This is a wonderful antique tile with a highly modelled face of a fawn. Executed in an unglazed red brick faience clay, fingermarks are still evident on the sides showing the handmade nature. The face has a nice dark patina. The back is unmarked, but attributed to Enfield Pottery of Pennsylvania from the clay body and style. The condition is very good. It has a couple of chips and shrinkage lines in the clay. It''s a hefty and solid piece! The condition is very good. It has a small grinding flake to the base and a little roughness to the outside bottom edge of the excised area. This is a fine broacade tile from the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works founded by Henry Chapman Mercer. It is a Persian inspired flourish of a milkweed pod covered in an egobe green slip. These were made to be grouted into plaster walls and become one of the decorative elements of the house. It is unsigned as are most of the old original antique tiles made by this company.
