Antique Victorian micromosaic and brass picture frame. Made circa 1870 - 1890. Measures a little over 3 inches tall and 2 3/8inches wide. Unusually shaped with crenelated rectangular sides. The reserve for the picture is oval shaped with a twisted rope brass border. The frame is very finely set with tiny tesserae - the small size indicates that this might be an earlier piece. A special feature of this lovely little frame is the blown out cabochon cabbage roses that are raised well above the plane of the frame in 3-dimentional effect. The colours are very sensitively arranged, again showing greater care in the workmanship than usual. A variety of flowers in great profusion make this a particularly lovely and joyful frame. Condition of the frame is good, with no missing tesserae. Status: For Sale Reference#: 4123 Condition: good Year: 1880 Title: ANTIQUE VICTORIAN MICRO MOSAIC FRAME W CABBAGE ROSES « Less

Exquisite and rare double Georgian micromosaic. Made 18th - very early 19th century. 1 3/8inches long. Oval shape enclosed in a gold mount, very delicate classic Georgian More »
Exquisite and rare double Georgian micromosaic. Made 18th - very early 19th century. 1 3/8inches long. Oval shape enclosed in a gold mount, very delicate classic Georgian form. THe ground of the micromosaic is bright blue with a border of tiny tesserae in red and white. THe fine glass cut transversely, showing the pattern in cross section. One side has a fabulous scene of two ducks swimming amidst long papyrus leaves and water plants. The green-headed mother duck keeps a watchful eye out as the chick dives for something in the water. The detail and colour are rich and subtle - tremendous tonal variety and the actual placement of the glass tesserae is superb - forming patterns in themselves. The reverse is totally different in subject and tonality, but no less spectacular in artistic achievement and colourful beauty. A large basket brims with flowers of every hue and tone, from tiny, delicate blossoms to large, full-bodied blooms. Again, both colour and craftsmanship are highly superior. The detail is simply stunning: a single flower might be comprised of 8 or more different colours. THe quality of this item is without doubt of the very best and it would enhance any museum collection. The tiny glass stones indicate that the micro mosaic is extremely old - this quality of workmanship was only done during the Georgian era. Either side of this piece is fabulous in and of itself, but finding them together as part of a double, is particularly rare and special. Condition is very good. No missing tesserae. Extraordinary ivory: hp & signed animals, botanicals, jesters Exceptional gambling / games box & counters. Made of natural substances. Signed, hand-engraved and painted. More »
Extraordinary ivory: hp & signed animals, botanicals, jesters Exceptional gambling / games box & counters. Made of natural substances. Signed, hand-engraved and painted. Paris, France, 18th century. Measures a little over 3 1/4 inches long by 2 3/8inches wide. Rectangular box with hinged lid. Hinges believed to be original. Top and inside of lid and underneath bottom of lid are all handengraved and painted with an amazing assortment of human figures, animals, insects and beautiful botanicals: The top of the lid has a fruit and foliage-filled border. A pair of oval reserves on the sides each contain a figure of entertainment: one has a dancing minstrel beating time with his tambourine. The other has a Pierrot type figure. Possibly both were well-known theatrical figures. The top corners each contain an insect/butterfly while one corner shows a long-eared animal - possibly a rabbit of sorts, and the other a little prancing dog. The center of the top of the lid has an attached wheel that is moved by a brass knob. A hatch in the wheel displays the numbers, presumably for score-keeping. Underneath the base is beautifully decorated with a squirrel sitting amidst a floral and foliate display, insects hovering above. It is utterly charming as the long-nosed and long-eared critter smells the flowers. The inside bottom of the box has an attached scrolling metal reinforcement/decoration, very delicate and original to the box. The inside of the lid is beautifully painted with a botanical arrangement, depicted with great artistic ability and sensitivity. A panel at the bottom of this has a handwritten script that reads: Marixual le Jeune a Paris. Fecir. This was one of the best known makers of similar boxes in Paris of the time. WIthin, the box has a number of gambling chips. Some round, some rectangular, with canted corners and a pair of long rectangles. All are beautifully painted in the same hand as the rest of the decoration. Both sides are painted. The rectangles have numbers engraved in black in the center. While other boxes of this type can occasionally be found, this box has particularly beautiful decoration and is in