This is a lovely vintage unsigned oil painting of the Northern California craggy coastline near Point Lobos. The painting is in the style of an earlier Guy Rose painting of the same location. The canvas has been laid down on board and needs a good restoration. It is soiled, has craquelure and spots of missing paint. Beyond all of that it is a lovely small painting, just right for any area of display.The frame is original to the painting. The mat is a lovely moire taffeta in a creamy ivory color, accented with a gold fillet. The frame is a narrow gilt wood molding with an intricate wave pattern design that sets off the water in the painting nicely. Professionally mounted and sealed with paper on the back to protect from the elements. Actual art dimensions: 8 inches x 11.25 inches. Distortion of the frame on the full size picture is from the camera, this frame is rectangular. Antique / vintage oil painting depicting Venice and the sea with ships and boats in front of architecturally Classical buildings. The painting is signed by the artist, but there is some paint loss exactly over the signature (and nowhere else). Measures approx 10 1/4 X 6 1/4 inches. Very fine painting by superior artist. Done on metal. Wonderful detail - from the minute people who populate the town to those working on the boats and sailing ships. A variety of Mediterranean trees add colour to the town, almost bleached white and red in the sun. Fabulous treatment of the sky. Light blues of sky and sea make this a particularly attractive painting. Painting is signed, but we cannot read the signature. Besides the loss of paint over the signature, the painting is in very good condition with no damage / losses / restoration. Painting of a number of sailing ships, looking very fierce, if bedraggled, at day''s end. Huge clouds in a darkening sky. One of the ships appears to be on fire. Men in a row boat,highlighted in red by the sun''s dieing rays, row away from it. The top of the mast of a sunken ship appears in the foreground. Choppy seas. painted on copper, which is very slightly buckled. Signed lower left James Webb. Probably can do with a good cleaning.
