Asino Velocipedista ARTIST: Anonymous In the early 1900 s circus acts and travelling shows were immensely popular in the American west and throughout Europe. This bicycle riding donkey was surely a draw when he was put on stage at the Theatre Gianduja in Torno a small town on the shores of Lake Como in Northern Italy. We think the look on this donkey s face is priceless, and even with the use of one major color (orange), this poster pops great for a child s room, den, or any room with a bit of a sense of humor. Professionally linen backed, purchased in Europe, this poster measures 37.5 x 38 inches. AUF74 - $1075. It is an original, non-reproduction piece and vintage piece of ephemera - as are all the posters, prints and ephemera which we have. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional photos. Cleaver''s Soap (circa 1910) - 58 x 79 inches HUGE AND FABULOUS! ''It''s not all that often that one comes across a soap poster deserving of a rim shot, but the clever wordplay on display in this exceptional 4-sheet design definitely qualifies. Though it''s very likely that an additional text sheet may be missing from the poster;s far bottom - a sheet which may carry the quippy narrative even further - the tragicomic visuals that appear are definitely worth one''s attention, from the sinking shooner in the distance to the shipwrecked, yet poised and spic-and-span maiden in the foreground. And what soap could deliver such pristine lovely results? Why Cleaver''s, of course.'' (Rennert) Research indicates that Cleaver''s was probably made with a plant from the madder family, called Galium apparine, which has hooked bristles on the stem and leaves, and very fine white flowers. Listen, if it saved her from being ship-wrecked, maybe it would work for you too? We LOVE this poster - it''s enormous, it''s in great A condition (there is a tiny flake off on of her knees which we have taken a picture of, but it''s teeny tiny and we did it just for the purposes of being diligent), and it''s just a little wacky... Please note that all of our posters, prints, pochoirs and ephemera are vintage, non-reproduction, period pieces.Thank you. We are happy to ship worldwide -after completion of sale we will calculate surface, air and courrier options and buyer can choose the option which suits them best. (Price listed for international shipping is for least expensive - surface - method. Quicker shipping methods will be calculated upon completed sale). It would be hard to find a more classically Deco image than this one which was purchased recently in Europe. Advertising an aperitif called Kina Lillet this poster was printed designed by a celebrated poster designer called Andre Galland (who lived in France from 1886 - 1965 and who was a celebrated designer of posters for French wines and the French National Lottery) in 1927. The poster is signed. We have had this poster lined to protect its investment value and physical integrity. We think it is an impressive and interesting tribute to Deco artistry and would make a great addition to any collection. Overall excellent (A) condition - Paper, linen backing. Poster measures 23 x 31 inches. We have shown only the top part of the poster with the image - the bottom (where the printer has left the paper blank so that the bar or restaurant where the poster would have been displayed could have been filled in with perhaps the specials of the day) has no image... Please note that all of our posters are vintage, non-reproduction works of art. Please see our other posters, prints and ephemera. We are happy to ship worldwide - costs to be determined by buyers location and choice of air, surface or courrier. ''What a playful piece of Americana. This uncredited designer obviously had a working knowledge of Mid-Western winters (the poster was printed in Eastern Ohio) and was well aware of the less-than-cheerful attitude these prolonged periods of cold can produce. So, instead of trying to sex things up or provide something explosive inspired by the product''s name, he sets down an animated snowman partaking in a bit of frosty tow- behind skiing, an activity that''s only possible because of the anti-freezing power produced by Super-Pyro. It''s lighthearted, fanciful and just the tiniest bit mischievous, qualities that will go a long way towards attracting a consumer smack-dab in the middle of an unrelentingly frigid season.'' (Rennert) Measures approx. 51 x 34 inches, with grommets at the corners, in A- condition (obvious folds) and printed on canvas. Produced by John Igelstroem in Massillon Ohio USA. We love this piece - partially because we live in Montreal and have to love winter (even if grudgingly!) - but also because it reminds us of Frosty the snowman, of kids playing tow behind with city-buses, of our never-ending winters... this piece would look great in a country house, in a city house, in a dorm, restaurant, bar... just about anywhere. We will be happy to ship it worldwide - please note that the shipping costs noted below are for surface shipping - expedited shipping is available at an additional cost. A color plate from an exquisite book called Les Programmes Illustres, by Ernest Maindron, published in 1897, by Librairie Nilsson-Per Lamm, Paris purchased at auction, and More »
A color plate from an exquisite book called Les Programmes Illustres, by Ernest Maindron, published in 1897, by Librairie Nilsson-Per Lamm, Paris purchased at auction, and filled with the most unbelievably detailed and remarkable works of art we have seen... granted we are biased and truly moved by works from this period, by truly, these are gems, in remarkable, mint condition, and more than 100 years old. The auction catalog reads: '' ''I often ask myself what they, the curious of the year 2000, will think of us, whom we are cut off from by a century of dreadful events; them, knowing that which we don''t yet know and that we nearly suspect, what will they say of our old frivolity with all that has passed? Won''t they pity us, like we today have pity for the aristocratic society whose ancient prints we refer to with carelessness and levity?'' Thus mused Pierre Veber in his prefacing comments for the Programmes Illustres, a hardcover compendium of some of the most beautiful menus, invitations, business cards and announcements of the Belle Epoque. Little could he have known how off the mark his thoughts were, as today we look back at the virtuosity these posterists displayed with the limited technology of the time.'' (Rennert) Each sheet is 9.25 x 12.5 inches, and the images on the sheet vary - this one, by Louis Oury as a cover for the Programmes Illustre is approx. 6.5 x 8.5 inches. The colors are immaculate and bright and the piece would frame up beautifully. (So well received was this cover that it was used for 5 separate issues of the magazine. Thus, we have 5 copies of the same illustration) PLEASE NOTE: ALL OF OUR POSTERS ARE ORIGINAL, NON REPRODUCTION, VINTAGE PIECES. (Rennert) Each sheet is 9.25 x 12.5 inches, and the images on the sheet vary - this one, by Roubille , measures 4 x 9.25 and was evidently a programme for the wonderfully named Theatre des Sales Gueles (very French slang for the Theater of the dirty mouths, or theatre of those who use bad words...)
