Original era manufacture. Standard pattern M1840 US Army NCO sword made by Ames, inspected by G.W.C, and dated 1864. Very clean 32 inch polished steel blade with clear markings on the ricasso and a very nice dark steel patina finish. The blade runs straight and true with no nicks in the edge or corrosion issues. No scabbard. Brightly polished cast brass guard and grip with a mellow brass patina. The guard is bent slightly downwards, perhaps done so as to not dig into the side of the wearer. Bright finished blade with no real issues, just some minor age staining and a few little bends in the cutting edge. No nicks, corrosion pitting or sharpening in evidence. Original era manufacture. Classic West Point Cadet dress shako, a uniform style inspired by those worn by the US Army during the Niagra Campaign during the War of 1812. When during the battle of Chippawa in New York, British General Riall is supposed to have exclaimed as Winfield Scott's troops advanced through heavy fire while wearing militia gray, "Those are Regulars, By God!" Synthetic body and top, with a black wool covering, brass trimmed front visor, and stamped brass West Point emblem at front. Inside the crown is a period tag, reading LAING MP '68 (1968?), along with another label bearing names of men, perhaps fellow classmates. Light age and wear, removable black lambs wool pompom.
