The Winner, Aquatint lithograph, singed in pencil by California , "Laguna Beach" Artist Lupe Chown, (1918-2002), and is dated 84. A limited edition art of 90/100 noted, depicts Miriam sail boat, The Winner. in 1" period black frame, blue textile mat, under glass. excellent condition, aged frame. 28" h. x 33" w. Artist known for her Aquatints arts. Lupe Chown native of New York Studied as art student League of New York , American Academy Florence, Italy, Paris , Rome Otis Art Institute and The Pasadena Art Institute. Awarded gold medal at the National Salon De Blase Arte in Rio De Janiro. While she enjoyed the large audience for her painting, she turned her attention to the print making. Acquaint is a very appropriate medium for her salt rustic images. The etchings are Hand Worked by the artist from the initial plate work to the final inking. Her etching clearly demonstrate her ability and knowledge of the subjects she has spent her life studying. She has now the delight of Collector's everywhere.   « Less

6,5 x 9,25 First, a definition of terms: a maquette is the original design from which a poster is made. It is a one-of-a-kind piece by definition - it is the original artwork for a poster. So, while a poster is wonderful (and I sell many) a maquette, to me, is even better because it is the idea and design behind the poster.Cinzano : According to Wikipedia - Cinzano vermouths date back to 1757 and the Turin herbal shop of two brothers, Giovanni Giacomo and Carlo Stefano Cinzano, who created a new "vermouth rosso" (red vermouth) using "aromatic plants from the Italian Alps in a [still-secret] recipe combining 35 ingredients (including marjoram, thyme and [a species of Achillea called] musk yarrow)". What became known as the "vermouth of Turin" proved popular with the bourgeoisie of Turin and, later, Casanova.This small maquette for Cinzano appears to have been produced in the 1930s for the Turin based company (you can kind of decipher Turino as the last word on the bottom of the bottle.) I am a fanatic for old paper - I love design and I like to see how things are produced from the inception of an idea ... I suppose that is why maquettes appeal to me so much and why, when I found them, I bought so many vintage maquettes in Milan this summer.This maquette measures roughly 6.5 x 9.25 inches - it seems to have been executed in watercolor on arches paper. It has been archived since it was produced and show no aging, no foxing, no tearing and no wear.It is perfect! #1010   « Less

27 x 41 The first known CPR poster was printed in 1883. Since then, thousands of brochures, posters, menus, advertisements and other items have been created to promote travel, immigration and settlement, war efforts, freight traffic and other services provided by the company. In early years, CPR sponsored artists - both well-known and emerging talent - by providing railway passes to take them to scenic locations along the line, and CPR had the option to purchase works produced from these trips. In later years, CPR commissioned artists and even employed full-time graphic artists in the company's studio in Montreal. This photo montage poster advertises the international nature of CP cruises to exotic locales. The limited color palette is used to its best advantage and creates an interesting use of perspective. #1014   « Less

24 x 34 Yes, yes - anything with a horse inevitably catches my eye. It is true. Add in Art Deco (1925c) and a costume and I'm hooked. But tell me that this poster isn't - creatively speaking - to die for? Try as I might I still can't make out what it is for (the typography, while beauteous is absolutely illegible - at least to me), but I love it. I can read Vin in the top left so I am guessing (in a kind of educated way I suppose) that this is a menu sheet or an 'appearing now' kind of sheet where the bottom was filled in depending on the week or the menu... what i particularly like about this piece is that with very few colors the anonymous artist manages to capture the essence of the horse (which really isnt that easy), as well as they joy of the girl whose skirt is accidentally (??) being blown up while she is raising her glass... there is a lot going on in this delightful piece and I love it. #1030   « Less

30,5 x 46 ÊThis poster, printed by the Wetterwald Brothers in Bordeaux for the Bouille G. Marques company, describes and illustrates the values and virtues of chemical products (pesticides, etc). for agriculture. Useful against mildou (which we have to assume is ÔmildewÕ en francais) and black rot (which the nameless poster artist didnÕt even try to translate), the happy sower and the plentiful crops in the poster certainly suggest that if one uses the product it will be to their great advantage. #1034   « Less

Brangwyn, Frank 30 x 56 This is truly one of the most magnificent posters I have had in the gallery - now, or ever. Despite the fact that it is in black and white, or perhaps because it is bereft of color, it is as powerful as any poster, large or small, as any other I have seen. The message is simple, and perhaps in our tobacco intolerant times, a little dated: but put yourself back almost a hundred years when smoking was really a simple pleasure, When it was one of the few simple pleasures 'our boys at the front' could take with them. And then put aside the text altogether and look at the image: You have, in the forefront, a group of soldiers - yes, enjoying a smoke - together as only men can be (in those times, before women were in the military) and see their comradeship. See on the lower right, the young men, happily going off to war, their bayonets slung over their arms, ready - no, willing - to go off to certain death. Then look to the left, in the background at the cathedral - going up in smoke (yes, yes, I get the irony...). It is, really, quite a masterpiece. Because the poster is unsigned I initially had a hard time finding its provenance, but like all posters, it has a history and a story: it was actually produced by a very well known and quite famous British artist by the name of Frank Brangwyn. #1035   « Less

11 x 13 One of the elements of Art Deco design which differentiates it from many/any other period, is it's bold use of color and typography: few other periods manage to integrate the use of such vibrant and dynamic blocks of color and design and to integrate them into a cohesive message which actually and effectively sells a product. This small gem for the French tobacco industry has all the hallmarks of excellence: it uses type to frame itself, in various colors, fonts and type sizes; it integrates the shadow of a man and woman to indicate that the product is able to be used by both sexes, and it has a dark background (as many Art Deco posters did) in order to grab and hold the viewers attention. This piece, though small, arguably has many of the design elements which can be found in much larger poster by the well known artists of the period like Cappiello, Vincent, Dion, and others. Poster measures11 x 13 inches, is linen backed and in very good condition. (This same piece is being sold on line for almost double the price, in an unlined state...)Ê #1037   « Less

The Committee for Peace in Algeria (Comite pour la Paix en Algerie) was protesting what it called the fascism of the OAS against Algeria. Published by a printing house that called itself The War (La Guerre) in 1961, this piece measures 24 x 39, is linen backed and in very good condition. #1038   « Less
