William IV, dated 1834 1834 Sampler by Ann Wright. Framed in an old maple frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in wool and silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours greens, blues, yellow, gold, browns and cream. Verse entitled ''Love to God and Man'' reads ''Let gratitude in acts of goodness flow; Our love to God; in love to man below.> Be this our joy - to calm the troubled breast,> Support the weak, and succour the distrest;> Direct the wand''rer, dry the widow''s tear;> The orphan guard; the sinking spirits cheer.> Tho'' small our pow''r to act, tho'' mean our skill,> God sees the heart, he judges by the will.''. Signed and dated ''Ann Wright. Aged 13 July 15 1834''. Single farmyard motif with a house, windmill, trees and a couple fishing in a pond. Good. A few holes. No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Victorian, dated 1857 1857 Silkwork Sampler by Helen Bowen. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering strawberry border. Colours navy blue, cream, black, pink, green, turquoise and gold. Verse reads ''And Canst thou Parents for a moment think . that> we thy children when old age shall shed. Its blanching> honours on thy weary heads . Could from our> best of duties ever shrink . Sooner the sun from his> bright sphere shall sink . Than we ungrateful leave y> life(?) in that day . To pine in solitude your lifes awa y''. Signed and dated ''Helen Bowen Her work Aged 12 Years 1857''. A good set of motifs, including angels, a lady with a baby, fir trees, butterflies, dogs, fruit baskets, birds, potted flowering plants, squirrels, hearts, peacocks, a lady and a gentleman and a house with a garden. Generally good. A number of holes. No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground. Some stitch losses to the top line of the verse. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. Colour run around the dark green threads. Stretching is very slightly uneven. The sampler is worked in fine silk on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, cream, yellow, pale blue, light brown, dark brown, white, black, red and pink. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-21. Verse reads ''Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand> As the first efforts of an infents hand> And while her fingers on the canvas move> Engage her tender heart to seek thy love> With thy dear children let her have her part> And write her name thyself upon her heart''. Inscriptions read ''Be ever faithful> To your Friend> Honours the road> To gain your end''. ''Follow the Lamb> Wheresoever he go> and you shall gain> the crown of glory''. Stitched to linen and loose mounted onto card with brown paper dust cover. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours olive green, cream, pale blue, copper, black, pink, light green, orange and red. Alphabet A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-4. Verse reads ''Within thy circling power I stand> On every side I find thy hand> Awake Asleep at home Abroad> I am surrounded still with God.> Omay these thoughts possess my brest> Where.er I rove where.er I rest.> Nor let my weakest passions dare> Consent to sin for God is there''. Signed and dated ''Mary the daughter of James and Jane Mccallester Wrought this in the tenth Year of her Age Whitehaven 1824''. Whitehaven is a town in Cumbria, England. A good set of motifs, including two houses, one flanked by trees, potted flowering plants, butterflies, a cow, beehive, figures on the lawn and sailing ships. Generally Good. Two holes and some old tack holes around the edge. Patchy staining and some darker stains and specks. Some stitch loss to the verse, signature and divider lines. Verse reads ''One way let all thy thoughts and actions tend> Reason their constant guide and truth their end> And ever mindful of thy mortal state> How quick how various are the turns of fate> How here how there the tide of fortune roll> How soon impending death concludes the whole> Compose thy mind and free from anxious strife> Endure thy portion of the ills of life.''
