Wonderful RARE set of 2 matching English Wrought Iron Wall Sconces on original wooden backs. These sconces were originally hanging in a 19th century English Pub until recently. The oak wooden backs and the sconces have been beautifully restored and are ready to hang. They have a solid brass finial on the bottom of them as an added decoration. They originally would have had clear glass oil fonts in the circular part of the sconce. These can be ordered to fit, if the customer requires (at their cost) and they could also be wired for electricity if need be. They are extremely decorative and would also look great with plants in the circular section in a Victorian Conservatory or on a wrap around porch. Antique glass and enamel plate by Rene Lalique. ''Chasse, Chiens'' - dog chase, designed France in 1914. Measures slightly under 8-1/2 inches (21.6 cm) diameter. Made of clear glass with tan / sepia tones and pearly iridescence in the carved out sections. The border of the dish is decorated with an intaglio ring of pheasants and foliage. Elongated birds in pairs, long necks stretched out and bending towards each other, alternating with branches overlaid on each other. Almost the entire surface of the bowl of the plate is covered in a rounded triangle of foliage, each section featuring a pair of hounds. The bodies of the dogs are fantastically modelled and the glass is pearly iridescent, adding a shimmer to their short coats. They are surrounded by detailed foliage, overlapping in a style typical of the Arts and Crafts Tradition. The center of the design consists of negative space, cleverly forming a Fleur de Lis. Fabulous detail to the dogs and leaves. The design works on both a figurative and abstract level. Interest is added by the strong contrast between the textured coloured sections, the clear glass and the iridescence. There is an engraved R. LALIQUE signature. Condition: no chips/cracks/damage. Minor surface wear, commensurate with age. This plate is #3001 in Marcilhac and guarranteed to be genuine R. Lalique. Marcilhac informs us that this glass and enamel plate (assiette) appear in the catalogues of 1928, 1932 and 1937 and was discontinued after 1947.I had this fascinating email and would very much like to thank the sender for sharing the information with me as well as for the kind words: ...Your plate is indeed region 1914 but the R was added later. The script LALIQUE signature with an R was introduced in 1919 before that date the signature was used without an R and also in case of poor legibility of a moulded signature with an R. The R on your plate was absolutely added later by someone who didn,t know this. Still your plate is unique and absolutely region 1914 but not because of this added R. Regards, B. Stage / costume design for the Toyseller in the Nutcracker Ballet. ARtist signed by Jose Varona and personally dedicated to the late Beverly Sills. Comes from the estate of the late Beverly Sills, famous opera singer and society beneficiary. Measurements: 13 X 15 1/2 inches including the frame. 11 3/4 X 14 1/4 inches excluding the frame. Fabulous imagination depicting a wildly clad, red-haired toyseller in classic patched coat, checkered trousers, red-heeled shoes. He holds out a plate with coins in one hand, another raises his top hat, from which a nasty looking pirate glares. On his back is a large basket full of toys of every description and at his side is a barrow with swan handles and duck headed bars, gilded wheels, lion masks, dog heads and a group of Empire clad soldiers and their ladies walzing away. A fabulous depiction both in concept and execution. The painting, done in watercolour/guache is pencil signed, named and dated, lower left: Jose Varona ''The Toy Seller'' - The Nutcracker - San Francisco Ballet 1986. Lower right the artist dedicated this work to the late Beverly Sills: To Beverly, with love, for the music and the magic, in remembrance Jose Oct. 98. Very poignant. Antique jeweled gilt picture / photograph frame. Made in the Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia at that time) circa 1920''s. Measures 6.5 X 4.5 inches. Rectangular shape. Easel style but with loops on the back so that it can be hung either horizontally or vertically. Gilt frame with moulded pattern of scrolling foliage on the sides. Each corner is embellished with openwork gilt metal set with paste rubies and emeralds (immitation gem stones made of glass). Paste is of a lovely quality and well set. Very lovely and useful item to add a touch of quiet class to any room and perfect for holding the picture of your loved ones. Very good, original condition with no dings/dents or losses to stones. Exquisite and rare double Georgian micromosaic. Made 18th - very early 19th century. 1 3/8inches long. Oval shape enclosed in a gold mount, very delicate classic Georgian form. THe ground of the micromosaic is bright blue with a border of tiny tesserae in red and white. THe fine glass cut transversely, showing the pattern in cross section. One side has a fabulous scene of two ducks swimming amidst long papyrus leaves and water plants. The green-headed mother duck keeps a watchful eye out as the chick dives for something in the water. The detail and colour are rich and subtle - tremendous tonal variety and the actual placement of the glass tesserae is superb - forming patterns in themselves. The reverse is totally different in subject and tonality, but no less spectacular in artistic achievement and colourful beauty. A large basket brims with flowers of every hue and tone, from tiny, delicate blossoms to large, full-bodied blooms. Again, both colour and craftsmanship are highly superior. The detail is simply stunning: a single flower might be comprised of 8 or more different colours. THe quality of this item is without doubt of the very best and it would enhance any museum collection. The tiny glass stones indicate that the micro mosaic is extremely old - this quality of workmanship was only done during the Georgian era. Either side of this piece is fabulous in and of itself, but finding them together as part of a double, is particularly rare and special. Condition is very good. No missing tesserae.
