Rare & Important American Shaker Tall Chest New Lebanon, New York, Circa: 1820 The free spirited Brown sisters are well known in Shaker scholarly circles, as they befriended More »
Rare & Important American Shaker Tall Chest New Lebanon, New York, Circa: 1820 The free spirited Brown sisters are well known in Shaker scholarly circles, as they befriended the remaining Shaker sisters at Mount Lebanon, New York in the 1940's, often taking weekend jaunts to visit and share picnics with them and usually returning home with Shaker artifacts. Upon their death, the majority of their collection was willed to Winterthur Museum, serving as a foundation for its museum collection of Shaker furniture. A number of pieces remained in the family, the most important of which is this rare Shaker free standing tall chest. It remains in a remarkable state of original preservation and is one of the earliest surviving examples of the Shaker tall chest form. The applied bracket base is indicative of an early date of construction and is a feature found and shared more commonly on the tall chests produced at Watervliet, New York Shaker community which is its sister community just across the Hudson River. There was constant communication and an exchange of Shaker craftsmanship between both Shaker villages. It has wonderful scale, classic form, well thought out proportions, graduated drawers, moulded edges inside and out, and lovely dovetailed construction. Golden nut brown mellow patina. Constructed primarily with pine with its original hardwood knobs and original oxblood stain which greatly enhance the importance of this rare form of American Shaker craftsmanship. A Superb Gem! Height 70 1/2 inches, Width: 39 1/2 inches, Depth: 19" Provenance: Margaret, Pauline and Helen Brown, Of Rye, New York Then To: Gwen Longbotham, Of Columbus, Ohio, grand niece; Then To: Thomas C. Another two superb examples of American Aesthetic Movement furniture from the same estate as the Herter Bros. chest that we sold earlier this year. Fresh to the market, More »
Another two superb examples of American Aesthetic Movement furniture from the same estate as the Herter Bros. chest that we sold earlier this year. Fresh to the market, these two unique chests, have features that we have never seen before. The low boy has two surmounted flanking cabinets with beveled glass front and outer side, mirrored back and open inner side. The top of each cabinet has an open work brass gallery. The top of the mirror frame is an unusual marquetry, which looks to me like stylized clouds and stars. Both chests are solid mahogany with satin wood interiors. Each chest has large, very ornate brass hardware in a Moorish Taste. The low boy has three long drawers and a secret, spring loaded drawer beneath the top. The high boy has three small short drawers above three long drawers and a right side "hat box". This piece embodies the principles of Charles Eastlake and other influential designers of the time with simple, incised, turned and low relief decoration. Both pieces retain their original finish, hardware and mirrors. The care with which set was constructed suggests that it is from a leading New York cabinet maker's shop. Original finish, minor repairs, lightly cleaned and waxed. Original locks marked G. Bayer pat. Feb 6, 1873. Over all fine original condition. Hi boy 70" tall (with casters) x 33 3/4" wide, 21 1/4" deep. Low boy 77" tall x 62" widest, base 50" wide x 21 1/2" deep. Price 14,000 for the set. « Less

Magnificent, American, Renaissance Revival/Aesthetic Movement, Birdseye maple and rosewood marble top chest in the manner of "Herter Brothers". This exceptional chest of drawers is signed on the back and under the marble by a Bridgeport Connecticut maker. Unfortunately I cannot read the name only the location. Every thing about this fine chest is of the highest quality and workmanship. Every detail is crisp and masterfully executed. The piece is crafted of highly figured Birdseye maple and rosewood, even the interior of the top drawer is detailed, sectioned Birdseye maple. All original, four drawers, Italian white marble and flat plate glass mirror. It has been cleaned and French polished. Excellent condition. 941/2†high x 53" wide x 24" deep. « Less

A superb example of Period American Empire furniture. All original, mirrored, marble topped chest of drawers. Beautifully matched, highly figured mahogany veneers throughout, More »
A superb example of Period American Empire furniture. All original, mirrored, marble topped chest of drawers. Beautifully matched, highly figured mahogany veneers throughout, compliment the tall gracefully formed mirror and arms. Both the mirror and the chest are set off perfectly by the original finely veined white marble top. The chest is comprised of three large long drawers under two smaller frieze drawers. The smaller drawers are banded by a delicate "egg and dart" style molding. The top, sides, and base all feature a curved ogee molding and the chest sits on four graceful bracket feet. The chest retains it's original flat plate mirror, which swings from it's original hardware and is of an exceptionally fine design. An added feature that I have never seen on an American chest of drawers, are the knobs, which are each inlaid with a bold star. This chest has never been stripped, we have repaired the small veneer losses and cleaned and French polished it back to it's original grandeur. There is one stable, hairline, shrinkage crack on each side of the chest. All the drawers work smoothly and we have a key for the top drawer locks. Over all fine original condition. 85" tall x 48" wide, 24" deep. « Less

Over-sized, Late Victorian "hat box" dresser in cherry. Strikingly handsome, featuring detail we have never seen before. This large fine chest of drawers has a hand carved scene of a stag, standing under a tree as it's centerpiece on it's back splash. The chest itself is six drawers high, with two short drawers and a hat box over four larger, graduated long drawers. Each drawer is decorated with a large, ornate carved flourish. The hat box door is a simple raised panel and there is a nicely carved detail on both the top and bottom of each flanking column. The hardware consists of four smaller matching pieces in pressed brass on the small drawers and eight larger similar pieces on the large drawers. All the hardware is late 19th century but I am not sure which were the original pieces. They go so well together I did not notice the difference until after I had purchased the chest. Original working locks and key. Very good refinished condition. 72" tall (with casters) x 43 1/2" wide, 20" deep. « Less

Extra fine American Rococo Rosewood mirrored chest. Unusually styled, with the ornate mirror frame set 5" forward on the white marble surface, something we have not seen before. Passed down in a prominent Baltimore family this extraordinary piece of furniture has all the qualities found in the best cabinet work of it's day. Highly figured Rosewood solids and veneers, exceptional hand carvings, beautiful form and proportions and minute attention to detail. The base is serpentine, with two large drawers, columned sides with carved capitals and bases on "pumpkin" carved feet. Each drawer has a finely carved detail on each side and original carved knobs.
