From what I can tell (I love Internet research!), the Floreffe was/is a kind of 1970''s fringe festival which took place in Belgium. (It appears to still take place every June). Even though there was some affiliation with the French ministry of culture, it looks to me like a pretty exotic group of performers: a drag queen wrestler (or maybe just a hairy woman in bikini bottoms), a clown with big shoes and a bigger horn, a couple of misplaced ballerinas... Posters almost always make me smile, and this one is no exception: it is full of humor, irony, and no small amount of affection. This poster was in the private collection of a noted jazz musician and producer and is only one of hundreds which we have just received. The others will be appearing in our ebay store shortly. The poster measures 17 x 24 inches, is unframed and in excellent condition. All of our posters, prints and pochoirs are authentic, vintage items. Please see our other items for sale - check back often we add things almost every day! Please e-mail any questions or requests for additional photos. We are happy to ship worldwide - please note that the price marked for international shipping is for surface shipping: if you would like air mail or courrier costs please let us know and we will provide you with those costs. Purchased in Europe, we found this piece to be a striking statement of political reality of war-time Europe. Purchased in Europe, we found this piece to be a striking statement of political reality of war-time Europe. Rough partial translation from French reads: Committee of Coordinated Resistance Movements: We have noticed that foreigners are presenting themselves in different stores and farms in the Grand La Louviere region and requisitioning items supposedly under mandates from the resistance. We invite our comrades to refuse these requisitions and to notify the central office of infractions of this nature. The only authorized requisition forms must carry the seal of the organization and the signature of the responsible boss, but also the seal of the Neighbourhood Administration and the signature of its mayor. Signed, the heads of the resistance, Chateau Ponceau, Hamoir Street, La Louviere. Signed on 16 September 1944 and printed by L. Charlier Wrey of La Louviere. This oversized poster was recently purchased in Europe. Published in Paris by Atelier Faria, it was the publicity poster for an entertainer who advertised that he ''could do everything''. What ''everything'' consisted of is unclear, but given the fact that his head is a globe and he seems to be thinking hard, we think he must have been some type of clairvoyant. The poster has some signs of wear, a few repairs, but is generally in very good condition. It was folded at one time but has been professionally mounted on linen and is ready to be framed. Measures 39 x 54 inches. Please check out our other items for sale on this site, and e-mail with any questions or requests for additional photos. Thank you for your interest. ''Attitude is everything in the several Terrot bicycle posters Tamagno created at the turn of the century. In all of them a young lady stays way ahead of the competition, effortlessly distancing an airplane, besting a locomotive coming on at full speed, or cycling breezily through mountainous terrain, be she a blonde or, as seen here, a brunette. And though she can traverse a pass one handed, this feisty female - as is always the case in a Tamagno Terrot poster - doesnt neglect to let the competition know in no uncertain - if not precisely ladylike - terms who''s the champ. Terrot bikes were successful enough during the 1890s, but the firm really came into its own with motorcycles as of 1901, remaining in business until the 1960s with one of the best makes in France.'' (Rennert) Some of the other elements to note in this particular poster are the fact that the lady is riding astride the bike - which would make it a later version of a bicycle, because previous bikes were ridden sidesaddle, like horses. (It was considered improper for women to ride with something between their legs...). Also, the woman is ahead of the man, another thing which would have been unheard of prior.... THe expression on the man''s face is quite priceless. This is the smaller version of the poster (measuring 9.5 x 18 inches, A- condition with slight tears in margins) with the dark haired woman. One of the things about posters produced during the first (and second) World War is the fact that even the most banal and basic messages took on added and poignant importance. There are a myriad of posters available in all languages which implore the populations to conserve tobacco so that the soldiers (''our boys on the front'') can have enough tobacco for their cigarettes, or cigars, or pipes... This poster falls within that category. In an upturned soldiers helmet, the message is clear ''use less so they have more''. A small, and well conserved gem. Poster is in excellent condition, mounted in linen and measures 14 x 21 inches. There is just SO much going on in this poster! Choubrac had a great deal of skill and his posters (we have a few others in the gallery) always exhibit a little goofiness, wackiness and just all- around silliness that we like and admire - just look at the facial expressions of the character in this circus scene. I don''t know who Brunin was, but I have to imagine this was some kind of traveling sideshow troupe that was popular in France and other countries in Europe at the turn of the century. The artist was one of the pioneers of French poster art: in 1884 when Maindron published his first article on posters, he listed only nine active posterists known to him, and included three poster artists whose work made up the first poster exhibition, held that same year in the Passage Vivienne in Paris: Alfred and leon Choubrac, and Jules Cheret. Choubrac did a variety of posters for events in the Trianon, of which this was one. Poster is in excellent condition, mounted in linen and measures 37 x 51 inches.
