Victorian, dated 1839 1839 Silkwork Sampler by Fanny Staples. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours gold, cream, dark brown, magenta, olive green and black. Verses read ''The more we live more brief appear> Our life''s succeeding stages:> A day to childhood seems a year,> And years like passing ages> The gladsome current of our youth,> Ere passion yet disorders,> Steals ling''ring like a river smooth,> Along its grassy borders.> But as the care worn cheek grows wan,> And sorrow''s shafts fly thicker.> Ye stars that measure life to man!> Why seem your courses quicker:> When joys have lost their bloom and breath,> And life itself is vapid> Why as we reach the Falls of Death,> Feel we tide more rapid:> It may be strange-yet who would change> Time''s course to slower speeding:> When one by one our friends have gone,> And left our bosoms bleeding.> Heaven gives our years of fading strength> Indemnifying fleetness;> And those of youth a seeming length,> Proportioned to their sweetness.''. A wonderful set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, castles, flowers, potted flowering plants, fruit trees, swans, rabbits, fruit baskets, fir trees, crowns, hearts, a boy, flower basket, butterflies and birds perched in trees. Good. No holes. Patchy staining and a stain line on the left hand side. Some stitch losses to the border, verse and motifs of the top half. Some colours are slightly faded. Very slight colour run around the black verse threads. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. 18ins by 16ins wide « Less

Colours olive green, cream, green, light green, gold and dark brown. George IV, dated September 20th 1821 1821 Silkwork Sampler by Anne Guest. Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wood frame with rippled, old glass. Fixed to a wood stretcher frame with linen. Brown paper dust cover. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border along the top, with a tablet border along each side, and a floral border along the bottom. Colours dark brown, cream, red, gold, pink, copper, olive green and light blue. Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case. Verse entitled ''A Good conscience the best support under afflictions'' reads ''While some infolly''s pleasure roll> And seek the joys which hurt the soul> Be mine that silent calm repast> A peaceful conscience to the last> That tree which bears immortal fruit> Without a canker at the root> That friend who never fails the just> When other friends desert their trust> Thy hand shall smooth my rugged way> And lead me to the realms of day> To milder skies and brighter plains> Where everlasting pleasure reigns''. The sampler is finely worked in silk on silk ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours gold, green, pale green, light brown, black and copper. Signed and dated ''Mary, Ann Petty. 1811''. Single floral motif. Depicts a map of Europe with part of Asia and Africa and surrounding seas and oceans. Generally Good. No holes. A number of patchy stains and uniform age darkening of the ground. Very minor stitch loss to the border. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. Colour run around the black threads. Neatly and evenly stretched, slightly overframed along both sides. Verse entitled ''On Sensibility'' reads ''O Sensibility'' from thee doth flow> Whate''er is pure or worthy here below:> Depriv''d of thee. Alike the seasons roll.> Nor youth inspires. Nor age instructs the soul.> In vain the spring pours forth its balmy gales.> When thou art not. Its bloomy fragrance fails.> Almighty Father. The sampler is worked in wool and silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout. Embroidered zig zag border. Colours red, maroon, cream, yellow, pink, orange, light brown and olive green. Verse entitled ''Dear mother'' reads ''When thou art feeble old and gray.my healthy .dear mother> Arms shall be thy stay.and I will soothe thy pains away> And when I see the hang thy head.it will be my turn to> Watch thy bed.and tears of sweet affect not shed my mother> For god who lives a bove the skies,would look with> vengenes in his eyes.if I should ever dear despise my mother''.
