Decorative Pair of Gilt Decorated Basalt Ware Vintage Column Lamps with hand made shaped parchment shades to accent the elegance pair of lamps, H:37" Base:6" Shade H:12" Shade D:15.5" shaped Shade top:9.5". Historically speaking Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), his grandfather and great-grandfather had been potters, and in his early 20's Joseph formed a partnership with the preeminent English potter of the day, Thomas Whieldon. Josiah Wedgwood had practiced with glazing, bodies, shapes, and colours, and in 1759 his dreams came true when two relatives leased him the Ivy House in Burslem to allow him to start his own pottery business. He had marred well and in1766 he bought Etruria, in Staffordshire, as a base for his factory. In 1782 he perfected a tool for measuring heat in kilns. On the basis of his work Wedgwood was elected to the Royal Society in 1783. He had developed durable china called the Queen's Ware, a cream-coloured, lead-glazed earthenware, "Potter to Her Majesty". Queen's Ware became an enormous success spread the name of Wedgwood across all of Europe. In 1768 Wedgwood developed a fine black porcelain called Black Basalt. With this fine-grained stoneware he was able to produce copies of the newly excavated Etruscan pottery from Italy. The new innovation proved another huge commercial success. The surface was lustrous and smooth, with a purple-black sheen. Wedgwood's factory could scarcely keep up with the demand for candlesticks, medallions, tableware, and vases in the material. Unusual to find such a decorative pair of lamps, perfect for any collection.   « Less

Circa 1900. Extremely fine American Brilliant Glass boudoir lamp. This lovely light features a deep, crisp cut design that is the mark of the best of antique brilliant cut glass. Flowers, feathers and leaves adorn the "chocolate kiss" shaped shade in a pattern that leads me to believe that this lamp is a product of the Pairpoint company. The base is flowers and leaves with "thumbprint" circles up the shaped shaft. Nicely cut crystal pendants circle the rim of the shade, finishing the lamp to perfection. Very fine condition with a deep original age patina to the metal and no damage to the glass. Rewired original single bulb socket, antique style silk cord. 17 " tall over-all x 5 1/2" base diameter, the shade is 8" at the widest and 7" tall.   « Less

Beautiful Handel reverse painted table light. This early 20th century table lamp is much more dramatic in person than in the photos. This vibrantly colored, hand painted scene is of a tropical garden blazing with brightly colored flowers and leaves, with two red bodied birds, one with a long green tail and one without, perched on leaves on either side of the shade. The handsome base is very decorative bronzed white metal, with flowers and leaves among the designs. The original finish of the base is in very good un-touched up or repainted original condition. Original three bulb socket fixture with original pull chains and Edison based sockets. The detail and quality of this light makes me believe it is from one of the prime makers and the shade is pictured on page 124 in The Handel Lamps Book, by Hibel, Hibel and Fontaine published 1999 and is described as model # 6931. The shade has two small rim chips which are not really noticeable unless you look for them, they can be seen in the last photo. There are also a couple of tiny flakes to the paint which I believe are original and not damage, just places where the artist left a tiny empty spot. Fine original patina. Re-wired. 23 " tall x 8 1/2" base diameter. Un-signed. Shade is 16" diameter x 8" high.   « Less
