaze. The Vase stands 2 3/4" tall and is 4 3/4" in diameter.
The Embossed Exterior of Vase displays a very realistic appearance of an "Artichoke". It has an outstanding matte Cucumber Green Glaze that resembles real Cucumber skin. The Leaves look Hand Carved with wonderful Veining running throught this nice vase. The Form is crisp and very well detailed. Some refer to this as a Cabbage Shape but it is really an Artichoke.
The Vase is considered to be in excellent condition free of nicks, chips, dings and hairlines. When looking directly into the Vase it is not perfectly symetrically and really has that hand and mold made look. The piece is signed with "Mount Vernon" written in block letters with the same green glaze as the vase. There is the Start of the letter "H" in Hampshire above this but the rest has been blocked out. The raised mold number 24 can clearly be seen and this is the shape number in the Hampshire Catalog pages. The Vase has that nicely ground bottom along with Hampshire Pottery's white clay bottom. You folks who collect and deal in Matte Green Art Pottery know exactly what you are looking at.
It is my belief that Hampshire Pottery made this for "Mount Vernon" and I suspect it is the gift shop at George Washington, our First President 's estate. I would have to do further research to confirm this. I have owned at least 20 of these through the years and seen another 20-30 for sale. I have never had any of them signed in this manner and would consider this quite rare. I guess this would be considered an advertising piece as well.
Hampshire Pottery started producing Matte Glazes in 1891. This was 7 years earlier than their main Competitor "Grueby Faience" of Boston, Mass. Hampshire Pottery resembles the style of Grueby but were much more affordable as they were mold made pieces as opposed to hand thrown. It is my assumption that this is an earlier piece of Hampshire. The M in a circle mark was used from 1904-1914. I would guess this piece was made, Circa 1898-1903.
This will make a wonderful addition to any matte Pottery collection of Art Pottery and would look great on that Stickley Mission Arts and Crafts Bookcase. « Less

For Sale is a beautiful and colorful pattern produced by The Roseville Art Pottery Company of Roseville, Ohio. The pattern is called "Cosmos" and the shape is a double handled Rose Bowl Vase. The Rose Bowl is rather large as it stands 6 1/8" Tall and is 7 7/8" in diameter at its widest point.
The Vase Display a Background color of matte Robins Egg Blue tones with Teal and Beige band. The textured background gives the appearance of a painted wicker basket. The Cosmos flowers are multi colored. There are beautiful orchids, lilac and Ivory Flowers all with yellow centers. The Vase is accented with 2 small applied ear shaped handles and an irregular shaped top opening.
The Vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The piece is signed on the bottom with the "Roseville U.S.A." Raised Relief Signature Mark, as well as the shape number, 376-6". The signature is one of the most crisp I have ever seen. There is also the letter "l" written in Blue Ink or a grease pencil. This is probably the Finishers initial.
This is a Quality piece of Roseville Art Pottery. This is one of the Cleanest, Crisp examples I have ever owned in this Pattern. Those of you who collect this pattern and want an excellent example both in form and Glaze, need not look any further. This Rose Bowl was made circa 1939. « Less

For Sale is a nice piece of art pottery made by The Roseville Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The pattern is called "Jonquil" and the shape is a Double Handled Squat More »
For Sale is a nice piece of art pottery made by The Roseville Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The pattern is called "Jonquil" and the shape is a Double Handled Squat Vase. The Vase measures is a nice cabinet size as it stands 3" tall and is 7" in diameter outside handles measurement.
The Vase depicts two bunches per side of three Jonquil Daffodils with yellow centers on a squat volcano shape. Each of them are embossed above tall green leaves on a mottled light Brown organic like background. There is darker brown shading around the flowers, rims and handles. There are two free flowing handles attached just under the rim looping out and under to the bottom. The handles have the appearance of what looks like a set of ears for handles. This is truly a beautiful pattern and a unique shape produced by Roseville Pottery.
The vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no issues to report. The piece is unsigned as is the case with this pattern as most of them carried paper labels at one time. You can still see a number 3 and remnants of 2 numbers previous to the 3 written in a Red Grease Pencil. This is the remnants of the Shape number. This Vase is known as shape number 523-3" in the Roseville Pottery Catalog pages. Guaranteed to be original and in excellent shape free of nicks, chips, and hairlines.
This is a hard to find shape in this pattern. This Vase was made Circa 1931. « Less

