Antique Oushak / Ushak Turkish Rug, late nineteenth century The exuberance, grace, and fantasy of classical oriental carpet design come alive on this magnificent antique Oushak. Four sinuous dragons rotate about the center of the rich apricot field, while above and below them winged lions pounce on larger fantastic creatures. In the monumental ivory border more animals prance across vines and palmettes rendered in the same soft greens and apricots of the field. Antique Agra, early twentieth century - An allover compartment pattern of hexagons repeats in dynamic symmetry across the soft tan field of this charming antique Indian Agra carpet. Smaller medallions with abstract floral detail fill the compartments, but allowing considerable space, giving the entire design an open, transparent effect. A stylized latchhook vinescroll border on an ivory ground frames the whole composition, nicely picking up the ivory detail of the field. This sort of design is unusual among Agra carpets, being much more tribal and geometric in style. But the soft pastel palette of the carpet mollifies much of the graphic boldness of the patterning. An array of lavish objects or furnishings - vases, chests, flowerpots, etc. - float in life-like perspective on a soft camel ground all around an openwork central medallion with stylized flowers and a pair of dragons. Delicate vinescroll cornerpieces and dragon half-medallions appear along the edges of the field. Trompe l'oeuil meander borders enclose the whole design. At the center a golden ivory medallion with a scalloped arabesque contour sits amidst a soft terracotta field brimming with delicate flowering vines and palmettes. Hanging vases or lamps function as finials for the medallion while deep navy cornerpieces filled with vines define the oblong shape of the field. A lush, minutely detailed vinescroll makes up the border, set against a blue ground like the cornerpieces, with thin ivory, terracotta, and blue guard stripes to add contrast.
