An elegant C1770 cup and saucer decorated in the James Giles workshop. A vibrant bleu celeste ground highlighted with gilding. The cup has a fine intertwined loop handle finishing in delicate leaf terminals to the body. The colour, gilding quality and diminishing lines of gilded dots so characteristic of Giles work.
See Gerald Coke, In Search of James Giles, pl. 51(a) for a two-handled cup and saucer with the same decoration. Gerald Coke also observes that of the 26 pieces Illustrated in Rissik Marshall with the meissen mark only one cannot be assigned to Giles, the factory pieces with this mark are found to be on some Marchioness of Huntley pieces and a service painted by the 'spotted fruit painter' both of which have a green ground.
In fine condition, the cup with no wear and gilding perfect, saucer light wear to gilding to the centre. Both pieces have no chips, cracks or restoration. Typical Giles meisen style crossed swords with the number 9 between them. This mark would have been added at the Worcester factory before the blanks were delivered to Giles in London.

For sale is a very nice piece of Art Pottery made by Hampshire Pottery of Keene, NH. The item is called a "Tankard" or "Mug". The Tankard is done in the much sought after Matte Green Glaze. The Tankard is a nice size as it stands 5 1/2" tall and is 5" in diameter from the outside Handle measurement.
The Tankard has a wonderful Matt Cucumber Green Glaze. This Glaze was a trademark of Hampshire Pottery. The Tankard displays an embossed Holly Leaf and Berry pattern at the top of the Vessel. This Pattern surrounds the entire top of the Tankard. There is a wonderfully applied handle that appears to have reeded beads running vertically from the bottom to the top on each side of the Handle. The Handle has what looks like a Leaf on the flat exterior side when viewed closely. It also acts as a thumb rest when holding the Tankard.
The piece is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks chips or dings. There is some crazing in the glaze and this really adds dimension to the Cucumber Green Texture. There is also a shadow of what appears to have been a paper label that was on the bottom of the piece. The piece is signed with Block Letter "JST & CO KEENE NH." Impressed Mark. This can clearly be seen.
I believe this to be a very early mark prior to Cadmon Robertson's tenure with Hampshire. This would make this piece Circa 1891-1903. Hampshire Pottery was producing a Matt Green Glaze 7 Years ahead of Grueby. Grueby started producing matte green pottery in 1898.
This is a not so commonly found item from Hampshire Pottery in Matt Green. This is an Excellent Example in both Form and Glaze. Those of you who are decorating in the Arts and Crafts, Mission style will surely welcome this beauty. It would look just outstanding on that Stickley Bookcase.

Antique : Rare puce transferware Reform ( English & American Political History ) Mug
A very rare British / American Reform Mug in puce having Britannia alongside a lion with an American Native Indian on the ground between them also with flags, sailing ship etc... Bearing the words Union and Reform - Internally with a border with flags and flora and bearing the words - Commerce and Freedom & Unity and Liberty
Circa : early 19th century
There is a piece that has been broken and restuck crudely - no missing pieces (slight fritting where piece has been out - not bad) - a star tight line on base not all the way through and will probably come out when cleaned - I have not cleaned this item leaving it to the restorer in case the broken piece becomes unstuck (looks like animal glue), for safety.
