A color plate from an exquisite book called Les Programmes Illustres, by Ernest Maindron, published in 1897, by Librairie Nilsson-Per Lamm, Paris purchased at auction, and More »
A color plate from an exquisite book called Les Programmes Illustres, by Ernest Maindron, published in 1897, by Librairie Nilsson-Per Lamm, Paris purchased at auction, and filled with the most unbelievably detailed and remarkable works of art we have seen... granted we are biased and truly moved by works from this period, by truly, these are gems, in remarkable, mint condition, and more than 100 years old. The auction catalog reads: '' ''I often ask myself what they, the curious of the year 2000, will think of us, whom we are cut off from by a century of dreadful events; them, knowing that which we don''t yet know and that we nearly suspect, what will they say of our old frivolity with all that has passed? Won''t they pity us, like we today have pity for the aristocratic society whose ancient prints we refer to with carelessness and levity?'' Thus mused Pierre Veber in his prefacing comments for the Programmes Illustres, a hardcover compendium of some of the most beautiful menus, invitations, business cards and announcements of the Belle Epoque. Little could he have known how off the mark his thoughts were, as today we look back at the virtuosity these posterists displayed with the limited technology of the time.'' (Rennert) Each sheet is 9.25 x 12.5 inches, and the images on the sheet vary - this one, by Adolphe Willette, measures 6 x 8.5 inches and is for a dentist called Feindel who seemed to specialize in babies, ladies, beasts and wolves.... Of Willette it has been written ''Willette was born in Chalons-sur-Marne. He studied for four years at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Cabanel, training which gave him a unique position among the graphic humorists of France. Whether comedy or tragedy, dainty triviality or political satire, his work is instinct with the profound sincerity of the artist. He set Pierrot upon a lofty pedestal among the imaginary heroes of France, and established Mimi Pinson, frail, lovable, and essentially good-hearted, in the affections of the nation. Willette is at once the modern Watteau of the pencil, and the exponent of sentiments that move the more emotional section of the public. Always a poet, and usually gay, fresh, and delicate, in his presentation of idylls exquisitely dainty and characteristically Gallic, illustrating the more ''charming'' side of love, often pure and sometimes unnecessarily materialistic. Willette frequently reveals himself bitter and fierce, even ferocious, in his hatreds, being a violent though at the same time a generous partisan of political ideas, furiously compassionate with love and pity for the people whether they be ground down under the heel of political oppression, or are merely the victims ot unrequited love, suffering all the pangs of graceful anguish that are born of scornful treatment. There is charm even in his thrilling apotheosis of the guillotine, and in the introduction into his caricatures of the figure of Death itself.'' Paris in the 1890''s was a magnificently decadent place: full of life and a laissez-faire attitude which permitted excesses like never before - fine lines were drawn and crossed between what was acceptable (indeed desired) behavior and what was not. Jean Veber, a cartoonist with a clear and keen eye for high society (and politicians) here gives us his view of what one man might have seen as the ultimate night out - vying for the attention of not one but two demi-mondaines, both eager for his corpulent affection. Veber misses nothing - the cigar, the over-rouged cheeks, the hats, the cocked eyebrow... it''s all there... Measuring 20 x 16 inches and printed on finely laid stock - in overall mint condition (A) this lithograph is hand numbered 89/100 and titled Chez Durand. It is signed. It has never been framed or folded and is in A condition. Please note that all of our posters are vintage, non-reproduction works of art. Please see our other posters, prints and ephemera. Thank you! THIS IS A POSTER FROM THE MONTREAL OLYMPIC GAMES IN 1976 Additional photos available upon request. Other sites sell these posters for upwards of $300US each!! This is a vintage poster and a reproduction. A red Montreal Games Olympic symbol is in the top left of each poster. Text reads: Jeux de la XXIe Olympiade Montreal/Games of the XXI Olympiad Montreal 1976 This series of posters, commissioned by COJO, illustrated the twenty-one sports on the program of the Games of the XXI Olympiad. Each was intended to communicate the action and immediacy of its sport. The Graphics and Design Directorate, therefore, preferred photographic techniques to drawings, where the results might have been colored by the artist''s personal interpretation. In the search for authenticity and using well defined selection criteria, COJO representatives visited Olympic sites in Munich and selected twenty-one color transparencies from among some 200,000 photos. Each photo had to be suitable for enlargement and reproduction, show readily apparent motion not contrary to the rules or special techniques of the sports, and be as spectacular as possible. (Source document: Official Report 1976, Vol. 1, page 320) Poster size: 16-1/2'' x 23-1/2''. A classic poster, measuring approx. 16.5 x 22 inches, by the master Art Deco artist known as Andre Wilquin. In a book on Wilquin, written in French and published by the Agence Culturelle de Paris in 1991, it is said that the ''Andre Wilquin detested certain words: art and beauty had no place in conversations which were always pleasant, filled with anecdotes and with precise details. He didn''t like phonies. He was quick to suggest that his work came primarily from intuition: every poster came about spontaneously from the requirements of the client. But the truth is a little more layered: Wilquin was blessed with huge reserves of technical skills but also with an equal amount of tricks (he loved tricks!) which permitted him a quick and efficient turn around time for his clients and accounts. Andre Wilquin wouldn''t otherwise have been able to practise his art fro fifty years with his precise, detailed style, without having acquired a certain productivity...'' Of this particular poster the same publication writes: '' We see here that the designer was not against energetic graphic solutions. It couldnt be more simple: a large foreground of black, typography limited to the name of the product, hairstyle which is well place and which places a high value on the product wich is being advertised.'' Simple, effective and totally Wilquin. Piece is framed and will be shipped framed. Please note that all of our posters, prints, pochoirs and ephemera are original, non-reproduction, vintage works of art. Please check out our other items for sale and contact us with any questions, or requests for additional photos. Please excuse the glare in the photo - Thank You! Mathieu, Georges
23,5 x 39
Produced for Air France in 1968, this is one of a collection of 14 posters which highlights some of the airline's most popular destinations. They were purchased from a woman who purchased them in 1968 and were in the original AF tube . They have never been framed and are excellent to very good condition. I have recently had them professionally linen lined in order to protect their physical integrity as well as to preserve their colors and investment value. They will frame up beautifully and are magnificent. Each poster measures 23. 5 inches by 39 inches. We think these posters would look great in a travel agency, and international setting or a large conference center ... they are colorful, spectacular and rather magnificent. This one, featuring India uses imagery and colors of that country as a background for Matthieu's fabulous imagination... French painter, Georges Mathieu gained an international reputation in the 1950Õs as a leading Abstract Expressionist. His large paintings are created very rapidly and impulsively. Despite his unconventional technique, he considers himself a historical painter working with abstract subject matter. Matthieu was born into a family of bankers and first studied law and philosphy before deciding to turn to the visual arts. In 1947, when he exhibited at the Salon of New Realities, he exhibited a cloth made of texture spots springing directly from the tube in a technique attributed to Jackson Pollock. He later exhibited in the United States and Japan. Not content with being 'just a painter', Mattieu has invented a 'lifestyle' which for him is the raison d'etre of an artist: this belief is most evident wth is work as editor of a multi-disciplinary magazine devoted to the arts. Mattieu is still active in the arts world in France and around the world. Please note that all of our posters are vintage, non-reproduction works of art.
