Christy, Howard Chandler
17 x 26
This wonderful and moving poster combines the work of a very well known American poster artist - Howard Chandler Christy - and the premature death of an equally prominent American humorist and social commentator, Will Rogers. Christy's Poster, produced in the year of Rogers' death (1935) includes his usual Christy girl (here shedding a tear - unusual for his women), as well as the traditional Western wear for which Rogers was known. Christy (January 10, 1873ÑMarch 3, 1952) was an American artist famous for the Christy Girl', similar to a 'Gibson Girl'. His posters which were produced during the First World War (If I Were A Man, Fight or Buy Bonds, I Want You for The Navy, were instant classics, and are now collected and guarded jealously by afficionados worldwide). Christy was born in Morgan County and attended early school in Duncan Falls, Ohio. He then studied in New York at the National Academy and the Art Students League under William Merritt Chase. He first attracted attention with his illustrations of the Spanish-American War, published in Scribner's and Harper's magazines and in Collier's Weekly, gaining especial prominence with the series, 'Men of the Army and Navy,' and a portrait of Colonel Roosevelt. He was best known, however, for his charming illustrations of the works of such authors as Richard Harding Davis and he created a picturesque and romantic type of society women peculiarly his own. His work is characterized by great facility, a dashing but not exaggerated style, and a strong sense of values. ÊThe subject of the Poster, William Penn Adair ÒWillÓ Rogers (November 4, 1879 à August 15, 1935) was a Cherokee-American cowboy, comedian, humorist, social commentator, vaudeville performer and actor. He was the father of U.S. Congressman and WWII Veteran Will Rogers, Jr. Known as Oklahoma's favorite son,[1] Rogers was born to a prominent Indian Territory family. He traveled around the world three times, made 71 movies (50 silent films and 21 'talkies'),[2] wrote more than 4,000 nationally-syndicated newspaper columns,[3] and became a world-famous figure. By the mid-1930s, Rogers was adored by the American people, and was the top-paid movie star in Hollywood at the time. Rogers died in 1935 with aviator Wiley Post, when their small airplane crashed near Barrow, Alaska Territory.. This poster is in very good condition - mounted on paper, cut close on all four sides, no margin, pinholes in four corners - but B+ overall. Measures 17 x26.

The simplicity of Art Deco never fails to grab our attention: product placement is front and center, colors are used to their fullest and the message is loud and clear. What''s not to like? Clerice Freres - Francois and Victor to be more precise - worked in France for many years (this is one of their earlier works) producing lasting images and posters for theater, liquor companies like this one (and Dubonnet among others) and almost always featuring beautiful women (hey, lovely ladies always helped to sell products...) This small gem was produced in 1911, and measures 13.5 x 17 inches is linen backed, and is in excellent condition. Other poster dealers on-line and off are selling this same piece for upwards of $750+ USD. .Please note that all of our posters are vintage, non-reproduction works of art. Thank you! For me, the best French posters of the Art Deco period (and although I can't date this poster with precision I would put it in the 1920's/1930's) are the ones which use color well, which execute the message clearly and which place the product front and center - just like this one. Kind of hard to balance a tray on your flat head, be totally red-faced AND smiling all at the same time, but somehow this devilish fellow manages it all with aplomb, don't you think? I think this piece would look great in a kitchen, dining room (either residential or commercial), bar, restaurant... the possibilities are endless! It is linen backed and in very good condition. Poster measures 30.5 x 46 inches.

