This is a Japanese inspired sterling pattern ,attributed to Edward C. Moore, chief designer and head of Tiffany silver department. No patent for this antique silver pattern has been found in the files of the U.S. Patent Office or in the Tiffany Archives. This Tiffany sterling flatware pattern was introduced in 1872. It became inactive before 1904, the dies being destroyed due to poor condition. This antique silver pattern is unique as it does have various motifs, the one being offered is grape. Here is an exotic Tiffany sterling server,11 3/8" long,crisp design. The embossed sterling silver blade has an even satin vermeil finish. This is a multi-motif sterling silver flatware pattern with seventeen different handle decorations depicting subjects and stories from classical mythology. On this piece is seen Paris, the son of Priam, King of Troy, presenting to Venus the golden apple, he having been called upon by Juno, Minerva, and Venus to adjudge the prize of beauty to the fairest of these goddesses. On the reverse side is the goddess located where the shank meets the bowl. This sterling silver fish slice has the incuse date mark m with underlining and is placed in front of the words Tiffany & Co., indicating 1870 to 1875 or 1878. Length 12 1/2" Sharp design. Olympian is a multi-motif pattern with seventeen different handle decoration designs depicting susbject and stories from classiscal mythology. There are incuse marks on the reverse ( indented below the surface)marks stamped after the piece was finished; Tiffany & Co.,Sterling, PAT 1878 If marks are are raised that indicates only when the die was made, not when the piec e was actually made. This antique silver pattern is unique because it is Japanesque with mutiple motifs, because it has designs that extend around from the obverse to the reverse just as if the pieces were holloware rather than flatware. This antique flatware pattern is the first sterling pattern to achieve three dimensionality.It includes a number of stamped sterling flatware handle designs such as daisies, wheat, iris and grape .