very good, original condition. Antique pair of carved oak jesters / troubador musicians. Made in Italy, late 19th century. Approx 14 1/4 inches tall (37cm). Absolutely charming: One figure plays a mandolin; the other a flute. Each figure stands on a very simple, rectangular oak wood block. Wearing standard uniform of a jester or harlequin, complete with bells and buttons and lots of pleats. Collars like sunflowers. Wonderfully detailed caricature faces. The mandolin player with a huge open mouthed smile, stares into the distance; the flautist with exquisite gentle expression on his smiling face and soft eyes. Quality of carving very good. Wood has great, old patina and warm glow after more than 100 years. Condition: the mandolin has the edge of it''s handle missing; the tips of the fingers of the flautist are missing, as is the ''horn'' and bell on one side of his cap. One side of the cap of the mandolin player may be re-attached. The couple more than makes up for these signs of age by their great charm. Antique Viennese enamel novelty table vinaigrette in the form of a closed sedan chair, with an extending pencil. Made in Austria, late 19th - early 20th century. Approx 2 More »
Antique Viennese enamel novelty table vinaigrette in the form of a closed sedan chair, with an extending pencil. Made in Austria, late 19th - early 20th century. Approx 2 7/8 inches tall. Stands on 4 fat paw feet. THe bottom is enclosed in a gilt metal mount with openwork and raised swags. Curved shape of a Venetian sedan, on either side of which are gilt metal loops holding a pair of poles for slaves/servants to carry. The top has a metal mount echoing that of the bottom and engraved, slightly domed gilt metal roof. The knopf of the roof can be removed, and is in fact the end of a retractable/extending pencil. The front of the vinaigrette has a hinged door, with a gilt metal handle. It opens to a hollow space which would contain the smelling salts or cotton dipped in smellies. A vent is on the side to allow the odor to escape. All surfaces are richly enamelled with romantic, buccolic scenes, typical of Viennese enamel of this period. Minor imperfections, not visible to the naked eye are mentioned only for the sake of total accuracy. The piece is in good condition. Antique snuff box made of silver, gold, mother of pearl, genuine precious gem stones (emerald, ruby, sapphire), hand engraved and enameled and with openwork lions and crown More »
Antique snuff box made of silver, gold, mother of pearl, genuine precious gem stones (emerald, ruby, sapphire), hand engraved and enameled and with openwork lions and crown flanking a huge heart-shaped garnet. From the prestigious estate of Mrs Mary Timmins, well-known collector and authority on antiques, who lectured on the subject in the 1940''s, this was one of the pieces she used in her talk on Women in Colonial Days. Her son told me that the box is RUssian, but I found no hallmarks. Box dates to the 19th century. Box measures 2 7/7 X2 1/4 inches. Height is just under 3/4 inch. Rectangular in shape, hinged, long, narrow thumbpiece in front of lid. Every side of the box is decorated. THe bottom outside is gilt with hand engraving of flowers and foliage. The sides are bordered by slightly protruding rims, with hand enamelled decoration in red, white and blue very finely painted inbetween. The top is covered first by a layer of mother of pearl. This has gilt overlay scrollwork over it, with a vignette in the middle with a pair of lions and a crown - very Royal looking. The standing lions hold a large heart-shaped red stone between them. Above and below are blue oval sapphires and on either side are rectangular emeralds. The corners each have an oval gem with smaller oval rubies on their inside corners. The inside is clearly gold on the bottom. The top is also metal, copper in colour, and textured like a match strike. I found no identifying marks on the box. Condition is very good. Antique gilt bronze and cut crystal candelabra. Made in France, 19th century. From an extremely prestigious estate: William Nelson Camp, owner of Florida Power, vast real estate and phosphate mines and good friend of the richest of the rich and powerful. These stood on a table with a Baccarat glass and gilt bronze champagne bucket. Very likely the glass is Baccarat as well. It is well cut in a diamond shape that glitters and plays beautifully as the light catches it at different angles. Round base with tubular shaped bronze sides enclosing the glass. From this long stem 4 arms curl outwards, each with scrolling openwork decoration and fine foliate mouldings curling out from the branches. Drip pans and bobeches all with moulded patterns. In the center a long, elegant and slender central stand holds a candle higher than the rest. Even without us cleaning off the leftover wax from the last ball or dinner, the candelabra are very elegant and beautiful. Very good condition.
