Antique genuine Poniatowski intaglio carved carnelian in a new gold pendant mount. Made circa 1820''s in Europe. Carnelian is approx 1 1/8inches accross. Including the mount, measures approx 1 7/8 inches accross. Weighs 14 grams. Outstanding carved scene of mythological figures in battle. A warrior is about to stab his opponent with his spear. The latter holds a young beauty on his opposing hip. Both warriors are naked, as is the woman, except that a flying robe is held in one of her hands and the warrior on the left wears both a heavy helmet with huge plumage and decoration as well as a large oval shield. Details are quite phenomenal. Signed in Greek letters near the bottom. Prince Poniatowski (1754-1833), the nephew of the last king of Poland, amassed one of the greatest collections of all time. In particular his gem collection gained huge fame, especially the intaglios of ancient Greek and Roman mythological subjects, literary and historical figures. At his death, approximately 2600 intaglios were discovered to be in his possession and later, a huge controversy arose as to whether they were actually Classic or made by master European carvers of the day. It is generally believed that the latter holds true, but the quality of the carving is so superb that these items , (now 200 years old themselves), are highly sought after and held in the world''s most famous museums such as the Victoria and Albert in London and in Oxford. I received this email: Dear Ms Ginsberg, I have been collecting pictures of Poniatowski gems for my database in the Beazly Archive (Oxford University) for several years, and I wonder if you would give me permission to add your ebay pictures to my record. The subject of the gem is: MARS KILLING HALIRRHOTIUS WHILE CARRYING OFF ALCIPPE, the signature is Apollonides. In my database (http://www.beazley./poniatowski/) it is the reference number T239 - after Captain Tyrrell, who bought it in the Poniatowski sale in 1839 and published it as no. 239 in his catalogue. I am curious where you found it. Was it already in the States? After Tyrrell I have no collection history for this gem. Best wishes, Claudia Wagner () Status: For Sale Reference#: 4266 Condition: good Year: 1800 Title: ANTIQUE PENDANT PONIATOWSKI INTAGLIO CARVED CARNELIAN « Less

Antique, Art Nouveau, signed R. Lalique bronze WWI medal. Made in France circa 1915. Measures a little over 1 1/4 inches in length. Weighs approx 2 grams. Shaped like a Maltese Cross, with an angular ''loop'' at the top, so that the medal could be worn as a piece of jewellery. It depicts a beautifully modelled woman, her diaphenous robes revealing her body beneath it, finely sculpted arms envelope and embrace a tiny child. She seems to draw the child towards and inwards to her seated form. Detail is gorgeous as to be expected from Lalique''s art. Beneath the figural scene is a signature R. LALIQUE and embossed, capital lettering: ORPHELINAT DES ARMEES 1915. The medal was, apparrently, given to those who adopted war orphans. Condition is very good. A rare chance to own an unusual form of Rene Lalique''s jewelry. Status: For Sale Reference#: 4208 Condition: good Year: 1918 Title: ANTIQUE SIGNED R. LALIQUE BRONZE MEDAL WOMAN W CHILD « Less

Antique Louis C. Tiffany Furnaces Inc Favrile bronze and enamel tray. Made first quarter of the 20th century. 12 inches in diameter. 3/4 inch high. Weighs 1118grams (heavy, as expected from bronze). Round tray. Back and shoulders are smoothe, but the center has an ''orange peel'' texture, catching the light and almost iridising with the aged patina, while softening into darkness where age has left it''s mark on the lower portions. The outer band of the rim is also textured, wider and rougher than the orange peel and it is surrounded by a fabulous ring of enamel little raised cells - reminiscent of both cloisonne enamel and Tiffany glass tiles. There are segments with gradaded patterns of turquoise background with orange diamond shapes, alternating with rough squares in a variety of shades of glass-like enamel - from citrine through a range of greens to deep forest. The back of the tray has the TIFFANY FAVRILE scrolling mark with LOUIS C. TIFFANY FURNACES INC. 304. Good, original condition. No dings/dents. Antique Art Deco brass inlaid burl wood box, most likely used for cigars. Made in Germany, circa 1920''s. The fabulous brass inlaid box was almost certainly made by Erhard and Sohne. Measures 6 1/8 inches long; 4 1/4 inches front to back; 2 inches high. Box with brass mounts. The top is inlaid with brass in a magnificent Egyptian theme scene. Taken from the reliefs of the Pharoahs, it depicts a hunting scene on the Nile. The water is full of fish. Above it, amidst beautifully decorative papyrus, are two boats with hunters, some spearing fish, others with bows and arrows shooting at geese that flutter about in an arc. A vase of flowers / urn and female rower complete the scene. The workmanship and artistry are breathtaking. THe quality of the wood in the background is quite beautiful. There are two signatures / makers marks on the box. One is on the lid, lower right and is a pair of initials in a circle. The other is on the bottom, on the metal border. Any advise as to who these signatures could belong to will be highly appreciated. Condition is very good. No damage/loss/restoration of any sort. Please enquire about our other rare brass inlaid wood pieces. Status: For Sale Reference#: 4183 Condition: good Year: 1900 Weight: 5 Title: DECO BRASS WOOD INLAY BOX HUMIDOR EGYPTIAN REVIVAL « Less

