Country of Origin:USA Condition:Mint Year:1892 Description:1892 $20 PR65 Cameo NGC. Although not quite as rare as the Philadelphia issue from the preceding year the 1892 is a significant date within the Liberty double eagle series. The bulk of production this year was delegated to the half eagle and eagle denominations and only at the San Francisco facility was the production of double eagles pursued in earnest. A mere 93 proofs were originally produced in addition to only 4430 business strikes and the number of survivors in each category is far too small to satisfy today's ever-epanding group of gold collectors. Apparently more than half of the proof production went unsold and was melted at year's end or was eventually spent since proof double eagles did not carry a significant numismatic premium above their already significant face value until well into the twentieth century. As with all of the proof 1892 twenties we have been privileged to offer including the PCGS PR65 Deep Cameo that follows this specimen boasts appreciable contrast between the mirrored fields and the design elements. The color is a pleasing yellow-gold and the strike is eecuted with pinpoint precision. A thin veil of streaky haziness is seen over much of the reverse which may eplain why this elusive Gem Proof did not receive the Ultra Cameo designation. An important opportunity for the advanced double eagle specialist. Census: 1 in 65 0 finer (11/06).Certificate No.: NGC « Less

Country of Origin:USA Condition:Mint Year:1896 Description:1896 $20 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. A fabulous superb Gem Proof with rich golden-orange peel surfaces that radiate with deep mirror surfaces and heavily frosted devices. Only 128 Proofs minted of which this is certainly amongst the finest known. A magnificent coin from every technical grading standpoint and visually compelling as it combines sleek mirror fields with lovely "orange peel" tetured surfaces. Toned a nice warm gold and orange. The detail in the striking proves to be needle-sharp while all devices are well frosted. A great discovery in this condition, despite a reported Proof mintage for the date of 128 pieces which one would think might have led to a few more Gems in the grading service roster. It could be that a fair number of the original Proof mintage for 1896 never found buyers, since few numismatists in America in those days could afford Proof gold. The present coin will supply the needs for the specialist or Type buyer wanting an outstanding eample of this Proof date. Among Proof double eagles of this era, only a small percentage have survived in quality equaling this! Population finest known. Certification No. 3210246-008 NGC « Less

Country of Origin:USA Condition:Mint Year:1896 Description:1900 $20 PR65 Cameo NGC. With a mintage of 124 pieces, the current number of survivors is estimated to be in the range of 50 to 60 coins. Jeff Garrett and John Dannreuther write: "Although the number of coins known for this date is relatively high for a Proof Liberty Head double eagle, many are impaired or otherwise damaged. There are probably around 50 eamples known in all levels of preservation. The 1900 double eagle is seen with and without cameo devices." Based on their discussion, it can be presumed that the present piece is finer than most survivors. NGC has certified 32 proof 1900 double eagles, including 21 Cameo pieces and seven Ultra Cameo coins. The average numerical grade of all 32 submissions is PR64.6.The intricately detailed obverse and reverse design motifs have a light coat of frosty yellow luster, surrounded by fully and deeply mirrored yellow-gold fields. 2 in 65 Cameo, 1 Finer. Country of Origin:USA Condition:Mint Year:1902 Description:1902 $20 PR66 Cameo NGC. Untoned and well struck. Only 114 Proofs minted. Of the small number of Double Eagle Proofs minted in this low total mintage year (business strikes are also scarce as hen's teeth), recent approimations put the number of survivors at roughly half of the original Proof total or 55 to 60 pieces. From this esteemed group, many have little or no field-to-device contrast. This eye appealing Cameo Gem specimen, on the other hand, is comprised of deep glassy brilliant fields, with strong enough contrast to have earned the coveted "Cameo" title. Indeed, this is the Finest Certified by the service! Spectacular quality for a special set of Proof gold coins. Population 1; none finer at NGC.Certification No. 1741159-030 NGC « Less

Country of Origin:USA Condition:Mint Year:1906 Description:1906 $20 PR66 Cameo NGC. Fully brilliant and untoned. Only 94 Proofs struck. A unforgettable Gem Proof with sleek, brilliant yellow-gold surfaces and beautifully mirrored fields. An ocean of mint sparkle covers each side lending a fully original appearance. The strike is typically razor-sharp (including the stars forming an arc around Liberty), and we can point to full detail behind Liberty's ear and the central reverse devices as being eceptionally complete (Some Liberty $20 Proofs are weak in these areas.) No obvious distractions to prevent this eample from attaining possibly an even finer grade designation, other than perhaps a small mark on the cheek below the lovelock curl. With low production that rarely eceeded 100 Proofs in any one year, Proof Type 3 Liberty Double Eagles are of the maimum desirability. The impaired state of many, tied to the scarcity of corresponding business strikes in 1906, obviously enhances the attraction of this spectacular Proof 66! From an original mintage of 94, the coin presented here is one of the few genuine "cameo" Proofs available to collectors. Population 2; none finer at NGC. Certification No. 1858221-001 NGC « Less

Country of Origin:USA Condition:Mint Year:1907 Description:1907 Liberty $20 PR64 Cameo NGC. Only 78 proof double eagles were struck in 1907 the final year of the Liberty More »
Country of Origin:USA Condition:Mint Year:1907 Description:1907 Liberty $20 PR64 Cameo NGC. Only 78 proof double eagles were struck in 1907 the final year of the Liberty design. Production of business strikes continued well into the year and it wasn't until November that the 1907 Saint-Gaudens twenty made its appearance. The somewhat lower mintage of proof 1907 twenties the lowest output in fact of the 20th century can perhaps be eplained as being the result of anticipation for the debut of Saint-Gaudens design. An educated estimate based on auction appearances and population data places the number of survivors to be in the range of 45-55 pieces. Both Breen and Akers in their notations on 1907 proof twenties make a point of mentioning that of the known survivors many are impaired or somehow damaged and that 2-3 pieces are impounded in museums further reducing the number of collectible specimens. Offered here is a wonderfully preserved specimen with a veil of warm orange-gold patina over each side. Considering the era in which it was struck the deeply mirrored fields offer eceptional contrast against the rich mint frost on the devices. While essentially free from hairlining inspection with a glass identifies a solitary luster graze down Liberty's cheek a disturbance that is virtually undetectable to the naked eye. All in all one of the more appealing 1907 proof twenties we have offered. Population: 7 in 64 3 finer (12/06).Certificate No.: 655416-003 NGC « Less
