On the upper register Christ is seen seated on a decorated throne with His mother the Virgin Mary on His right, and St. John the Baptist (the "Forerunner") on His left. The bottom panel shows four busts of saints each with their arms folded over their chests. In similar enthronement scenes Christ is typically shown holding the Holy Bible while making a sign of blessing. Both the Virgin and St. John bow their heads in reverence. This simple and moving presentation is given some ornamentation at the top in the style of 11th Century Russian-Byzantine decoration. Though the faces are smooth from age and the touch of the pious, the power from this icon is much larger than its size;remindingusoftheabilityartpossessestotranscendtimeandspace.-(PF.5207)Christ the King with Saints - PF.5207Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 3.5" (8.9cm) high x 2.25" (5.7cm) wide Collection: Russian Icons Style:Russian Orthodox

Throughout his life Abraham was directed by God to perform many difficult tasks, including establishing a new land for his people, i.e. Canaan. God appeared to Abraham in the form of three angels, representing the Holy Trinity. He offers this mystical gathering bread and wine, prefiguring the Eucharist. In the background is an oak tree and buildings in the style of Medieval Russia. The use of brilliant blue and white enamel heightens the drama and adds perspective. Within this small plaque we see represented both the physical and supernatural worlds; and the 'joining' of these two spheres of existence through the direct intercession of the Divine Spirit. - (PF.5209)The Old Testament Trinity - PF.5209Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 4.5" (11.4cm) high x 3.75" (9.5cm) wide Collection: Russian Icons

The Virgin Mary is the central figure of this fascinating and lovely icon. She is seen in a holy state, blessing sinners gathered around her. Two banners above her on either side read, from left to right, "Those who lead a sinful life"... "Jesus Christ will bring you salvation." Above the Virgin is the inscription, "The image of the Mother of God." Surrounding Mary are eighteen saints and angels, the most high are at the top; from left to right, the Archangel Michael, Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ, St. John the Baptist and the Archangel Gabriel. Each of the busts is encircled by graceful foliage set against a rich blue and white background. For the faithful, and particularly those who adore the Virgin Mary, this fine icon represents the compassionate mother whose purity and holiness transcends time. - (PF.5210) The Mother of God in Heaven - PF.5210

Piety of the Orthodox Church is expressed in the upper panel showing high-ranking members of the church gathered together for the 'Exaltation of the Holy Cross'. The reason for such rejoicing is revealed below, in the upper left panel we see Jesus greeting His disciples following His Resurrection. This is followed by another miraculous vision of Christ ascending to Heaven on a cloud surrounded by radiating light as His awestruck followers watch from below. The Dormition or 'falling asleep' of the Virgin Mary is next, representing the transition between earthly death and spiritual afterlife. Then comes the charming 'Hospitality of Abraham' when God appeared in the form of three angels and the kindly Abraham offered them food and drink. Such scenes gave inspiration to the faithful who carried such icons on their travels. - (PF.5211)Section of an Enameled Brass Traveling Icon - PF.5211Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 6.75" (17.1cm) high x 4.24" (10.8cm) wide Collection: Russian Icons Style: Russian Orthodox Medium: Enameled Brass « Less

Under the curved "roof" of this icon sits Christ enthroned, representing Him after the crucifixion in His divine form as both judge and savior of the world. Scenes from His life begin at upper left with His birth or Nativity, followed by His baptism, entry into Jerusalem and the Ascension. Touches of blue and white enamel give perspective and make the complex events of each scene seem more immediate. These themes were chosen to give the pious an instantaneous overview of Jesus’ life--from birth to death, from flesh to spirit--as the viewer journeys through the "windows" of the Christian religion. - (PF.5212)Section of a Brass Traveling Icon - PF.5212Origin:Russia Circa:1750ADto1900ADDimensions:17.6"44.7cm)highx11(27.9cm)wide Collection: Russian Icons Style:Russian Orthodox Medium:Brass Section of a Brass Traveling Icon - PF.5212Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 17.6" (44.7cm) high x 11"(27.9cm)wide Collection:Russian Icons Style:Russian Orthodox

The uppermost panel of this icon depicts the 'Exaltation of the Holy Cross' by a venerable gathering of members of the Orthodox Church, each wearing beautiful vestments. In the upper left panel Christ greets His disciples following the resurrection. This is naturally followed by His ascension as He lifts upwards on a cloud, while His disciples watch from below. Then comes the 'Dormition' of the Virgin Mary, seen at the moment of death before her soul rises to heaven. The final panel shows the 'Hospitality of Abraham' when God appeared to him in the form of three angels, (the Holy Trinity), and he offered his guests food and drink. Such scenes of spiritual events were made more 'real' and more personal through their depiction in dramatic form on icons, bringing the viewer even closer to the faith. - (PF.5213)Section of a Brass Traveling Icon - PF.5213Origin:Russia Circa:1750ADto1900ADDimensions: 6" (15.2cm) high x 3.75" (9.5cm) wide Collection: Russian Icons Style: Russian Orthodox

Five distinct panels comprise this traveling icon. The upper portion, under the curved 'dome' like the spire of an orthodox church, is the scene of Jesus’ Crucifixion, showing the three Maries praying at the base of the cross. From upper left clockwise is the Annunciation, followed by the Nativity, Jesus presented to the Temple, and the Virgin and Child before God enthroned. Such scenes are essential elements of Christian faith beginning with the announcement of the Immaculate Conception and ending with Jesus’ death. Hence, at a glance the worshiper can experience the miracle of the Divine spirit in man and man transformed from flesh to Divine Spirit.-(PF.5216)Section of a Brass Traveling Icon - PF.5216Origin:Russia Circa:1750ADto1900ADDimensions: 5.5" (14.0cm) high x 3.25" (8.3cm)wide Collection:Russian Icons Style:Russian Orthodox

Four scenes are depicted on this icon representing the crucial stages of Jesus's life, from His birth as a mortal man to His rising to heaven as a divine being. From upper left is the nativity, followed by His baptism, entry into Jerusalem and the ascension. Each panel treats the various scenes in graphic and realistic manner, whether they are representing a human event or a mystical phenomenon. The dark blue enamel with touches of white give the impression of a night sky of cumulus clouds, as backdrop to a series of dramatic events that have no parallel. - (PF.5217)Section of an Enameled Brass Traveling Icon - PF.5217Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 AD

Set within an ornate floral border of grapes and vines is the Virgin Mary tilting her head towards the infant Jesus, who is depicted as a standing child. The Virgin's nimbus reaches at top to the inner border, and also stretches behind the Child who has His own halo. Their clothing is depicted as basically simple, as befitting the Holy Family; but with touches of decoration, such as the border of connecting circles around the Madonna's collar. Maternal love is clearly evident on this icon, as is the more mysterious love of two divine beings. - (PF.5218)The Mother of God of Kazan - PF.5218