For Sale is a Beautiful Art Pottery Vase made by The Roseville Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The Pattern is called "Peony" and it is in the most popular large double More »
For Sale is a Beautiful Art Pottery Vase made by The Roseville Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The Pattern is called "Peony" and it is in the most popular large double handled vase shape. The Vase has some size to it as it 9 3/8" tall and is 7 3/4" in diameter outside handles measurement.
The Vase displays a background of horizontal and vertical wavy ridges with a 2 color Glaze background. The Coral/Pink starts at the top of the Vase and changes at the bottom to a Deep Moss Green. The Vase displays 2 very beautiful embossed Yellow Peonies with Light Brown Pistils on one side with a Peony Flower in bloom and a flower bud on the other side. The vase is further accented with 2 wide Buttress style triangular handles. This is a very beautiful and Popular Roseville's Pattern.
This Vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, or chips. The only issue to report is the usual crazing with this glaze and a small nick on the very bottom side outside ring. This is meaningless and cannot be seen when displayed. There is also a glaze miss on the bottom of the triangular handled on the double Peony side. These are both pictured for you to view. The Vase is signed on the bottom in raised relief "Roseville U.S.A." and the mold number 64-9". There is also an small letter "x" and the letter "F" written in a blue grease pencil. These are more than likely the finisher's marks.
This piece was made Circa 1942 during World War II. Those of you who collect this pattern and want a nice crisp example this would be an excellent choice. « Less

For Sale is a lovely Art Pottery Vase made by The Roseville Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The Pattern is called "Pinecone" and it is done in their highly collected More »
For Sale is a lovely Art Pottery Vase made by The Roseville Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The Pattern is called "Pinecone" and it is done in their highly collected Brown background glaze. This Pattern is one of Roseville's most desirable to collect. The Vase is a nice size as it stands 7 5/16" tall and is 4 1/8" in diameter outside handles measurement. The top opening is 3 1/8" outside measurements.
The Vase has a very pleasing Caramel Brown background Glaze with the background below the Pine Needles being a lighter yellow brown color. The piece depicts very realistic handles in the form of branches joined to a Pine Cone with Brown/Green Needles protruding from the Cone. The Pine Cone itself has very nice detail done in a light brown glaze color. The inside of the Vase is very clean and shows a blue green top opening glaze with a medium to light brown glaze underneath that reaching down to the bottom. The foot has a very "Futura" or futuristic style to it.
This was Frank Ferrell's most popular design that he ever created while working at The Roseville Pottery Company. In fact, the company would have had to close it doors if it wasn't for the success of this line. The Pine Cone line was considered the most Popular Line ever made at Roseville Pottery and that is still evident today. There are 4 colors that Pine Cone was made and they are Blue, Brown, and Green and Pink. Pink Commands the Highest Price and is Rarely seen. Blue Commands the next highest price with Brown not too far behind.
The Vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks nicks, chips or dings. This is really an excellent example as there isn't even a pin pop in the glaze. The Vase is signed with the "Roseville" incised mark along with the pattern number "840-7". There is the number "7" or the letter "L" depending how you look at it on the bottom. This is written in a dark blue grease pencil. More than likely this was the finishers number or Artist Initial. There is also the number "838" written in a red grease pencil. This was the way Roseville marked their pieces with the form number on items that did not carry a signature mark or only had a foil label. This is an oddity and mistake as the form number is actually a 840-7".
This is a hard to find vase in the Roseville Pinecone line. I'm quite sure the buyer will be quite pleased with their purchase. This Vase was made Circa 1935-40. « Less

For Sale is a lovely piece of art pottery made by the Roseville Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The pattern is called "Snowberry" and the shape is a double handled vase. This piece of Pottery is a nice cabinet size as it stands 6 1/4" tall and is approximately 4 1/2" in daimeter outside handles measurement. The top opening is 3 3/8" in diameter outside measurements.
The pattern is a very Pleasing one as it depicts very Nice clusters of White Berries with a handful of Detailed Green Leaves on Brown winding branches flowing from the top to the bottom. This is set against a Matt Country Blue Glaze. There are two wonderfully applied buttressed triangular shaped handles on each side that come up off the waist of the vessel and they attach just under the top rim. These handles are molded right into the body.
The Vase is considered to be in Excellent Condition as there are no cracks, chips, nicks or dings. The piece is signed with the raised relief "Roseville U.S.A. 1V-6" signature and mold mark. For Sale is a very nice piece of art pottery made by The Brush McCoy Company of Roseville, Ohio. The shape is a large double handled footed Grecian Urn shaped vase. The Vase More »
For Sale is a very nice piece of art pottery made by The Brush McCoy Company of Roseville, Ohio. The shape is a large double handled footed Grecian Urn shaped vase. The Vase is quite large as it stands 8 7/8" tall and is 8 3/4" in diameter outside handle measurements. The opening or mouth of the Vase is 3 1/4" in diameter on the outside rim.
The Vase depicts an all over Mottled Green Frothy Glaze that is outstanding. The form is a Classic Green Urn shape but there is an Arts and Crafts flare to it. There are the tops of raised vertical panels dropping down from the ring at the neck of the vessel. There are 2 applied handles that rise out of the mid section and rise up to this ring. These handles resemble a "Goose Neck" with its head turned backwards. This Vase sits on a ringed round foot.
The Vase is considered to be in Excellent Condition as there are no cracks, chips, nicks or dings. I really cannot find any excuses for this wonderful large vase. This is a superb example of this form and Glaze. I have never seen another one like it.
I am not 100% sure this was made by Brush McCoy either. I had 1 other person tell me that it could be a Monmouth Pottery piece. In my research I was unable to document this form but I was able to document the style of the handle and that is what led me to believe this is an early Brush McCoy Vase. This style of handle was used by Brush McCoy on several documented pieces. I welcome anyone's opinion that may know something different. I have shown this to the best Pottery people in the business and they are not sure who made it either.
This Vase would look outstanding in any Mission, Arts and Crafts, style of decor. This Vase was made Circa 1900-1920. « Less

