Rare set of 4 Meiji Period c.1900 yukata kimono stencils from Ise. Each piece is 2 laminated sheets of mulberry paper treated with a persimmons tanin and aged for 2 years by smoking for strength. The stencil carver then makes his or her own tools to carve out the desired patterns which are then applied with rice resist for the desired dying. Quite exceptional murashi-do bronze hibachi in the original box signed and dated Taisho Period 11 April (c.1922). Heavy red bronze was used and when the bronze is red hot it is dipped in hot oil to achieve the mottled colorations of the metal. This exceptionally elegant antique Japanese 'rankauhari' white lacquered vanity box employs a rare white lacquer made form crushed quaill egg shells. Copies of this lacquering technique not using crushed egg shells will fade over time. This piece made in early Taisho Period c.1910 as a geisha's vanity box, still has the lovely original color and 'kagamakie' a sought after makie technique of raised gold pictures encased in fans and and circles on all sides in black and gold. All the auspicious symbols for good fortune and longevity: swallows and plum, cranes and pines, butterflies and rivers, peonies in raised gold. In the original box, this beautiful maroon lacquered antique Japanese sweets box is signed on the bottom: 'Ansei 7' or 1860. Also written is 'saru nigatsu' meaning the year of the monkey, february. Also, 'hatsu zeku' meaning the first Boy's Day celebration. It was obviously made to order to celebrate this occassion. Geometrical designs adorn in gold lacquer.
