Federal Period Inlaid Mahogany Bowfront Chest of Drawers
New England States, c. 1810
Featuring solid mahogany planks making up the sides and top of this fine case, dovetailed into the pine secondary woods of the bottom, nailed at the top, this beautiful chest of drawers from the first quarter of the 19th Century has delightful petite proportions that make it convenient for most rooms. The bow front drawers are built up of strips of pine, covered with a flamed mahogany veneer and inlaid in an ovular shape from side to side, framing the Hepplewhite style replaced hardware and wooden keyhole escutcheons (also probably replaced). The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, somewhat rebuilt as noted in the condition statement below, and in smooth operating condition, flowing easily in and out of the case for a fully functional appeal. These are divided with a yellow pine backed and mahogany veneered bar, presumably dovetailing into the side of the case behind the veneers. A fine inlay encases the drawers and sides, with diamond form cut in satinwood and ebonized wood to bring clean lines to the case. A softly scalloped apron curves gracefully between the splayed French feet, each fully original including all blocking and interior support. The back is made up of three pine boards, each connecting to the next with tongue-and-groove joinery, nailed along the sides, entirely original.
This is an absolutely gorgeous work of Early Americana of the Federal Period, the delicate proportions being one of the most desirable aspects of this fine chest. In simply outstanding visual condition, with full strength and function in all parts, clean and well preserved, this is a wonderful compliment to any fine home. You will treasure this beautiful work of art and it will certainly become a family heirloom, passed down through the generations to come and fully enjoyed in your home.
Measurements:

Condition:
Visually Outstanding Condition
1. Finish is early, but not original; some dripping to finish, notable beneath the hardware
2. Drawers are somewhat rebuilt - blocking along the underside of bow front of drawers securing the bottom to the front is replaced on many. Runners on the drawers are replaced. Also, the drawer bottoms are somewhat curious, possibly adjusted or replaced when the runners were added and blocking - the nails at the back of the drawer bottoms are 20th century.
3. Top of chest with some finish flaws - a few scratches, a few scars and one area with some water spots
4. Oval pull hardware is replaced, locks are replaced and third drawer lock is absent. No key available.
5. Keyhole escutcheons are wooden and are probably replacements
6. Some patching to the bottom drawer and around the veneer rim
7. Some veneer loss - the bottom drawer on the left side veneer separated but retained in a small bag for later restoration. Loss of veneer to rim.
8. Minor chipping to apron and around the feet, along with minor paint marks and scuffs throughout.
9. Feet are entirely original - outstanding overall structural condition.

Chippendale 20th Century Benchmade Shell Carved Block Front Chest of Drawers over Ball and Claw Feet, after Massachusetts examples of Newport.
This is an absolutely stunning work of art with attention shown in every detail of the case. The entire case is solid mahogany, with carefully selected grains that produce a glowing fire throughout. The rim is ruled around the front and sides over a top drawer with a gallery of three carved shells over the blocked encasements below. The two outmost shells are convex, carved out of solid mahogany, each flanking the concave central shell with a keyhole in the middle. The drawer has an incredible thick facade and, uniquely, no hardware - the key is meant to act as the pull hardware, the craftsman not wanting to distract from the shell carvings by adding hardware. The three following drawers feature incredible blocking over shaped molding that flows with the outline of the chest. Each drawer is hand dovetailed at the front and back, the top drawer having a single solid board bottom, each other drawer being two board construction. The case rests over incredible hand carved ball and claw feet, each flawlessly formed with detail in every joint, muscle and stretched nail. The back two feet are carved only in the front, much in the nature of the period chests, where an absence of any mechanical device meant everything was crafted by hand - the craftsman would regularly look for ways to reduce finishing work without detracting from the overall result of the case, as our craftsman did in this chest by leaving the back of the back feet unformed.
This is one of the most precise and beautiful block front reproductions we've come across. An original block front is unattainable by all but the most affluent of collectors; this is the closest most of America will get to the real block front, with attention shown in every detail throughout. It is hand crafted and will surely be treasured in your family for many generations to come.

Top is very slightly loose, more at the front - just be careful not to lift by the top of the chest (case pieces should never be lifted by their top anyhow, but especially when there is looseness); it is still 100% stable and functional, but worth noting. Minor scratches and nicks here and there throughout, all noteworthy dings in the pictures below. Some chipping and loss to top of top drawer above keyhole. Original key, original hardware and original locks. Structurally flawless.

This is a wonderful hand crafted and carved solid walnut lowboy chest of drawers, crafted in the Philadelphia manner with a shell carved middle drawer. It features hand chiseled pierced brass Chippendale hardware, original to the piece and crafted at the time of the lowboy, this hardware sliding the hand dovetailed drawers easily in and out of the case. A tiny brass knob opens the shell carved middle drawer. The top of the chest is three boards of walnut, typical of 20th Century creations where broader pieces of walnut are exceedingly expensive and difficult to attain. The apron of the lowboy is scroll cut with wonderful flow, culminating at the midmost with an upside down shell carving. The sides of the case are single planks of solid walnut. The entire lowboy rests over soft cabriole legs terminating in highly detailed ball and claw feet.
This is a beautiful piece for anyone that has wanted a hand crafted lowboy, but do not want to pay the five-figure price tag for an original. Crafted with hours of painstaking attention to detail using entirely solid walnut primary woods, this is a fine acquisition that you will enjoy for a lifetime.