For Sale is a wonderful piece of Art Pottery made by the Terra Cotta Tile Company (TECO) of Terra Cotta, Illinois which was near Chicago. I have a beautiful Matte Green Orb More »
For Sale is a wonderful piece of Art Pottery made by the Terra Cotta Tile Company (TECO) of Terra Cotta, Illinois which was near Chicago. I have a beautiful Matte Green Orb Bud Vase. This vase is a nice cabinet size as it stands about 4 1/2" tall and is 4 3/4" in diameter at its widest point. The top opening is 1 3/8" in diameter outside measurement.
The vase is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The piece is signed twice on the bottom with Teco's infamous "T" with the "eco" underneath the right side of the T. There is also the numbers "25" written in green glaze. This form also has the indented ring where this mark lies. This is the sign of an Original Teco as the Fakes do not have this same bottom. The exterior bottom underside edge is ground smooth and is very similar to Hampshire Pottery's method of finishing the pieces of pottery.
Teco exemplifies pottery of the "Prairie School" Arts and Crafts movement of which Frank Lloyd Wright made so popular. In 1886 the Gates Pottery was established as a subsidiary with William D. Gates as its president. Gates used the facilities to experiment with clays and glazes in an effort to design a line of Art Pottery which led to the introduction of Teco Pottery (TErra COtta) in 1902. This is a quality piece of Art Pottery made by one of the Arts and Crafts Movement most important Potters. Teco competed heavily against Grueby and Fulper for this once flourishing market.
This is a rather hard to find shape as the collectors don't let these go. This piece of Teco is known as Shape # 25. This piece of Teco is considered early as it was made, Circa 1902-1910. « Less

For Sale is a Lovely piece of Art Pottery made by The Van Briggle Pottery Company of Colorado Springs, Colorado. This Vase is known as a "Stylized Iris" Flower Vase and it is More »
For Sale is a Lovely piece of Art Pottery made by The Van Briggle Pottery Company of Colorado Springs, Colorado. This Vase is known as a "Stylized Iris" Flower Vase and it is Shape number #167 in The Van Briggle Catalog Line. The Vase is an impressive size as it stands 13 1/4" tall and is approximately 7" in diameter outside handles measurements. The top opening is 1 3/4" in diameter inside and 2 1/4" outside measurement. This Vase is done in one of Van Briggle's most highly collected glazes known as "Mountain Craig" Brown.
The Vase depicts 2 stylized Iris flowers, one on each side. Both one of these Flowers have vertical raised stems that rise up from the bottom to the bottom of each flower. Next to these stems are embossed or raised leaves. They start out narrow at the bottom and appear to be Ribbing but they expand to leaves once they reach the top the of the vessel. The matte brown background glaze along with the sage green over spray on the flowers gives this piece that earthy realistic appearance. There are 2 applied looped handles at the bottom giving this vase it stable appearance.
This piece is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, chips, nicks or dings. The inside of the vase shows minimal wear. There are a few minor glaze pin pops along the top portion of the vase. This piece is signed on the bottom with the Impressed Van Briggle Double A Logo Mark along with "VAN BRIGGLE" in large Block Letters. This mark helps date this wonderful piece of Art Pottery.
The Mountain Craig formula was lost in the 1935 Flood and none were made after this date. This vase was made in the late 1920's early 1930's This is a wonderful hard to find form in any condition. This is an excellent example in both form and glaze. The colors are strong and it has wonderful definition. Those of you who collect Arts and Crafts Design Pottery will surely welcome this addition into your collection. I am sure it will look just great on that Stickley, Mission, Arts and Crafts Style Bookcase.
This piece was made circa 1928-1935. « Less
