Wonderful and rare wood carving of Kobo Daishi, the buddhist monk who went to China to bring back to Japan the teachings of Buddha. Late Meiji Period c. 1900 with glass eyes and glass 'juzu' prayer beads. In one hand he holds the vajra and the other, prayer beads. Late Taisho Period c.1920 bronze tea ceremony gong to call the participants to the tea ceremony. The gong has a dragon handle holding the bell suspended over a lotus leaf base with a bronze chain. Farther out on the dragon handle is a hole for another chain to hold a metal gong striker. We don't have the original metal striker but a iron striker is included. The sound is quite good. The kanji on the box reads: Koka 4 Nen Teimi Shigatsu, meaning 1847 in Edo Period in the 4th month (april) of the zodiac calendar. Hirota Gensho Motomu Nari meaning the piece was commissioned for a Mr. Hirota Gensho. On one side of the Kiri box is written: Sentoku Kabin, meaning it was a flower vase fired and colored with rice straw smoke. This is a rare ink stone signed on the back, "Choshu Akamagaseki" by "Suzuki Shikan". Choshu Han was the Edo Period feudal name for what is now Shimonoseki City at the southern tip of the main island of Japan, Honshu. Akamagaseki suzuri ink stones were prized ink stones from this region, being recognized throughout the country and usualy presented as gifts between daimyo lords and the shogun.
