Antique Pearlware
Mocha Quart Mug
Blue Banded with Black & White
Snail Trail Earthworm Pattern
Mocha decorated pottery is a type of dipped ware identified by its “wet-surface†look decorated with crawling worms (‘earthworm’), swirling cats’ eyes, sea life (‘seaweed’), rolling waves, alternating bands of color, trees and cross-hatches and purely random squiggles.
Mochware pieces were factory-made and lathe-turned. Their signature “wet surface“ look was achieved by coating pieces in a runny mixture of clay and water known as “slip,†then applying a tea made of tobacco juice, turpentine, hops, and even urine. The resulting chemical reaction formed dendritic patterns in the glaze. Other designs were painted, scratched or stamped on with fingers, brushes, or other objects, resulting in a multitude of layers and colors. Production may have begun as early as 1792.
Many people assume that mochaware is named for the palette of colors it uses: browns, creams, grays, blacks, and muted tones of blue, green, pumpkin, and yellow. Instead., it refers to the Red Sea port of Mocha (now in modern day Yemen), a city associated in England with the export of dendritic, or moss agates (Mocha stone). The stone features natural striations similar to the ware’s seaweed- and tree-like decorations.
Manufactured by potteries throughout Great Britain, France, and North America, mocha was the cheapest decorated ware available. Most British production went to export whereas France and North America manufactured for the home markets. Archaeological finds throughout the eastern United States suggest that mocha was used in taverns and homes, from lowly slave quarters to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and Poplar Forest. After the mid-19th century, British imports waned, with those potteries still making mocha concentrating on government-stamped capacity-verified measures (jugs and mugs) for use in pubs and markets. North American product was based entirely on yellow or buff-colored bodies banded in black with broad white slip bands on which the dendritic markings appeared. Some British makers used yellow-firing clay, too, but the bulk of the wares were based on white bodies, the earliest being creamware and pearlware, while later, heavier and thicker bodies resembled ironstone, known best to archaeologists simply as "whiteware".
Because it was used on a daily basis, few examples of original mochaware have survived over the years, making it a rare American collectible.
This piece is an English Pearlware Mocha Quart Mug ex-collection of William Lewan that is decorated in a blue banded with black and white snail trail earthworm pattern. It measures 6†high x 4 ½†in diameter. It has hairline cracks, but is nonetheless an extremely desirable piece.

For Sale is a nice utilitarian piece of Art Pottery made by The Hampshire Pottery Company of Keene, NH. The item is called a "Tankard" or "Stein" and it is done in Hampshire Pottery's most famous Matte Green Glaze. The Tankard stands 5 3/8" tall and is 4 3/4" wide outside handle measurement. The piece is 3 5/8" in diameter at the foot.
The Stein displays a very nice matt green glaze. It has nice even color throughout. The Style of the Tankard is very much Arts and Crafts. You have a embossed Arts and Crafts pattern at the top lip and bottom edge. The applied handle screams Arts and Crafts the whole way. The handle attaches to the body in two places gives this piece the added strength in this area that it needs. There are two scroll designs at the top and bottom of the handle. The matte green glaze rolls over the top lip into the tankard revealing its white water proofed glaze inside.
The Stein is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. In fact this is one of the cleanest Steins I have ever owned. It appears to have never been used and spent most of its life in a Cabinet. The piece is signed on the bottom with the Impressed "JST & CO. KEENE, NH." and "HAMPSHIRE" block letters mark. There is also the mold number "37" done in raised relief as well as the letter M in a circle. Hampshire Pottery with the M in a circle Mark was used from 1904-1914 during Cadmon Robertson's tenure. This mark was used to honor his wife "Emoretta". She was the Sister of the Founder of Hampshire Pottery, James Scollay Taft. This is the first time that I have had all the marks Hampshire Pottery used to mark their wares. You usually don't see the JST mark with the M in a circle mark at the same time.
Hampshire started producing Matte Glazes in 1891. This was 7 years earlier than their main Competitor Grueby Faience of Boston, Mass. Hampshire Pottery resembles the style of Grueby but were much more affordable as they were mold made pieces as opposed to hand thrown. This the nickname "Poor Mans Grueby" was given to this line by the Grueby Pottery collectors. The pottery closed after Cadmon Robertson's death and reopened again in 1916. They produced Art Pottery until 1917 and then they focused on Dinnerware for Hotels and Restaurants along with Souvenirs until 1923 when Hampshire Pottery Closed permanently.
This will make a wonderful addition to any matte Pottery collection of Art Pottery and would look great on that Stickley Mission Arts and Crafts Bookcase. « Less

For Sale is a wonderful piece of pottery made by Bennington Pottery of Bennington, VT. I have a "Toby Mug" or "Pitcher-Creamer". The Mug is a nice cabinet size as it stands 6 1/8" tall and is approximately 4 5/8" outside handle measurement. The rim measures 3" across and 3 1/4" deep and the open gets smaller as it gets closer to the spout.
The Pitcher has a wonderful Rockingham brown glaze that is uniform throughout. The Mug depicts a Colonial Patriot holding a mug of ale in his right hand and a pipe in his left hand. He is wearing tri-cornered hat that is used as a spout or pitcher. The handle is even equipped with a thumb rest. It has an Acanthus leaf pattern on it and the leaf rolls down the handle just below the thumb rest. The bottom has what we call a "Kick Up or Concave" bottom.
The Pitcher is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The piece is unsigned but it is a well documented form from Bennington Pottery. This Mug could be used to drink ale or beer from the side spouts and as a creamer pitcher for the front spout. It has a utilitarian use.
This is a wonderful Mug, Pitcher to find in this condition. Usually there is damage to the handle or chips to the spout. I am happy to report this Mug has none. That fact that it has survived 130-170 years without any damage is amazing!! This Mug, Pitcher will work just fine in any Early American or Colonial style decor. This pitcher was made in the mid 1800's, Circa 1840-1880. « Less
