Italian ebonized marble top cabinet with ivory inlay c1860. This cabinet has hand cut ivory inlaid all over its front and sides. The top is a single piece of black marble three quarters of an inch thick. This cabinet originally had a matching top, the black marble is a later addition. While oyster cabinets are fairly common, ones containing veneering of this quality are quite rare and highly desirable.The cabinet contains one large drawer and 16 smaller drawers concealed behind the front cabinet doors. An almost identical cabinet sold at Sothebys April 24th 2008 in the "TOM DEVENISH: THE COLLECTION - HIGHLY IMPORTANT ENGLISH FURNITURE" for $73,000Provenance: Private London CollectionAdditional Information: The William and Mary period is formally from around the time that William III and Queen Mary II ruled, which was from 1689 to 1702 in England. When William Prince of Orange in Holland accepted the invitation to the throne of England he brought with him Dutch influence which later became an important element in the design of English furniture. As such the stylistic period lasted somewhat later into 1710/1720 as it later diffused into the general English public. The style came after the Queen Anne style to which it is similar but it also adds Netherlandish taste.Traditionally, cabinets on stands were designed to contain papers or collections of curiosities. The 'oyster' veneers in this cabinet are made from olive wood which, due to its distinctive figure, was much sought after by cabinet makers in England and Northern Europe. Although not native to these regions, it is native to the Mediterranean region and was often imported for furniture veneers in the late William and Mary period of the late 17th and early 18th century.   « Less

The base is a stylized guiloche-molded base with conforming blocked feet. H:50.5" Length:8'8 3/4" D:23 3/4". There is a similar cupboard locaed in the Palazzo Davanzari in Florence, Italy, this Higly Carved Cupboard retained its original locks on the side cabinets. Such pieces as this cupboard were used for storing sacred books, relics,sacred vessels and vestments and literally used as Sacristy Cupboards which were sometimes placed in the hallway, bedrooms or other rooms in the palace. Late 17th to Early 18th Century Italian Marble Top Baroque Style Walnut Cabinet with carved corbels and freize drawer over two paneled cabinet doors, flanked by leaf carving. The cabinet rests on a pedestal base of carved dog figural legs, with paneled back and sides, of minor restoration and a replaced marble top. H:40.5" W:39 1/4" D:16.5" Though it was in Italian architecture, painting, and sculpture that the Baroque style was evolved, Italy was not the first to apply this style to furniture. But by the mid-17th century Italy was producing flamboyantly carved, painted, and gilded furniture, decorated with such typical motifs as cupids, acanthus, shells, and boldly drawn scrolls, and was further enriching chairs and stools with fine-cut velvets and table tops with marble or pietra dura (a mosaic-like technique in which coloured stones are cut and shaped and inlaid in a design). Chairs and stools with exaggerated scrolled arms and legs, and handsome walnut and ebony cabinets and cupboards with carved decoration on the pediments, friezes, and corners and sometimes inlaid with marble or pietra dura set in molded panels, typify the Italian furniture of the later Baroque phase.
