Wearing layers of clothing wrapped around her in wavy folds, the Virgin holds an open scroll towards which she gestures with her right hand. Her head is tilted to the right in a posture of reverence; while the halo, stippled around the edge with a series of large circles, offers sanctity to her dignified appearance. She is surrounded by a rich background of intricate designs with traces of white and blue enamel, giving the impression of the sky and clouds peering through lush growth of vines and flowers. The scene is one of piety and humility blended with a sense of mystery. - (PF.5221) Section of an Enameled Brass Traveling Icon - PF.5221Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 5.5" (14.0cm) high x 5.25" (13.3cm) wide Collection: Russian Icons Style: Russian Orthodox Medium: Enameled Brass « Less

Dressed in delicate clothing and head cover the Virgin holds a scroll in her left hand as she looks at it with reverence. Her large halo is bordered on the outer edge by a row of embossed circles. The ornate floral patterns surrounding her, along with the areas of dark blue enamel touched by patches of white, give the impression she is standing in a garden at night, engaged in a moment of deep contemplation. She appears on this icon as a mortal woman who is pure in spirit and blessed with a saintliness that will soon transcend into eternal life. - (PF.5223)Sectionofan Enameled Brass Traveling Icon - PF.5223Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 5.25" (13.3cm) high x 4.75" (12.1cm) wide Collection: Russian Icons Style: Russian Orthodox Medium: Enameled Brass « Less

On this icon, set against a rich blue and white background, Christ offers His blessings with His right hand raised, while holding onto a book. The text reads,"And those who suffered, the needy ones who prayed to me, will achieve eternal peace." An inscription on both sides of Christ's shoulders states, "Lord Jesus Christ, Theocrator". Jesus' garments are very carefully modelled and quite elaborate, as is His very neat beard and hair. The use of a zigzag line for the halo gives the impression of vibrating energy, as if we are seeing Christ after the Resurrection, halfway between the human and divine. The intensity in His eyes emphasizes this point, and makes us feel we are in the presence of someone beyond this early realm, who is also compassionate and loving. - (PF.5224)Section of an Enameled Brass Traveling Icon - PF.5224Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 6.25" (15.9cm) high x 5.75" (14.6cm) wide Collection: Russian Icons Style: Russian Orthodox Medium: Enameled Bronze « Less

The top panel of this icon shows the Crucifixion; with the cross occupying the central space; Mary Magdalen and her attendant are at left, St. John and a Roman soldier on the right. God the Father looks down upon the scene, while at the bottom is the skull of Adam resting on the sepulchral ground of Golgotha. Following clockwise is the Annunciation, Baptism of Christ, and his entry into Jerusalemand Christ'transfiguration. This panel was part of a polyptych designed for the "Feast Days and the Exaltation of the Mother of God." Christ's "enthronement" at the right hand of God was the culmination of His spiritual struggles on earth. This mystical event is depicted on the top of this icon, showing God giving His only begotten Son His blessings. Above them hovers the dove of the Holy Spirit, thus forming the Holy Trinity at the center of which is a globe. Below, from right to left, is the presentation of the infant Jesus at the temple, his baptism by St. John the Forerunner, His entrance into Jerusalem and Christ's Transfiguration. This icon presents images of Jesus' natural and supernatural life in such a way the two separate realms merge in perfect harmony, as if to demonstrate Jesus' own dual nature, which was both spirit and flesh. Through art we can better appreciate this phenomenon, and understand how it affects the daily lives of devout Christians. - (PF.5228)Section of an Enameled Brass Traveling Icon - PF.5228Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 7" (17.8cm) high x 4" (10.2cm) wide Collection: Russian Icons Style: Russian Orthodox Medium: Enameled Brass « Less

Five important themes of the Christian faith are represented on this fine icon. On the upper portion is the exaltation of the cross by high-ranking members of the Orthodox Church; each dressed in gorgeous vestments with an architectural setting of medieval Russia in the background. From top left following clockwise--the Resurrection of Christ as he greets His disciples; His Ascension into heaven; the Dormition 'falling asleep' of the Virgin Mary and her enthronement. Each of these scenes are richly ornamented and very detailed, given perspective by various elements--arches and architraves, clouds and domes set against a beautiful blue with dramatic touches of white. Though once attached to other panels, this icon stands byitselfasapowerfulexpressionof Christianfaith, expressing what can only be revealed through art. - (PF.5229)Section of an Enameled Brass Traveling Icon - PF.5229Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 7" (17.8cm) high x 4.25" (10.8cm) wide

Enclosed within a wreath, apart even from angels, God the Father offers His blessings to His Son who joins Him in heaven. Below this mystical scene, is another metaphysical representation in the "protecting the veil of the Mother of God", known in the Russian Orthodox faith as the Pokrov veil. There is a sense of energy and movement, of heightened tension as if a miracle is about to appear. Ornate floral details around the border add a richness similar to the most beautiful Orthodox Churches. Each of the figures is given expressive treatment to emphasize their own character, helping to bring alive a remarkable scene--as God the Father watches from above. - (PF.5230)Mother of God Pokrov - PF.5230Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 7" (17.8cm) high x 4" (10.2cm) wide Collection: Russian Icons

At the center of this intriguing icon, Jesus sits enthroned offering His blessings and holding onto an open book. To His right is the Virgin Mary, at left is St. John the Baptist, both with their heads bowed in reverence. At the left of Christ's head is the Archangel Michael and on the right the Archangel Gabriel. Their wings are barely visible as they bend forward as if to hear every syllable of Christ's words. Prostrate at Jesus' feet are various Russian saints of Episcopal rank. The multicolored background, like stained glass windows, makes it seem Christ is within the real world, as if in a church, and yet removed into a supernatural realm. The feeling of worship coming from canonized mortals and angelic beings alike, gives this icon a sense of joy; with a touch of the mysteries inherent in Christianity. - (PF.5232)Christ the King - PF.5232Origin: Russia
