Luigi Lucioni (Italian/American, 1900-1988) original painting of Red Barns near Lake Champlain, probably Shelburne, Vermont. Signed and dated lower right 1932. Oil on More »
Luigi Lucioni (Italian/American, 1900-1988) original painting of Red Barns near Lake Champlain, probably Shelburne, Vermont. Signed and dated lower right 1932. Oil on artist board. Painting size: 9 7/8 inches x 13 7/8 inches, offered in a modern Arts and Crafts style gilded frame. Original condition, with no in-painting or restoration. This painting is one of Lucioni's early Vermont creations and is a slightly smaller version of the painting included by Stuart Embury in his book, "The Art and Life of Luigi Lucioni" (2006), as illustration 32.1, "Barns Near The Lake", from the collection of Dunbar W. Bostwick. Dunbar Bostwick was the son-in-law of Electra Havemeyer Webb. It is generally agreed that Electra Havemeyer Webb, the creator and founder of Vermont's famous Shelburne Museum, first introduced Lucioni to Vermont, when she commissioned a painting by him for her daughter's wedding and invited Lucioni to spend the summer of 1930 at her estate in Shelburne. Electra became Lucioni's greatest patron, and it seems probable that this painting was also commissioned by Electra for her daughter and son-in-law and that it depicts the Bostwick barns. Lake Champlain and the mountains of the Adirondacks are visible in the background on the left of the painting. « Less

Samuel Lancaster Gerry (American, 1813-1891) oil on canvas. Second half of 19th century. Size: 9.75 inches x 15.75 inches. A Hudson River School autumnal landscape painting More »
Samuel Lancaster Gerry (American, 1813-1891) oil on canvas. Second half of 19th century. Size: 9.75 inches x 15.75 inches. A Hudson River School autumnal landscape painting by Samuel L. Gerry, who was also a prominent member of the White Mountain School. Gerry was born in Boston and was largely self-taught, though his work shows the influence of Hudson River School artists, such as Asher B. Durand and Thomas Cole. He established a studio in Boston in 1840, after returning from several years of travel in Europe. He made frequent painting excursions to New Hampshire during the 1840s and is known for his portrait, genre, landscape and animal subjects. He exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum and was a founder of the Boston Art Club, where he later served as president in 1858. He produced views of Boston and many New Hampshire landscapes. He died in Boston in 1891. Condition: The painting has been professionally cleaned and exhibits some minor in-painting and visible craquelure. Offered in its original gilt wood frame, which retains a partial label affixed to the verso that is difficult to decipher, but which gives his address at the Studio Building in Boston, where he had a studio from the 1860s to the 1880s, together with the original sales price of One Hundred Dollars. There is also a more modern white sticker marked MFA 776 (which might reference a past exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston). The painting is signed with a conjoined monogram in the lower right corner. « Less
