Antique original print (from 1794) from John Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery, a rare and highly prized print of a scene from one of William Shakespeare's plays. This was published in 1852 (the original book was published in 1805 with the printed created in 1794). Please read the fascinating history of these prints below. This particular print is from The Taming of the Shrew, Scene II by R. SmirkeCondition: picture clear, border foxedBorn in 1719, the English land surveyor turned engraver John Boydell began his artistic career publishing his own prints. Eventually he began to publish the works of others, and by 1767 he devoted himself entirely to publishing and selling engravings of other artists. At the time, most of the prints for sale in England were imported from France and other Continental countries. And French publishers, being French, would rarely extend credit or exchange prints with the English dealers, demanding instead to be paid in cash up front. Boydell seized this opportunity and began commissioning English engravers to create plates of English paintings. The resulting works were the first English prints ever to be in demand in Europe. « Less

Unframed. Measures 13 3/8 by 10 inches. A fine, rich impression, on Rives off-white wove paper, with full margins (2 7/8 to 5 1/8 inches), in excellent condition. Provenance: Acquired from the Artist McNay Art Museum, San Antonio Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) American painter, print maker, illustrator, writer and sailor. He first studied architecture but turned to painting, studying in New York at the schools of William Merritt Chase and of Robert Henri. In his realistic landscapes, the most famous of which related to his long sojourns in such remote and rugged places as Alaska, Tierra del Fuego and Greenland (e.g. Eskimo in a Kayak, 1933; Moscow, Pushkin Mus. F.A.), he favoured a precise rendering of forms with strong contrasts of light and dark. He was also renowned for the many books that he illustrated and wrote about his adventures. His considerable reputation as an illustrator was based on his striking drawings for such classics as Voltaire's Candide (New York, 1928) and Herman Melville's Moby Dick (Chicago, 1930). His simple but distinctive graphic designs, were widely imitated.Size Overall Dimensions10.0" H X 13.4" W25.4cm H X 34.0cm W « Less
