Landscape painting of Colonial cottage and flower garden, attributed to Jane Peterson (American, 1876-1965). This work is unsigned but was purchased at the public auction of the Estate of Jane Peterson Philipp, held by O. Rundle Gilbert Auctioneers, on Aug. 9 & 10, 1966, in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Medium: oil on artist board. Size: 18" x 24". Jane Peterson was one of Americas most successful female painters of the 20th century. She developed an original style that blended the traditional approaches to painting with that of the more innovative Impressionist and Fauvist movements. Her works utilize bold color combinations and spontaneous brush strokes. In 1925, she married M. Bernard Philipp and took up a summer residence at his 'Rocky Hill' estate in Ipswich, MA, returning to New York City for the winter months. It was at this time that she developed her love for painting the flowers that she cultivated at Rocky Hill. She became one of the 'Ipswich Painters', a close-knit group of nine artists, all of whom lived in Ipswich, who were inspired by nature in the surrounding countryside and by the "ancient" houses and old bridges in the town. It seems likely that our painting is of such a home and garden in the town of Ipswich. Peterson studied at the Pratt Institute in New York with Arthur Wesley Dow and later at the Art Students League with Frank DuMond. In 1907 she commenced an extended tour for travel and study to Europe and North Africa, visiting London, Venice, Paris, and Madrid. In Spain she studied with and was greatly influenced by Joachin Sorolla, who introduced her to Louis Comfort Tiffany. Peterson's other artist friends included John Singer Sargent and Maurice Prendergast. Today she is best known for her paintings of the fishing villages of the Massachusetts North Shore, the canals of Venice, views of Florida, and for her 'flower portraits'. In 1938, Peterson was named the "most outstanding individual of the year" by the American Historical Society, only the second woman to be so honored. Condition: Professional restoration to a small chip in the lower left corner & to a tiny scrape in the lower foreground; professionally cleaned. « Less

"Misty Morning, Gloucester Harbor" by Emile Albert Gruppe (American, 1896-1978). Oil on canvas, 30 x 36 inches. Signed lower right: Emile A. Gruppe. Condition: excellent, all original, with no restoration or in-painting. Provenance: private collection, Toronto, Canada. Emile Gruppe was a prolific artist who is best known for his impressionistic landscape paintings, and most especially for his harbor views of Gloucester and Rockport, Massachusetts. The son of the painter Charles Gruppe (1860-1940), Emile was born in Rochester, NY on Nov. 23, 1896. Much of his childhood was spent on the coast of Holland; however, at the outbreak of World War I, his family returned to the U.S., and Emile began his formal artistic training, attending the Art Students League in New York, studying under Charles Chapman and George Bridgman. He also trained with the landscape painter George Carlson in Woodstock, NY, and with Richard Miller in Paris and Charles Hawthorne in Provincetown, MA. Emile was to develop a lasting friendship with Carlson, by whom he was greatly influenced. Emile became enamored with the fishing port of Gloucester during the mid 1920s, and thereafter spent many summers in Gloucester, eventually founding an art school in 1942, the Gruppe Summer School, in partnership with his artist contemporaries Bridgman, Carlson, Miller and Chapman. This he operated until 1970. Gruppe's style is characterized by robust brushwork, with a depth of color in his palette, and a concentration on compositional design. He became a prolific painter, creating about two hundred oils each year. Emile maintained a home in Jeffersonville, Vermont, where he painted the countryside surrounding Mount Mansfield. During his later years, he spent his winters in Sarasota, Florida, while continuing with his painting and teaching. He died in East Gloucester in 1978. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the North Shore Art Association, and the Rockport Art Association. His works are in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Hagerstown, MD; The Hickory Museum of Fine Art, Hickory, NC; Ringling Museum, Sarasota, FL and others. « Less
