Purchased from an estate auction, this charming and colorful hunting print is plate 12 in a series of 12 prints, published on May 19th, 1863 in London, England by Messrs. More »
Purchased from an estate auction, this charming and colorful hunting print is plate 12 in a series of 12 prints, published on May 19th, 1863 in London, England by Messrs. Fores, 41 Piccadilly. The series is an ironic look at the very British tradition of ''going to the hounds'' and/or hunting on horseback. In the series, we first see the riders searching for lost stirrups and other pieces of equipment, getting lost in the brush, asking directions from peasants, etc. Meanwhile, the poor deer is being chased through thicket and brush - this plate illustrates the ''take'' of the deer: finally, somehow, the riders managed to snag their prey and seem to be leading it in to slaughter... The image measure 9.5 x 15.5 inches, on a sheet which is roughly 11.5 x 17.5 inches. Margins show foxing but image is clear, this print has an inch long tear - not affecting image -on the far left of the title on the bottom left of the page (it will not appear when print is framed). This series is - in our opinion - hysterical, and would look great anywhere near horses or riders, or in a country home or hunting lodge. It will be shipped flat. THIS IS AN ORIGINAL, NOT A REPRODUCTION. WE ARE HAPPY TO SHIP WORLDWIDE. Please check out the other items we have for sale on this site. E-mail with any questions or requests for additional photos. Thank you for your interest. Status: For Sale Reference#: HP3 Condition: B+ Year: 1863 Country: England Height: 13 in. (33.02 cm) Width: 19 in. In the series, we first see the riders searching for lost stirrups and other pieces of equipment, getting lost in the brush, asking directions from peasants, etc. Meanwhile, the poor deer is being chased through thicket and brush - this plate illustrates the haplessness of the riders who are ''hard pressed'' to find the deer. The dogs are swimming, the horses are getting a little aggressive, and the deer is nowhere to be seen.. The image measure 9.5 x 15.5 inches, on a sheet which is roughly 11.5 x 17.5 inches. Description: Canadian Pacific Airlines/Couple Artist : Anonymous The first known CPR poster was printed in 1883. Since then, thousands of brochures, posters, menus, advertisements and other items have been created to promote travel, immigration and settlement, war efforts, freight traffic and other services provided by the company. In early years, CPR sponsored artists - both well-known and emerging talent - by providing railway passes to take them to scenic locations along the line, and CPR had the option to purchase works produced from these trips. In later years, CPR commissioned artists and even employed full-time graphic artists in the company''s studio in Montreal. This poster from the early 1960''s shows how much the perception of travel has changed: note the attentiveness of the steward, the linen napkins, the elegance of the setting - these were all selling points that CP used to its advantage in his and other posters and marketing material from the period. This poster is mentioned and listed in Marc Choko''s difinitive book on Canadian Pacific posters. $600 Poster measures 25 x 40 inches, is in excellent condition and is linen backed. PLEASE NOTE: ALL OF OUR POSTERS ARE ORIGINAL, NON REPRODUCTION, VINTAGE PIECES.We are happy to ship worldwide and will quote prices for surface, or courrier costs after completion of sale.
