Here we have a Silver Verge & Fusee Pair Case Pocket Watch made personally in the early years of his career by the Famed English James Markwick, Jr. of London (c.1695-1715) More »
Here we have a Silver Verge & Fusee Pair Case Pocket Watch made personally in the early years of his career by the Famed English James Markwick, Jr. of London (c.1695-1715) Late 17th/Early 18th Century. James Markwick Jr learned the art of clock making from his father, the also quite famed 17th Century clockmaker James Markwick who apprenticed under Edmund Gilpin of the Clockmakers Company, and after marrying Gilpin's only daughter, was freed from the Company in 1666. James Sr quickly rose through the ranks, with the help of his father-in-law, and became one of the wealthiest private clockmakers in London, moving so far ahead in only one generation as to have gone from a runaway-apprentice clockmaker of no means to being given the rent of an Estate by the Crown in 1704 and thereby became a member of the English Gentry, an enormous leap in standing for a man, who became a Gentleman, in the 1660s-90s. In 1692 James Jr, being the second but oldest surviving son of James Sr under whom he had apprenticed, was freed from his own apprenticeship and a few years later around 1696 James Junior was given his father's prosperous shop and trade, quickly making a name of his own in the watchmaking world during the turn of the 18th Century, making some of the finest watches in Europe and far beyond (as many of his watches would be made for the Ottoman Market). James Jr worked in this manner for nearly twenty years until forming a new company with his son-in-law Robert Markham, forming the incomparable and still treasured MARKWICK MARKHAM Watchmaking Company, with which James Jr worked until his death around 1729. Markwick had become such an incredibly respected famed and honored watch maker that even after his death when Robert formed a new alliance, the company became MARKWICK, MARKHAM & PERIGAL, not daring sever their company's connection with the name known round the world, and of course keeping the honor of Robert father-in-law James Jr alive. Robert Markham passed in 1741 and his kin and new partners switched the third name several times, but so great was the skill and memory of James Markwick Jr that his name stayed the first name on the Ledger through a half dozen changes of ownership over the next hundred years.
This is a truly ONE OF A KIND piece made and twice inscribed by James Markwick Jr himself, before Markham came along, and while James was working tirelessly in his father's London shoppe to create the most beautiful watches available. Here we have a Markwick silver key wind pair case pocket watch. Gilt full plate verge & fusée movement, pierced and engraved balance cock, silver regulation, hybrid pillars, silver champlevé dial with black Roman numerals, black outer minute track with outer black Arabic five minute markers, beetle and poker hands, polished inner and outer cases, dial and movement both signed. A truly STUNNING piece. Key still winds but the movement needs a tune up to run smoothly and properly, but everything is there and original. 58mm.
Provenance: Previously Sold via the Exclusive 'Watches & Wristwatches' Sale at Bonhams London.

A traditional style of Han Dynasty, specifically ethnic Sichuan or Szechuan, Chinese Reddish-Orange Terracotta Pottery Dancing Figures, often found in Sichuan tombs dating to China's extremely historically important Han Dynasty- dating from 220 BCE to 206 CE (AD) the Han Dynasty, in the case of the Chinese Culture, is the bridge between the Ancient/Archaic Era and the Modern Imperial Chinese Period, which continued until the Early 20th Century when "Imperial China" ended with the Revolution which seized power from the then ruling Qing Dynasty. No damage or repairs are visible on either piece. Mineral deposits and wear typical of terracotta sculpture of this age are present. The woman and man are shown mid-dance, both with their right arms raised, as is typical of this style of Dancing Figure sculpture, with the woman wearing a tripartite floral headdress and the curved headdress of a Han Dynasty Gentleman on the male figure; both wearing floor-length robes. A Beautiful and Very Large example of Han Dynasty Sichuan Pottery.

René Lalique Signed Gold, Ivory and Enamel Art Nouveau Egyptian Stickpin circa 1900
Property from the Collection of Richard A. Canfield
Designed as an Egyptian King More »
René Lalique Signed Gold, Ivory and Enamel Art Nouveau Egyptian Stickpin circa 1900
Property from the Collection of Richard A. Canfield
Designed as an Egyptian King or Queen's head featuring a stylized headdress, decorated with brown champlevé enamel, around a high relief carved ivory face (100+ years old ivory), backed in 18 karat gold, signed LALIQUE on the reverse of the finial.
CONDITION REPORT
In good condition with gentle surface wear to the enamel and patination to the gold commensurate with age. Pin has some mild unevenness. Ivory has aging to the nose and chin of the figure, resulting in a butterscotch coloring. The pin is signed on the reverse of the finial. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Genevieve Hannon is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
CATALOGUE NOTE
Richard A. Canfield (1855-1914) was a prominent American businessman and art collector. Known as the "Prince of Gamblers," he was one of the earliest to develop the modern day resort casino and the solitaire game Canfield is named in his honor. After establishing a well-known gambling operation in Providence, RI, he moved to New York in the 1880’s opening Canfield's Clubhouse at 5 East 44th Street and the Saratoga Clubhouse in Saratoga Springs. His gambling resorts were frequented by members of wealthy families like the Whitneys, Vanderbilts and Morgans, as well as gambling legends Diamond Jim Brady and John Warne "Bet-a-Million" Gates. In 1907, when reformers succeeded in banning gambling, Canfield was forced to close his casinos. In his later years, Canfield owned a successful glass making business and continued to expand his art collection. He was a personal friend of James Abbott McNeill Whistler and possessed the second largest Whistler collection in the world prior to his death. The present stickpins were passed down to the current owner, Genevieve Hannon, via her great grandmother, Canfield's wife, Genevieve Wren Canfield.
PREVIOUS SALES
Genevieve Hannon sold Three Gold and Enamel Stickpins, René Lalique, at the Magnificent Jewels Auction at Sotheby's in New York, New York, on December 9, 2015, for a total of $87,500 including hammer price and buyer's premium.
The first stickpin designed as an openwork cartouche-shaped element featuring stylized lotus blossoms, decorated with mint green champlevé enamel contrasted with royal blue plique-à -jour enamel, signed Lalique; the second design featuring a female nude, arms raised with bat-like wings, decorated with olive green champlevé enamel, signed Lalique; the third designed as a shield-shaped element of stylized floral and thistle motif, decorated with teal and royal blue champlevé enamel, signed Lalique; all three circa 1900.

Edwardian Solid Brass/Bronze Wall Sconces with Art Glass Shades
What a nice turn-of-the-century pair of sconces these really are! Solid Brass/Bronze sconces with a high/low antique finish, but still revealing the quality of the metal. Very nice, and high-end.
Those original antique shades are simply works of art by themselves. The shades were formed into a mold for the pattern and amber color. Then the ruby-tipped edges were applied with a special transparent tinting process. They are in great condition and color for their age. The Amber and Ruby color combination is very attractive.
Measurements:
* Height: 9"
* Width: 4 ¾"
* Projection: 8" from the wall into the room.
These sconces have been completely re-wired in our UL shop, with new sockets to conform to UL guidelines. Each socket is capable of accepting a 100 watt bulb...but...due to the shade height...bulbs need to be chosen carefully. We used short LED bulbs, and we will include them in the purchase. These bulbs do fit the fixture so wonderfully, but there are other bulbs on the market which will all fit these sockets, if desired.
These sconces are ready to go, and will be supplied with all the necessary mounting hardware.
Complete, UL re-wired Pair of Solid Brass/Bronze Sconces: $715.00 supplied with our LED bulbs...plus careful shipping.
$25.00 for Ground Shipping within the contiguous 48 states.
