SEPO (SEVERO POZZATI, 1895-1983). ANIC CIGARETTES. 1938. 58x38 inches. Creations Idea, St. Ouen. Between 1930 and the outbreak of the Second World War, Sepo regularly worked with the French National Tobacco Company, designing posters to help promote their various brands (including Balto, Naja and Week-End). Anic was the company''s first foray into light, filtered cigarettes which were introduced to the market in 1937. Sepo designed two posters for Anic, and to help visually explain the new and unusual concept of a filter he depicts a mask smoking, implying a buffer between the smoker and the cigarette. Sepo / University di Parma p. 203. Pozzati was born in Comacchi in 1895 and specialized in product and marketing posters - much like Cappiello - although Sepo is known for adhering more strictly to Art Deco lines. In fact, SEPO (an acronym which uses the first two letters of both his first and last names) worked in Paris for years, and his early posters show clear references to Cappiello - flat colors, graphics, etc. But it was SEPO who began to be swayed by the new vanguard of graphics and art - clearly his posters show influences of Cubism, Cassandre and other trend-setting Parisian avant gardists. He helped to establish the forms characteristic of the Art Deco advertising and his prolific and long - he died at age 86 - life was marked by long periods of exhibitions of painting, posters and sculture. This classic poster, measuring approx. 38 x 58 inches, illustrates the style for which SEPO is best known - clean, precise and never using more detail than is necessary. Poster is in very good condition and is linen backed. Thank You! Please note as well that International shipping rates are for standard shipping - expedited shipping is available at ADDITIONAL cost which will be calculated at the time of purchase based on purchasers location. This is an original 1922 tipped in color mini poster, designed by a man described as an artist who ''may perhaps be said to be the most perfect and painstaking draughtsman who has ever devoted much serious attention to posters''. The tipped-in mini poster image for JOB Cigarette Papers is considered to be a classic, measures about 4'' x 6.25'' and is attached to a creamy medium weight sheet that is about 7.75'' x 10.25'' which includes the title of the piece as well as the designer and (generally) the date of original publication.( Please note that some of the cream sheets BUT NONE OF THE PRINTS display foxing and or small water damage. This will not affect the mini poster when it is framed.) This exceptional ''mini poster'' was removed from a 1922 retrospective collection of late 19th century and very early 20th century art advertising posters. The author of the publication described posters in this way:''Although the posters stands where all who run may read, and although we spontaneously admire, or thoughtlessly condemn it, few ever stop to formulate a reason for doing one or the other, or to establish a critical working standpoint in the matter... The poster design must have a clear simplicity of motive and a vigorous, sometimes bizarre conception in design and treatment. It is to be supposed that until a few years ago the artist or designer considered himself above is task when he was working on these ''advertisements'' and failed to produce a successful poster because he failed to realize that he was engaged either in a difficult problem, or in one worthy of his best efforts. It was left to the French to show the world how much of beauty and of inspiration could enter into the poster, and it was many years before the designing world at large learned its lesson (if, indeed it may yet be said to have learned) from the daring, sparkling sheets of flaming color that have decorated the streets of Paris.'' Please note that this ''mini poster'' is a small version of the original, larger poster. While the bulk of our poster collection consists of full size posters, we consider these smaller, more affordable gems to be worthy of collection as well. The color plates are striking and vibrant, and even the monotone plates are special - offering a clear view of what was considered to be in 1922 - and still! - some of the best poster design ever. These are not modern reprints- they were printed in 1922 and have withstood both the test and the passage of time. Please note that all of our pochoirs, prints and posters are vintage, non-reproduction, original pieces. Please e-mail with any questions or requests for additional information or photographs. This is an original 1922 tipped in mini poster, designed by the enormously talented Will H. Bradley in 1895. Of Bradley it has been written ''... as can be seen, Will Bradley was strongly inspired by the work of AUbrey Beardsley in England, and his black and white shows clever massing, and a pleasing grace of line governed by a much greater restrain in feeling than ever appeared in Beardsley''s drawings. One must not underestimate the value of the impetus to originality and art in this kind of work which Mr. Bradley''s numerous posters created at this very critical juncture. They showed many high points which place them high in the ranks of American posters. The letters was always adequate, in mass and relative scale (a point of superiority over Beardsley), the conceptions were quaint and original, and any abandon lacking in their composition was more than made up for by their strong decorative qualities, the cleverness of the whole carrying even the possible over-finesse of detail - their only fault as posters. The tipped in mini poster image is about 4'' x 6'' and is attached to a creamy medium weight sheet that is about 7.75'' x 10.25'' which includes the title of the piece as well as the designer and date of original publication.( Please note that some of the cream sheets BUT NONE OF THE PRINTS display foxing and or small water damage. A color plate from an exquisite book called Les Programmes Illustres, by Ernest Maindron, published in 1897, by Librairie Nilsson-Per Lamm, Paris purchased at auction, and More »
A color plate from an exquisite book called Les Programmes Illustres, by Ernest Maindron, published in 1897, by Librairie Nilsson-Per Lamm, Paris purchased at auction, and filled with the most unbelievably detailed and remarkable works of art we have seen... granted we are biased and truly moved by works from this period, by truly, these are gems, in remarkable, mint condition, and more than 100 years old. The auction catalog reads: '' ''I often ask myself what they, the curious of the year 2000, will think of us, whom we are cut off from by a century of dreadful events; them, knowing that which we don''t yet know and that we nearly suspect, what will they say of our old frivolity with all that has passed? Won''t they pity us, like we today have pity for the aristocratic society whose ancient prints we refer to with carelessness and levity?'' Thus mused Pierre Veber in his prefacing comments for the Programmes Illustres, a hardcover compendium of some of the most beautiful menus, invitations, business cards and announcements of the Belle Epoque. Little could he have known how off the mark his thoughts were, as today we look back at the virtuosity these posterists displayed with the limited technology of the time.'' (Rennert) Each sheet is 9.25 x 12.5 inches, and the images on the sheet vary - this one, by Roubille , measures 4 x 9.25 and was evidently a suggested programme for a theater event.