According to research this Tophat Cigarettes Advertising Poster has an unusual and fascinating history. Evidently, ''In 1945 and 1946 the American forces set up a series of camps to bring their troops home after the end of World War II. The camps, most of which were located in France, were named after a brand of American cigarette, a desirable and valuable commodity (Camp Lucky Stripe, Camp Pall Mall, Camp Chesterfield, etc.). Tophat, a virtual city comprised of thousands of black 20-man tents was set up on the outskirts of Antwerp, Belgium in close proximity to its world-class harbor. Unlike the French ''cigarette camps'' it was named for the unit that built it, which had a tophat as their unit symbol. However, a Belgian cigarette company manufactured Tophat Cigarettes so it became unintentionally a ''cigarette camp'' after all. The linen backed lithograph poster by an anonymous American artist measures approximately 13'' x 22'' It is in excellent condition and is linen backed. $450.00 Please note that all of our posters are vintage, non-reproduction works of art. There is just SO much going on in this poster! Choubrac had a great deal of skill and his posters (we have a few others in the gallery) always exhibit a little goofiness, wackiness and just all-around silliness that we like and admire - just look at the facial expressions of the characters in this circus scene. And what is with the hangman who is smiling his way through the backdrop of the poster? ''Choubrac, as always, is clever enough to put the feel of the message above cluttering detail. The artists was one of the pioneers of French poster art: in 1884 when Maindron published his first article on posters, he listed only nine active posterists known to him, and included three poster artists whose work made up the first poster exhibition, held that same year in the Passage Vivienne in Paris: Alfred and leon Choubrac, and Jules Cheret. Choubrac did a variety of posters for events in the Trianon, of which this was one. Cassiers
We love the color and the humor in this poster. And, as with many posters, this one has a puzzle we can't quite figure out: the girl on the right - if you look at her for a moment or two, there is something about her that should strike you as odd... keep reading, we'll fill you in a little later. The artist who porduced this work, Henri Cassiers was a Belgian illustrator, printmaker and advertising artist. He studied to become an architect at the academies of Brussels and Sint-Joost-ten-Node. He specialized in maritime subjects as well as Flemmish and Dutch village views with their typical costumes. He was an illustrator for magazines like De Vlaamsche Patriot, Le Globe IllustrŽ, L'Illustration EuropŽenne and Le National IllustrŽ, and he also used sequential art. Cassiers illustrated books by Camille Mauclair and Cyriel Buysse and many advertisements for tourist attractions and shipping companies such as the Red Star Line. This poster was made in 1912, measures 31.5 x 47 inches, is linen backed and in excellent condition. (OK, give up? Why are her two hands different colors? No, I don't have the answer, just the question. If you have the answer, please let me know!)

LeMonnier, Henri
22,5 x 30,5
The simplicity of Art Deco never fails to grab our attention: product placement is front and center, colors are used to their fullest and the message is loud and clear. What's not to like? Henry Le Monnier produced many fine works in both posters and comics, but we like this one the best - it is clean, elegant, and kind of makes you want to reach for the nearest bottle of Cordial Medoc (which, I believe, is still made). Although Henry Le Monnier was mainly a poster artist and illustrator (for example, on Louis Desnoyers's 'Les Aventures de Robert-Robert' and Gilbert DupŽ's 'La Route d'Honolulu'), he was also active in the comics field. Born in Paris, Le Monnier studied drawing and painting at the ƒcole Pilon and at the School for Decorative Arts in this city. As a poster artist, he worked for printers like Lutecia (1923-32), Joseph Charles (1934-43) and Gaillard (1934-54). In addition, he pursued a career in illustrating. He was present in Fantasia, Le Sourire, Le Journal Amusant, L'Oeuvre and Marianne during the 1920s and 1930s. This poster is in excellent condition, measures 22.5 x 30.5 inches, and is linen backed.

Beggarstaff Brothers (Maitres De L'Affiche Series)
11,5 x 15
According to encyclopedia.com 'Beggarstaff, J. & W.' (the ÔBeggarstaff Brothers'). Pseudonym used by the brothers-in-law William Nicholson and James Pryde for their poster designs. ÔThey joined forces in 1894, and for the next five years they produced a series of posters which by their bold simplicity and clarity of design revolutionized certain aspects of poster art througout Europe É they presented the image in its starkest form; the background is stripped bare of unnecessary detail and the fullest use is made of the silhouette É Despite the brilliant originality of their work, or perhaps because of it, they received relatively few commissions and several of their designs never reached the hoardingsÕ ( Dennis Farr, English Art 1870Ã1940, 1978). Nicholson explained their choice of the name ÔBeggarstaffÕ thus: ÔPryde and I came across it one day in an old stable, on a sack of fodder. It is a good, hearty, old English name, and it appealed to us, so we adopted it immediately.Õ They signed their work ÔJ. & W. Beggarstaff'; in due course some people started referring to the ÔBeggarstaff Brothers', but the artists themselves did not care for this version.' This piece has been called one of the fore-runners of the modern poster - it is simple, it is elegant, and it has all the makings of a fine advertising print. Indeed, if it were to be presented today at an advertising meeting, there is little doubt it would be accepted for a print ad. The Maitre de l'affiche posters were a collection sent to poster aficionados and subscribers just before the turn of the last century (roughly 1896-1900). THIS IS AN ORIGINAL POSTER AND NOT A REPRODUCTION. IT IS PART OF THE COLLECTION OF THE MAITRE DE L'AFFICHE AND IS EMBOSSED WITH THE SEAL OF THE MAITRE. By the 1890s the streets of every great metropolis were enlivened by large colourful posters . The poster had not only caught the fancy of the broad public, but its best examples were already being regarded as works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reprinted in a manageable form. In the last five years of the century, the Imprimerie Chaix was to play great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient period of 'La Belle Epoque.' It was in those years that the firm published 'Les Maitres de l'Affiche' (Masters of the Poster) reduced lithographic versions, in authentic colours, of the best posters of Europe and America, by more than 90 great artists, posters that bring the period to life.'