R. Lalique glass dual centerpiece and candelabrum. ''Faisans'', (pheasants), created / designed 1942. No. 2125bis in Marcilhac. Measurements: 5 1/2 inches high; 12 1/4 inches accross neighbouring ends, 15 7/8 inches (40.2cm) accross diagonal side. Weighs ...lbs. Made of clear and tinted sepia glass with brass metal inserts for the candlesticks. Very solid and the design echoes and reinforces the sturdy aspect of the design, with the clear glass giving the opposite, ephemeral effect. Alternating with backwards arching bands that support the candlesticks, are 4 quarters of a circular band, each moulded with a spectacular pheasant - birds that were clearly a favourate of Rene Lalique''s. The modelling is in very high relief with fabulous detail combining realism with abstract design. Very pleasing to the eye. The birds are further enhanced with a pinkish - brown patina. Engraved signature R. Laliqe France. Very good condition, with no chips/cracks/damage/restoration. Guarranteed original R. Lalique. Antique glass and enamel plate by Rene Lalique. ''Chasse, Chiens'' - dog chase, designed France in 1914. Measures slightly under 8-1/2 inches (21.6 cm) diameter. Made of More »
Antique glass and enamel plate by Rene Lalique. ''Chasse, Chiens'' - dog chase, designed France in 1914. Measures slightly under 8-1/2 inches (21.6 cm) diameter. Made of clear glass with tan / sepia tones and pearly iridescence in the carved out sections. The border of the dish is decorated with an intaglio ring of pheasants and foliage. Elongated birds in pairs, long necks stretched out and bending towards each other, alternating with branches overlaid on each other. Almost the entire surface of the bowl of the plate is covered in a rounded triangle of foliage, each section featuring a pair of hounds. The bodies of the dogs are fantastically modelled and the glass is pearly iridescent, adding a shimmer to their short coats. They are surrounded by detailed foliage, overlapping in a style typical of the Arts and Crafts Tradition. The center of the design consists of negative space, cleverly forming a Fleur de Lis. Fabulous detail to the dogs and leaves. The design works on both a figurative and abstract level. Interest is added by the strong contrast between the textured coloured sections, the clear glass and the iridescence. There is an engraved R. LALIQUE signature. Condition: no chips/cracks/damage. Minor surface wear, commensurate with age. This plate is #3001 in Marcilhac and guarranteed to be genuine R. Lalique. Marcilhac informs us that this glass and enamel plate (assiette) appear in the catalogues of 1928, 1932 and 1937 and was discontinued after 1947.I had this fascinating email and would very much like to thank the sender for sharing the information with me as well as for the kind words: ...Your plate is indeed region 1914 but the R was added later. The script LALIQUE signature with an R was introduced in 1919 before that date the signature was used without an R and also in case of poor legibility of a moulded signature with an R. The R on your plate was absolutely added later by someone who didn,t know this. Still your plate is unique and absolutely region 1914 but not because of this added R. Regards, B. Stage / costume design for the Toyseller in the Nutcracker Ballet. ARtist signed by Jose Varona and personally dedicated to the late Beverly Sills. Comes from the estate of the late Beverly Sills, famous opera singer and society beneficiary. Measurements: 13 X 15 1/2 inches including the frame. 11 3/4 X 14 1/4 inches excluding the frame. Fabulous imagination depicting a wildly clad, red-haired toyseller in classic patched coat, checkered trousers, red-heeled shoes. He holds out a plate with coins in one hand, another raises his top hat, from which a nasty looking pirate glares. On his back is a large basket full of toys of every description and at his side is a barrow with swan handles and duck headed bars, gilded wheels, lion masks, dog heads and a group of Empire clad soldiers and their ladies walzing away. A fabulous depiction both in concept and execution. The painting, done in watercolour/guache is pencil signed, named and dated, lower left: Jose Varona ''The Toy Seller'' - The Nutcracker - San Francisco Ballet 1986. Lower right the artist dedicated this work to the late Beverly Sills: To Beverly, with love, for the music and the magic, in remembrance Jose Oct. 98. Very poignant. The painting is framed in a simple gold frame, protected under glass and is in very good condition.
