circa: 1940 width: 32 height: 42 length: 18 This charming antique oak secretary desk was English-made around 1940 and recently imported to Atlanta, Georgia. The style is reminiscent of a traditional English design originating in the Jacobean period, which is most characteristic in the paneled cabinet doors, shaped apron and bobbin-turned legs. The solid, quartersawn oak remains quite beautiful, with a rich complexion and a pronounced grain that have grown more beautiful over the years with the development of a lovely patina. The solid brass hardware also contrasts wonderfully with the oak, making this quite a stunning secretary. The single drawer features dovetailed joints, while the secretary fall, drawer and cabinet doors all lock with an accompanying key. The doors and interior of the fall have developed separations in the wood, which are natural developments common to solid wood furniture, while one of the back feet has recently seen repairs to old damage. The top contains four filled-in nail holes, so at one point in time this secretary had a bookcase sitting on top of it. The fall also operates a little stiffly and doesn''t fully shut on one corner but otherwise, this secretary remains quite sturdy and thus overall condition is very good. « Less

circa: 1910 width: 54 height: 32 length: 25 This unique kidney desk was crafted in England around 1910, during the Edwardian period. Today, the desk remains as beautiful as ever, with a lovely patina and a rich satinwood complexion. The grain also looks quite striking, especially because of the use of quarter veneering. The black leather, which is hand-worked with gold tooling, contrasts beautifully with the satinwood, as does the solid brass hardware. As is standard in fine furniture, each drawer features hand-cut dovetails, while the elegantly square tapered legs end in spade feet. One of the legs has a repaired break--which was performed excellently, so the desk is sturdy--and the leather has sustained a few minor scratches, but otherwise this desk remains in very good overall condition. « Less

circa: 1880 width: 45 height: 31 length: 26 Handmade in Victorian England around 1880, this gorgeous antique desk represents the finest in English furniture craftsmanship. The oak, for instance, is not only adorned by an array of intricate carvings, but also shows a rich complexion and a distinct grain, made more beautiful over the years by the development of a lovely patina. The solid brass hardware also contrasts beautifully with the darker oak. Of course, this desk is also as sturdy as it is elegant, and remains as strong today as it ever was. This is in part due to the quality of craftsmanship and in part due to the fine solid oak that was used in its construction. Each drawer features hand-cut dovetails, which is yet another indicator of high quality, while all the drawers operate with amazing smoothness. Understandably, this desk has sustained a variety of wear marks, which you can see in the accompanying pictures. Otherwise, this desk remains in excellent condition for its age. « Less

circa: 2000 width: 43 height: 94 length: 25 This stunning secretary bookcase was recently handmade from Georgian Period wood from about 1820. The burl walnut, having developed a lovely patina over the years, now displays an incredibly rich complexion and a striking grain, both of which look fantastic in contrast to the elegant solid-brass hardware that adorns the drawer fronts. The distinctive arched top is also quite beautiful, while walnut crossbanding and satinwood string inlay accent the fall and drawer fronts. The locking desk section, too, looks quite splendid, with several drawers and compartments and a broad writing surface. The locking bookcase contains fully adjustable shelves, while it separates from the base for shipping and easy movement. Structurally, this secretary bookcase is utterly sound. The shaped bracket feet are as sturdy as they are elegant, while the solid-oak drawers still operate smoothly. The drawers all feature hand-cut dovetails and all but the lowest lock. There are, however, a few notable scratches on the drawer fronts in addition to minor stress marks on the feet as well as a few veneer chips on one of the sides. Also, there are several small separations in the moulding that have been repaired and filled in. Otherwise, this secretary remains in excellent condition. « Less

circa: 1910 width: 38 height: 78 length: 17 This beautiful English mahogany antique secretary was hand-crafted in Edwardian England around 1910 and recently imported to our antique furniture store here in Atlanta, GA, USA. Over the years, the mahogany has developed a rich patina, which enhances its deep, mellowed lustre. Satinwood string inlays provide subtle accents, while elegant solid-brass hardware contrast beautifully with the mahogany. The stained-glass doors are sturdy and operate smoothly, as do the drawers and fall. Each secretary drawer features hand-cut dovetailed joints, as was common in quality antique furniture, which signify sturdy construction and fine craftsmanship, and the lower two feature strong supports through their middles, ensuring long life and strong functionality. The back of this antique secretary features tongue-in-groove paneling, which is an older, seldom-used technique that indicates this bookcase was bench-made with care. The leaded glass doors make a rattle sound when opened, but all of the glass is in securely. The top and bottom sections of the secretary separate easily for shipping and movement, and can be secured with two accompanying screws. Like much antique English furniture, this antique secretary offers an elegant combination of utility and beauty that would make a fine addition to any home! « Less
